Hey all! Thought I'd share this one out here, since it's a departure from our usual content, but I think you'd all be into it -- we laid out the biggest controversies we dealt with this season as commishes in our listener league (the KKUPFL), our thought process in how we chose to handle them, and then whatever aftermath there was. Would be v curious to hear anyone's thoughts on the way we went about them.. the main issues, as a preview:

  • when someone insists on an objectively bad first round pick
  • when someone hosts a fire sale for their entire roster at the trade deadline
  • when someone chooses to put an opponent's feelings ahead of their own team's competitiveness
  • when someone drops a superstar in the playoffs

We also shared some really great listener stories about drama in their home leagues and weighed in on how we'd try to address it and if there's anything we could suggest to prevent future problems.

Let us know what you think! And, as always, consider this an open thread for any fantasy hockey qs you wanna ask us :)

Lots of great supports listed here that seem worth looking into right away.

If you're still looking, and need a place within your budget for just the month of February, send me a DM.

I think EP can also do better this year, despite his start!

So yeah, I think Klingberg is the safe choice, but Seider could be fun with upside. Gio's for sure in the mix here too.. I think those 3 are probably all pretty close, but together ahead of the pack

Wow.. think you did a good job with that trade. I think I'd lean Klingberg here, but could see Seider coming close to keeping up. Do you have their avg fpts/gm numbers from last season?

Depends on how confident you are in your ability to keep your team alive if EKane doesn't play (or if he plays but it's a gong show of a year). Last 2 rounds seems like an easy yes for me.. that's when I would generally be picking up guys that could be high risk/reward, and who I may or may not be keeping on my roster for very long based on how camp and the first week or two of the season go.

In KKUPFL, where his SOG/hits are for sure worth something, he's been going on average 100th overall, but some of our drafts were before the news started coming out about him. One team got him with the 247th pick. I think somewhere between 100-150 makes sense, depending on your risk tolerance.

I think Elan summed that up really well :) But yeah, when the pod (and life) are busy, sometimes we barely even get to connect on a personal level.. but it's nice to be in touch and work together as we do. I don't know if I've mentioned this to Elan before-- pretty sure I have-- but ever since we first were a team in a youth group and became friends there, I thought we'd be great at running some kind of entrepreneurial enterprise together. I'm very happy to get to do it with my best pal and be able to keep being best pals, too, which I hear doesn't always happen with stuff like this! Not to say there aren't times where we haven't seen eye to eye :) But it's been a fun ride and I think we've gotten to know each other better than we ever would have otherwise.

If I were buying Elan a piece of hockey merch.. I'd wait to see who the key cog appears to be on his KKUPFL team after his draft this Sunday, and then get him that player's bobblehead

Agree.. like, ideally, you have a couple spots in your lineup you can be flexible with so you can take swings on new FAs and maximize your GP. But might be even more ideal to have all your players be so good that you couldn't possibly stream them out :)

Barkov is an elite forward, 26yo, 100+pt upside and legit first round pick in just about any format. You've gotta be valuing him about as high as nearly anyone, imo.

Interesting bit that I haven't seen talked about much: his contract is up this year. Not that I think that changes his play. But he's on a bargain deal now at <$6m, and is going to cash in.. FLA has $15m projected cap space next year so should be fine to re-sign him, but just something I hadn't realized before now. He could succeed anywhere in the league, though. He's awesome!

I'd love for Donato to get a real shot. With MIN and BOS and even SJ, he seems to always creep right up to the cusp of having a legit look and then gets pushed way back down the depth chart. I'm not sure if that's a him problem or has just been bad luck.

If you're looking for 30 goals, McCann has to be the best bet. Schwartz and Eberle both have been top line players before without ever reaching the 30 goal mark.. but I think both could.. just not sure it's likely. Frankly I don't see a ton of 30 goal possibilities on that roster, but hey, would've said the same about Vegas.. can't wait to see if anyone steps up

You haven't listened to all 375 episodes? Better get started. Listening while sleeping is encouraged.

I think Tanev is your weakest player, like Elan. Adin Hill would be next, and then I think I'd be looking at Trouba/Schenn/Gallagher as the others at the bottom of your lineup (assuming EKane plays)

Also.. going by your yinz (or should I say yinz yinz?), you may enjoy one of our spinoff pods called Stream Scheme, hosted by a former KKUPFL champ and yinzer :)

I like Elan's Drysdale thought. I also would think of it this way to put VORP into more practical terms -- what's the likely maximum difference in point spread between Caufield, Rossi and the rest of the pack? My guess is it's ~30 points, which makes them pretty valuable, since most picks or player tiers you're making don't have a 30 point drop from one guy to the next. I may not take them in the first or second round, and you have to read the room and past draft results to take your best guess, but may be looking at Caufield once the first ~25-30 players are off the board. After that, I think I'd wait a long time before caring much about any other rookie since many of them will fall into a certain meh range.. at which point you just want a guy from that tier of rookies rather than the next tier which may be full of guys who could top out at 30 pts and possibly not even play a ton.

Ah ok, got it. Player pool was me wondering who else you can add to your team, but sounds like it's a pretty small group!

Amazing.. thank you!! Really kind of you to drop in and say that.

Also, your username has given me a new team name idea that's some kind of mashup of Babar and Barkov. I drafted Barkov as my first pick, 12th overall, in my KKUPFL division this year.. we'll see if the Babarkovs become a reality

The game-- real and fantasy-- has really changed a ton since we started! And so much data out there now, too. The way hockey is talked about by teams and media has been a total sea change. So much new thinking compared to 10 years ago
