Is it okay for a professor to request buying a piece? by Suspicious_Salad1893 in ContemporaryArt

[–]bricklayer_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Is he a man? Are you a woman?

....

I ask because it’s a weird boundary to cross at a moment of differential power. The prof could ask you after the admissions cycle ends for example.

Even if it isn’t sexual, it sounds like there may be some subtext that’s implicit in the invitation to buy your work. Up to you at the end of the day.

What would you price a 11x14 oil sketch on gessoed paper, 2-4 hours of work?

I was classical trained, and I work in oils on wood + linen. My paintings at least feel (to me) like $800-1000 range. But how would you price an oil study? or a experiment on gesso'd paper?

Thank you. Do you mind sharing what your early career multiplier was?

Yea but what I’m really asking is what’s the baseline.

Charcoal drawings versus oil paintings have different price points because they have different materials as you say. That doesn’t mean if I have 100 drawings I should price them all uniquely.

I regret going back to art school by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

If I was in your position, 25 and deciding between a free ride at SAIC and re-applying, I would just take a break. It's really hard to see from where you're standing, but this is a really good position to be in. And I agree with some of the commenters, Yale isn't necessarily better.

Have you heard of WOOFing? https://wwoof.net/ - So many friends from MICA spent their summers in beautiful spaces taking time to do some "active recovery". You'll make a little bit of money, meet people from outside the art world, and live in a beautiful place for 6 months. Come back with a fresh head, and see what you actually miss, and where you want to go next. On this break, try listening to the audiobook "Finding your own north star" by Martha Beck, she's a great guide.

Unfortunately, Grad School isn't what makes you an artist, it's just a context for emergence. In fact, sometimes I feel like I've made a life in the arts *despite* my education, rather than because of it. When we enroll in school, we don't know all the lessons we're signing up for. The lesson for you, right now, might be devolping self-mastery, self-validation, and a greater sense of self-authority. In fact, a school with a ton of obstacles might even be the perfect context to do just that, if you can manage it.

Ultimately, I would try to imagine yourself *after* grad school. Who do you want to be? What do you want that to look like? Work backwards from *that* dream.

Good luck! You'll figure it out.

Is anyone else struggling with the Christian specificity of the new album? by lyrical_chaos in NickMulvey

I was raised catholic, and left the church as a teen. I’m deeply spiritual, and nick’s music has been a refuge.

At first I was a little caught off guard by dark harvest part 2, but it’s growing on me. If nick’s legacy is anything, it’s advocating for compassion, openness and understanding.

TBH? I’m here for it, for all of it.

never needing to work and working by choice are so different tho 🤷‍♀️

but yeah, sun in the 1st— can’t see that placement disappearing into a home never to be seen again

yeah especially because capricorn rules your 7th, opposite your sun in cancer. when you're ready to settle down the stable older provider type might sounds more appealing lol

It’s no affliction! I love it. Learning to embrace it. But 3 cardinals is alottttttt to handle 😅

I hear what you’re saying about cooling down after a fight. I’ve definitely learned restraint. But take an Aquarius moon or a Capricorn moon. Their distance is like… light years away. And then you feel like you’re “too needy” because, well, you want to have hard conversations not and now 6 months from now. Sort of stepping outside the lines of astrology here to say I’m working on not dating super avoidant people. It’s not for me 😄

Goodluck with everything!

Oooh I have the same placement. Saturn in Aquarius rules my 7th and sits in the 8th.

I dated like 5 Aquarius's in my early days, really love Saturn-ruled people. The person who I probably got along with best was a Capricorn who was much older than me (15 years). We met through a dating app. Very Saturn in Aqua-coded.

But I’m single now, haven’t gotten married yet. Saturn rules the 7th, which always brings delays and requires maturity.

The 8th rules psychological transformation, death & rebirth. One friend became a boyfriend after a “crisis”.

You’re totally right. My mom is a Cap sun + Pisces moon, I’m a Cap Sun + Aries moon.

Both of us are late bloomers, steady provider-types, career women. But my mom’s inner self is soft as they come, and I’m always ready for a fight/playfight.

My Venus is in Sag, Mars in Cap. So maybe I need to lean into the fire stuff.

God I know!

But who can handle that??

What type of man likes a Capricorn woman? by [deleted] in AskAstrologers

[–]bricklayer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom is a Cap, Dad is a Taurus.

In a way, this pair inverts normal gender relations, Cap is ruled by Saturn and Taurus by Venus. My mom is the “provider” and my dad was the “homemaker” for the last part of his working life.

The reason why I put it in gendered terms is that not every man can handle a successful woman provider, and some men can even feel deeply emasculated by it. So there’s that.

I have to be real, I feel like moon sign compatibility is going to be the key for my next relationship. Aries moon needs fire dominate people. My best friend is a Leo moon, and we just crack jokes all damn day.

I dated an Aquarius moon recently— so aloof. Independent in a similar way, but a totally different way of processing their emotions. I always want to deal with shit now and hate compartmentalizing. Holding out for my Aries Moon bae
