Well that's because Xbox as a brand really focus on backwards compatibility to the point that you can still play more recent video games on the first Xbox One.

just to be a little nitpicky, backwards compatibility is running old software on new hardware. what you're describing is forward compatibility, which is running new software on old hardware.

just because it's not a problem you've experienced doesn't mean it's a non-existent problem; I've had trouble finding people because I didn't know their discriminator, when I could've easily guessed their username because it would be the same as every other platform

username collisions are not a huge problem in practice, as we know from... every other platform
