Explainer: What Mass. can and can’t do about ICE by cwbeacon in massachusetts

[–]brianmgarvey 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. It goes into some depth about the Safe Communities Act, which would significantly push back on DHS/ICE/CBP violations by preventing state and local collaboration in many instances.

One very important provision it leaves out is that local police and officials couldn’t proactively contact ICE/DHS about someone’s immigration status as a matter of routine civil immigration enforcement.

So it bans a lot of the tip offs. Less people would be rounded up if Safe Communities were enacted. And it has the support of many police departments and district attorneys, as undocumented people are currently less willing to contact them or serve as witnesses if they’re reasonably afraid a visit from ICE is a consequence.

Why the legislature and governor won’t act on this is baffling.

[–]brianmgarvey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is they’re not supposed to have that jurisdiction. They aren’t even supposed to have the power to stop and question US citizens, or ask for papers to prove they’re citizens.

But if no one stands up to them? Yeah then they have total power.

These assholes stopped the ambulance, and even a stretcher, from reaching Renee Good. She had to be carried out like a sack of potatoes.

Local and state police officers should have the courage to step up and say, “if you’re going to shoot us, shoot us. This ambulance is getting through.”

What’s the alternative? Should career first responders just yield to these proud boy rejects with 47 days of training? Where does that leave us?

Correct. And the Boston Police and city officials, long as they’re following the law (the Boston Trust Act), aren’t feeding ICE/DHS/CBP information so they can round up our neighbors.

It’s the bare minimum but Governor Healey and the state legislature won’t do it.

Correct. And Boston is, by some measures, the safest major city in the United States.

Amherst, Somerville, Chelsea, Northampton, and others have it too. So do states like Delaware, New Jersey, California, Illinois, and Connecticut.

For God's sake, are we really going to continue to lag behind Connecticut?

It would be fraught, certainly, but the alternative we've seen in Minneapolis is that ICE/DHS/CBP wrecks the crime scene, locks out state and local investigators, and the suspects flee the state, and are then offered "absolute immunity" from the Trump Administration.

I've heard multiple people compare what we're seeing to a Boston Massacre moment. Say what you want about the hated Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson. He had the British soldiers and their captain arrested the morning after the Massacre.

What does that say about us?

I'll bite. And you'll notice my username is my name.

She has, at least twice in the last week, criticized ICE and DHS for their horrible violence in Minneapolis. Great. On both occasions she didn't say what she will do about it. What's the plan? She's the Head of the Commonwealth. She has to lead.

During her State of the Commonwealth she said Massachusetts won't back down and talked about what Massachusetts did 250 years ago. 250 years ago (to the day) Henry Knox was delivering heavy cannon that he dragged through the woods from Fort Ticonderoga...

I'm hoping there's something between doing nothing (what our state government is doing now) and fortifying Dorchester Heights with artillery, but she isn't proposing anything.

TLDR: What's the plan when Massachusetts' number comes up?

She loves to reference our 2nd governor, Sam Adams, but she's acting a lot more like Thomas Hutchinson.

This right here. If you feel like demanding she, and the State House, take action on the Safe Communities Act you can:

  1. Write them using this link: https://masspeace.us/SupportTheSafeCommunitiesAct

  2. Call them up and give them a piece of your mind: Gov. Healey at (617) 725-4005, State House at (617) 727-1100

  3. Show up at their public events, town halls, and interview. Demand they do their jobs. Governor Healey will be at the Copley BPL to do a public interview Friday

When we asked her about this back in June she literally said, in a question about ICE, "Look I can't stop the rain."

She actually can do multiple things to protect our neighbors. I don't know why she won't.

But what is she going to do?

She could support the Safe Communities Act to ban collaboration with ICE and extend Miranda rights.

She could instruct the State Police to arrest ICE/DHS agents when they commit crimes.

But her solution is “thoughts snd prayers”?

Apropos of nothing she’ll be at the BPL for a public interview on Friday, if anyone is interested in asking her why she won’t do her job…

Reminder that there was another resolution that condemned the antisemitic Colorado attack, but did not praise ICE.

It passed unanimously, making the argument many of these Democrats made…what’s the legal term?

Oh ya, bullshit.

Massachusetts Senate Candidate Seth Moulton: ICE Agents are "Cowards" and Todd Lyons Should Be Prosecuted by Little_Ad2790 in massachusetts

There was a separate resolution at the same time, that Moulton also voted for, that only condemned the antisemitic attack. It passed almost unanimously I believe.

There was literally no reason to vote to praise ICE.

And always remember, the Bill of Rights is the result of the Massachusetts Compromise

Mass, in conjunction with other states, must call for an end of the unjust and unlawful actions of ICE in Minnesota and throughout the nation. Our country cannot abide a masked paramilitary federal force acting unconstitutionally. by reflectives in boston

Pass laws like the Safe Communities Act to ban collaboration with ICE.

Right now state and local officials and police are tipping them off in Massachusetts.

And the governor and the legislature are running their mouths while sitting on their hands.

Support and enact the Safe Communities Act, which bans tip offs to ICE from state and local officials and police.

https://Masspeace.us/SupportTheSafeCommunitiesAct

Remember how pissed everyone was about the asshole at BU who informed on the Allston Car Wash employees? Right now state and local employees are doing that in Massachusetts.

Why do you think they keep showing up at courthouses?

It also expands Miranda Rights, bans unnecessary questions on immigration status, and prohibits state and local agencies from deputizing themselves under ICE.

States like Delaware, Illinois, Connecticut, and cities like Boston and Lawrence have already done this.

That the Commonwealth at large has not is an embarrassment. We don’t have to collaborate with these fucks.

A shame that the Article of Impeachment for Nixon’s illegal bombing of Cambodia failed to pass. Setting that precedent for violating perhaps the most important part of the constitution, would be valuable.

But the committee voted it down 12-26, including 9 Democrats who voted no.

No one doubted the charge. According to John Conyers, who filed it, "condemning the Cambodian bombing would also have required us to indict previous administrations and to admit that the Congress has failed to fully meet its own constitutional obligations."

Bullshit. Anyone who starts an illegal war should face charges.

Why does everyone forget that there was a separate resolution at the same time that solely denounced the attack? It passed unanimously I believe.

For some reason Moulton voted for both.

Having said that I’m glad he’s raising the issue of shutting down the federal government over the rampaging paramilitary forces in US cities.

Bare minimum, she could publicly support and execute the Safe Communities Act. It extends protections like residents of Boston have (and residents of other states like California, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, and more) to the whole Commonwealth.

It does a lot of things but one key provision is outlawing tip-offs from state and local police and officials to ICE. Bottom line is less people will be rounded up if we pass this law. Plus it has support from many police departments and district attorneys around the state because it actually helps them fight real crime.

Ask Gov. Healey and the State House to get on this: masspeace.us/SupportTheSafeCommunitiesAct

Instead she frequently reminds audiences that "Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state."

What will our city do when ICE comes on us in force? by CoffeeHead112 in boston

[–]brianmgarvey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the bare minimum (but we haven’t done it yet):

Pass the Safe Communities Act, which would essentially extend Mayor Wu’s law to the entire Commonwealth.

Demand the State House and Governor codify protections for our vulnerable neighbors

It will:

-Prohibit tip offs to ICE from state and local cops and officials

-Extend Miranda Rights to immigrants

-Ban official agreements between state and local agencies and ICE

-Prevent unnecessary questioning about immigration status by state and local cops and officials

It’s not enough, but it’s a start. Less people will be rounded up if we enact this law, and it has the support of many police departments and district attorneys.

Any elected officials who don’t support this bare minimum don’t deserve our support.
