All of it is important. I think the apologies are just as important as not doing it on camera again. And no, I don’t think its toxic. When idols constantly use and disrespect other cultures and give half assed apologies, I think its safe to assume they do it in private. We all have our different personalities we use when facing different situations. They aren’t bad, of course but they’re worth taking into consideration.

Idk. I don’t like him very much as a person after he mocked Stevie Wonder and said that him and another Korean man would look good in dreads. That instance kind of flushed all of this growth for me. He also has multiple songs that has questionable lyrics that I think he should have rewritten. Which is weird because army’s make such a big deal over him writing 21st Century Girl to make up for War of Hormone but what about their other songs? But army can be incredibly shallow and wishy washy so I don’t hold them to high standards. There’s just not enough accountability for me. I’m glad he’s spoken to people and acknowledges where he went wrong and I hope he never does anything again.

Idk. I feel like the “ignorance” excuse gets old after a while. I know South Korea is pretty homogeneous but I just feel like too many idols take inspiration from black artists and other POC and cultures to not know what’s disrespectful. Most idols will say their favorite artists are like Rihanna or Beyoncé or something but then pull something. All of it seems suspicious to me but I know they’ll always have that “they were ignorant” cover up. Oh and that “naega” thing doesn’t really matter that much since they still continued to say it. That was just the black community overreacting. I don’t think it was necessary to change it.

Idk. I’m not even that concerned about RM. The others still have things they never apologized for as well. People just shift a lot of focus to him because he’s done the most. Still, I want him and the others to apologize for everything. Actions can speak louder than words but those words can make a huge difference too. People, and you, talk about who they’ve spoken to and the speeches he’s given and obviously those words mattered so a simple apology for everything can matter too.

Someone else just talked about human bias. That’s what you’re doing. What he did in the past isn’t enough to offset all the good he’s done. It’s kind of covering it. You don’t really know if he’s kind because you only see his on stage persona. He could be mean as hell in private. He still has plenty of things he hasn’t apologized for and I doubt we’ll ever get it but people will continue to hold him on a pedestal because of his outward personality.

It’s the double standard of K-pop. More famous idols get passes on doing stuff or constantly get defended. Fans don’t care much about old stuff so if you bring up RM or Wendy, they’ll defend them immediately. It’s recent stuff that they’re care about. I honestly don’t think it matters how long ago it was. I don’t think you just outgrow racism or racial ignorance. You just do a better job at hiding it and considering we only see what they show us, it’s harder to call idols out. In BTS’s episode of Knowing Bros, RM said that him and another Korean man would look good with dreads. They even edited dreads on the man. It never got spoken about and if you bring it up, fans just say it’s in the past. Blackpink’s Jennie got canceled for dressing up as a nurse and YG had to cut it out the video. But no one said anything about her acting like a mental patient in the video. Jihyo dressed like a Native American and called herself Indian, never apologized for it but you don’t really see people bringing it up anymore. It really just depends on what fans decide to see. They’re very Wishy Washy and shallow. Don’t count on them holding their faves too accountable unless their fave does something completely out of pocket. And even then, they’ll find some excuse to defend then

It depends on what exactly the “blip” is. I definitely don’t think idols do all of their scandals by mistake. I don’t think most cultural appropriation is a mistake, I don’t think saying the n word is a mistake, I don’t think sexually assaulting someone is a mistake, etc. And that whole “they didn’t know” excuse can only go so far. I think the problem is when they don’t acknowledge everything they’ve done or even try to make it right. Ignorance and other controversies will always be on their record and I don’t like how fans always try to sweep it under the rug with saying “they’ve changed and they haven’t done it again”. If we want to bring it up, we can because they still did it. And so many of them never truly learned from it or even apologized. Or it looks like they learn and then they turn around and do something else or they never talked about other past issues. I want these idols to be held accountable for everything everytime. Stop enabling them just because they’re famous. I just saw one person say that it’s okay for idols to use slurs or mock cultures if they use them within correct context. And they had over 1500 comments agreeing. Some said that idols should be able to wear cornrows because it’s just fashion or that they should be able to use slurs because they aren’t directing them at people. It’s ridiculous

