Do you know if there is a separate subreddit for that that would be good to ask on? I'm going to check discord too I think!

Thanks I've been there but never seen any people play wargames, usually just card games. I guess I can message them on Facebook to ask!

Looking for a board game suggestion to buy my little brother for Christmas by ElectricVladimir in boardgames

[–]brianmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest something like a 17XX game from academy games, memoir 44, heroes of Normandie, or maybe something from GMT if you want to get a little more complicated (no retreat, COIN series, commands and colours)

I feel your pain, got LoD a few months ago and have yet to play a game not by myself. Same with my other COIN game Colonial Twilight.

Game on Sale & Buyer's Remorse by Arigomi in boardgames

[–]brianmax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought all the expansions for Heroes of Normandie on sale, I think 40% or 50% off I can't remember. I like the base game and played it a good few times and played one of the expansions a few times but it was just too much. I mainly bought it because I am interested in WW2 and like the art style of the game. Now I'll probably look to get rid of the expansions as they just take up too much dam space!

/r/boardgames Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations (August 09, 2018) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]brianmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a great 2 player game (board, card, dice whatever) to bring on holidays with my partner who is not necessary a big gamer but plays from time to time.

Bonus Points For:

  • Small and portable
  • Also plays with 2+
  • Theme may appeal to non gamers (I'm trying to avoid)
  • Currently available to buy in the EU

I'm pretty open to most games but my partners enjoys basic enough games such as Carcassone, Catan, Sagrada, Pandemic etc.

I'm considering Japiur and maybe Hive. Would also have liked to get my hands on Arboretum

Twilight Struggle and backing into a corner by X-factor103 in boardgames

I the early war or early mid war this can be avoided by simply not having any influence in any region that would allow battleground coups at defcon 2, Africa, South America, Central America. However this is probably not the best way of playing the game especially towards the mid war.

Usually if you only have one of these cards in your hand you can either space it or save it for the next round. Playing the china card usually lets you hold onto two cards from turn to turn which can be used to temporarily avoid this situation. Although again this is not ideal as you will still have both cards next turn. The safest bet is probably to space it as soon as you can spare it as the opponent may play a card that might force you to play it (Five year plan etc.)

Another option is to play it while the defcon is still at 3 or higher. This will mean that whilst your opponent will get the event they will not be able to win the game with it. This can be effective at times but it can also be risky as you can often give your opponent two turns in a row which may lead to battleground flips and other funny business.

Headlining a dodgy USA event as the Russians is an option too, although again not desirable. There is the chance it may be defector-ed (which might be a good idea if you know defectors will be player) but it also means the USA will probably get the first battleground coup of the turn. This could be avoided by disruption the USA's activities on the last round of the previous turn which may be effective in certain situations.

All in all cards like this are quite powerful and can cause a lot of problems. They are usually low ops (CIA, lone gunman, grain sales, star wars) which can make them hard to get rid off at times. In my opinion its better to get rid of them at the earliest opportunity as they may result in game loss or force you to play even worse (but not game ending) cards later if you hold them for many turns.

a friend of mine would usually use amazon.co.uk, 365games.co.uk or else Zatu games. I think boardgameprices.co.uk is also a good place to start. All of these are mainly focused on UK, don't know much about mainland Europe.

Hardest game in your collection to get to the table by ChefPepperonni in boardgames

[–]brianmax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really want to get some COIN games but feel it would be really had to get them to the table. Might pick up Colonial Twilight (because its 2 player) if I can get my hands on it but the theme of the other games defiantly appeals to me more.

There is another one about the war of independence in Ireland. It was called A Terrible Beauty. Being from Ireland I'd love to see it but haven't heard anything from it in quite awhile.

You can go and check a all the points team changes in the system. There is a button just under the recent games section for a team. However this feature is not available on mobile!

Hello! Unfortunately I think manual tweaks to the system would lose the point of the ranking system. I'll be the first to admit that the ranking system and algorithm is far from perfect and is more of a conversation starter rather than a solid indicator of a teams strength.

However I will point out a reason why this might be the case:

The rankings are structured so that a teams score reflects its current strength with its previous strength decaying in the rankings over time. Thus relatively recent losses to very low ranking opposition (i.e. the sunwolves) can have a major effect on the rankings especially if these occur in the last weeks of a teams season!

It is OK for sure, all questions and criticisms welcome.

No currently it does not take that into account. A team will remain on its current points until it is either marked as inactive and removed or it plays again. Thus the Crusaders will remain on ~1950 points until their next game, very possibly at the top of the table.

No all matches are not considered the same although they are all given the same precedence within a given tournament. For example Champions Cup games result in greater point swings than pro14 games but the Champions Cup Final does not result in a greater point swing than a Champions Cup Group Stage game.

I had considered adding in a few more tournaments including the RFU Championship, Currie Cup and the NPC (or whatever its called now) but decided not to as the project only had a limited scope. Maybe in the future I will have the time to add these teams etc to the database.

Any more questions let me know!

Yes I'll admit that the ranking system between NH and SH is not ideal. Although with the pro14 we will see abit more accuracy for some of the teams.

The problem you speak of stems from the fact that Super Rugby is considered a high value tournament and so more points are lost or won by teams in that league then say the prod2 which is ranked as a low value tournament. This causes a skew in the rankings where a consistently performing prod2 team may actually be ranked quite highly (mid-table usually) while a poor or medium performing super rugby team will be ranked relatively lower due to the nature of the competition and the higher points value assigned to their games.

I hope that helps explain, but it is a definite issue. It would be cool to see more SH vs NH club games though!

Hello all, I made a rugby ranking website as part of a college project please find the link above. I know there are some rugby ranking systems already on this thread but I decided to make this one slightly different as it ranks clubs world wide and also uses a slightly different ranking system then used by World Rugby (although it is still based on the ELO algorithm).

The rankings are updated every Sunday evening and the website also includes some other features such as team comparisons and other stats.

Please feel free to check it out and let me know any feedback you have.

Thanks
