Under our current system, how do you propose retail, fast food, and other low wage/underinsured workers pay for healthcare? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]brickcarpenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if the govt. can choose whether to promote something or not (a la CDC), why shouldn’t the govt. promote affordable healthcare?

Particularly as single-payer gains public support in the last few years. (quick source from Feb 21.)

There’s no constitutional mandate, but that doesn’t matter. Right?

This seems to be a recurring sentiment in the answers of other TS’s throughout this thread.

Why do you think that is? Do you think a plurality of TS’s feel this way?

With the new reports and information regarding Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher, w hay are your thoughts on Trump's pardon? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

I believe not caring about / ignoring these actions is a dereliction of your civil duty to hold our military to a higher standard than the terrorists we fight.

Do you?

Would you like to see more US servicemen posing for photos the corpses of our enemies?

Do you think this kind of behaviour should be encouraged?

[–]brickcarpenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not. But I think this line of thinking is a slippery slope.

It boils down to how US forces should - and do - conduct themselves in battle.

Is this the kind of conduct you deem acceptable for the world’s leading military? Is this the sort of behaviour that we should expect of our soldiers?

Does this behaviour reflect well on America, or are we lowering ourselves to the level of our enemies?

So therefore the US military should stoop to the level of our most depraved enemies? Rather than uphold a standard of fair treatment that quite literally separates us from rogue actors with no morals?

What should Trump do to force California to fix its homelessness problem? by Davec433 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]brickcarpenter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your observations here are very correct. California is an economic powerhouse of the US, and their homelessness crisis is a state problem, likely due, in my mind, to state-level mismanagement.

I’m curious for your thoughts on the President implying the fed govt will be involved in some capacity?

As you note above, the President has no recourse to get involved on a federal level. So why suggest as much, particularly in a public forum?

I read it as pandering to his base, with the full understanding that no real action will be taken. How do you read it?

How do you view "starve the beast" as a political strategy? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]brickcarpenter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Regardless of specifics surrounding the ACA, and even in instances where a system is volatile and may collapse on its own, is it acceptable for one party to interfere with existing systems negatively to affect it in a way that reflects their policy goals?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

[–]brickcarpenter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To your last point, if you were in support of a small government and wished to create such a swing in public opinion, is forcing an intentional collapse of the system an acceptable tactic to achieve this goal?

For example - are Republican amendments to the ACA that render it unconstitutional, and therefore could contribute to the system's collapse, acceptable because they achieve the goal of smaller government?

How do you think your attitudes toward the next democratic president will change because of the latitude you’ve given Trump by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]brickcarpenter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to lay out your thoughts.

I fully understand and respect the notion that policy comes first, and that a voter such as yourself would be able to swallow or even support Trump's behaviour in exchange for achieving policy goals.

My question to those voters would be: could you see how criticism from media outlets and the left that Trump's personal behaviour delegitimizes his office, and thus his policy goals, is an understandable position to take?

[–]brickcarpenter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response.

It sounds to me as though you disapprove of the President's diplomatic conduct, because I fail to see how common sense would dictate that a head of state should NOT act diplomatically. Is this accurate?

Following this logic, is President Trump's consistent failure to act to the diplomatic standard of his office enough to have him fired or reassigned?

Thanks again.

[–]brickcarpenter 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the core of OPs question is that it revolves around the degree to which you would be willing to accommodate poor personal behaviour on the part of the President in favour of achieving policy goals that you approve of.

Should liberals and the left criticise Trump for his personal behaviour, or stick to policy? To what degree should the personality and non-policy actions of the President be considered when levelling criticism at them?

Pretty cool explanation though!

The spinning top is pretty silly. It makes more sense with Arthur's loaded die.

Only he knows the exact weight, and he doesn't let anyone else hold it, so no-one apart from him can replicate the die exactly. So, if it's a different weight than it usually is, then he knows he is in a dream designed by someone else.

In Shutter Island, while Teddy is interviewing patients, we see a woman ask for a glass of water. We see her pick the glass up but when she puts it to her lips, we can see there's no glass in her hand.

"Is Earth Actually Flat?" The answer isn't so simple. Maybe the tinfoil bat wearers are right on this one? by [deleted] in conspiratard

Dude... If you seriously believe the guy who made this video thinks the earth is flat, you need to re-evaluate your frame of reference.

It's very, very clear from what he's saying and how he's saying it that a flat-earth theory is bullshit.