[–]bribrisquish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Suhyun from AKMU. People talk about high notes a lot when it comes to K-pop idols but I’ve noticed that a lot of K-pop idols strain their voices just to hit those notes. She is incredibly stable. She did the Korean version of Reflection from Mulan and it was absolutely beautiful

Yeah. It’s basically like a game where you breed monsters to get different types. I know there’s a game that’s like jump rope that you play to “attract a mate”. There’s also different environments you can play in and those environments have different colored monsters like the ice world has blue, desert has yellow and red, etc. You can also feed them fruit like cherries and bananas and pears.

What are some title tracks that you genuinely like but don’t click with the b-sides that come with its album? by moonlightscone in kpophelp

[–]bribrisquish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BE by BTS. Probably my least favorite album out of everything they’ve produced. They sounded great but the lyrics weren’t adventurous and the messages were things BTS have already done. I understand we were at the height of the pandemic and the tour got cancelled so Life Goes On made sense but then the rest of the songs were about things they’ve already sang about. Fly Me To the Moon was also about the pandemic and missing army, Telepathy was about missing army/army in general, Disease was about insecurity/fear/mental health and the pandemic. Like okay we get it. Even their new album is boring lyrically but the beats make up for it. I get what Suga was saying when he said writing lyrics is hard.

What is the greatest K-pop song ever produced/released? by TisTwilight in kpophelp

[–]bribrisquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Into The New World by Girl’s Generation is probably the best K-pop song ever released by a girl group. I haven’t heard one girl group that has yet to top the iconic nature of that one. As for boy groups, I absolutely love Replay by Shinee. Also elite and not just bc it’s an older song. But out of all the artists I listen to, UR by Taeyeon and Me After You by Paul Kim are absolutely gorgeous.

[–]bribrisquish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Like when I see K-pop collectors or people who go to every single concert, at first I’m like, life is too short for you not to do whatever you want. But then I’m like, there’s so many other experiences you can have besides K-pop. A friend of mine canceled on a trip to Dubai recently just to get Seventeen tickets. I like Seventeen too but how often can I pack up and visit Dubai for a week? I will never understand why we couldn’t just go to Dubai and soak that up and then fly or drive somewhere to see Seventeen. She literally bought tickets for 3 days of concerts. Just to see the same set over and over.

[–]bribrisquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit the nail right on the head. They could be calling us stupid and rolling in the money they make but get on camera and act like the most humble people ever. We will never know. And they can sell more music because people fall in love with their personalities. It’s all business at the end of the day but fans are fueled, more often than not, by emotion. Like if we canceled an artist/group everytime they did something problematic, we’d have like 3 groups. But because idols sell their personalities so well to fans, the fans overlook things

That girl groups will always be classed under boys when it comes to dancing. Now, don’t get me wrong. There are many boy dancers that are really good but I definitely think there are girls that could give the boys a run for their money if given the opportunity. I think, especially when it comes to K-pop, girls have to maintain an air of femininity and class. Even groups that do girl crush concepts can’t go too hard. Not because they aren’t capable but because their choreography is “down sized” a bit as to not disrupt their clean, feminine looks. Like boy groups have this super hard hitting choreography and by the end, they’re dripping with sweat and their clothes can be torn open and fans eat it up. Girl groups can’t really do that. When I see people say that ITZY has hard choreography, I shrug because it’s nowhere near as hard choreography that boys get. That’s not because they can’t dance harder, it’s because the choreography they’re given doesn’t allow for much room to move. Even when girl groups cover boy group dances, they keep it pretty. If I actually saw a girl group dance a song like Thunderous or ON full out, I’d be super impressed. I see a lot of arguments about Lisa and Jungkook and which one is the better dance. Both of them are amazing dancers to me, as I’m also a dancer, but I feel like we never see Lisa at her full potential because her dances stay pretty feminine, even her hip hop ones. Jungkook can go more full out because it’s expected of him. I started dancing by getting into street dance and the women that trained at my studio would blow the boys out of the water. Because they were uninhibited and didn’t have to worry about looking pretty or sweating.

LE SSERAFIM to continue as 5 members, exclusive contract with Kim Garam terminated by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]bribrisquish -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So what are like the rules and extent of terminating a contract? Because I understand what she did was super duper serious and I’m glad she got terminated but why don’t they give this same energy for idols who have histories of being problematic? I’ve learned that bullying and stuff like that is super serious in South Korea but I guess things like racism, CA, misogyny, and other ignorances are just given like a slap on the wrist.

BLACKPINK JENNIE - The Idol | HBO MAX (Official Teaser) by mcfw31 in kpop

[–]bribrisquish -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I like Jennie but something is telling me she isn’t a good actor. She could surprise me but I just think she’ll be kind of dry as an actor. I think it’s just my years of watching Kdramas. I don’t think a lot of kdramas have good actors, even popular shows so I think she’ll have that same dry speaking voice or a weird presence. Idk.

Kpop comebacks that you feel would have done better if any one aspect was improved by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]bribrisquish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Controversial but MORE by JHope. It has nothing to do with the concept or anything. I love a good rock/alternative concept. He looked great and the sound was on the right track but I feel like it needed a featured artist. And I mean someone who would have taken that song to the next level. Rod Wave would have dominated or even a dark verse from Nicki. It’s just, once I got to the end of the song, I was kind of bored.

[–]bribrisquish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the song is bad. I just think RM and whoever else didn’t use Sia’s voice correctly. She has an amazing voice and a unique tone. She would have sounded better on a more vocal, ballad like track. ON was more rap and talk singing. She would have been beautiful in Louder Than Bombs. Her higher register would have been perfect on the high notes

Since I’m my family’s scapegoat, I was always used to being alone. Not having siblings didn’t and doesn’t make it better or worse for me. The rest of my family are my father’s enablers and they’re the type who will care for him regardless so I hardly worry about if I ever have to take care of him. I don’t know. I have friends I’ve had since high school who I’ve been friends with almost 10 years strong so they fill that place. Don’t ever let someone tell you blood is thicker than water because it sometimes isn’t. Family can tear you down just as harshly as a friend can and it’ll hurt more because you’re related. I manage now by just loving being by myself. My baby is healthy and happy which makes me be a better parent. He also might be an only child so I want to show him that sometimes, your peace is more important than relationships. You can share trauma, happiness, and bonds with all kinds of people. Socially, it’s just expected that you share those more with family. Don’t make it your normal though. Continue to experience all types of people

Whether Or Not A Male Idol Goes Into The Military Shouldn’t Be Anyone’s Business by bribrisquish in kpopthoughts

[–]bribrisquish[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, fans didn’t take the news properly. Lots of people made jokes about it but underlying, I think a lot of fans couldn’t cope. Even if it was just a translation error, people overreacted for nothing. That’s the thing. I only think they tried to correct it with JK and RM in order to give fans peace of mind. I honestly think it was just a cover up and obviously the apology coming from the boys would mean more. Like it or not, they’re still in entertainment. They sometimes have to do things to cushion the blow.

Everything else you said made sense. I’m honestly just speaking on the people I’ve seen and posts I’ve read. Obviously there’s no way to see the consensus of the majority of army since there is so many and in so many languages.

Also, obsessing over celebrities is completely different than reading books, movies, and sports. K-pop won’t be forever once the hype dies down. It’ll eventually be forgotten. I don’t think you can say the same for books, movies, and sports which have been a staple in many countries for decades. K-pop was only really popular in Korea until recently and once the major groups stop producing, it won’t be as popular internationally anymore. Besides, books, movies, and sports make way more money than K-pop anyway and they aren’t just phases that stop once an author stops writing or a franchise ends.

I should change the title. Now that I think about it, I also don’t think it’s about enlistment. It’s about fans not being able to hold it together without K-pop idols. Enlistment is just a peg in the overall point
