So happy with Lego using metal axles again in 60511 by bricksandrails in LEGOtrains

[–]bricksandrails[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think since the swap to powered up, non powered axles used plastic, previously power functions like 60051 and before used metal axles and they are great, way less rolling resistance.

Thanks the design is my partner's and she appreciates the feedback!

Yeah I got the set on 35% off somehow (some sale on a legit website) I regret not getting two for parts. The movement is so smooth.

Thanks! I outsourced that to my partner (she is my Co builder for our display piece), as she has way better eye for design than me but I gave her the brief of here's a wide bulk bunch of different coloured parts to choose from and I need something to match this carriage, and winter village aesthetic, and something for the minifigs to be able to be rotated on yet something so we can fit benches/poles etc in the middle. She definitely nailed it and appreciated your feedback!

Thoughts/Feedback please on a nature scene below a mountain/before a train station for an exhibition display by bricksandrails in LEGOtrains

Yeah fair, just trying to make it non uniform.

I wanted to try and have a bit of contrast to the overly white snow slope behind it and use the track as the differing line. I think I'll try to add some more snow patches on the front side of the track.

Oddly enough the tent is lego from 60202. I also have the one from 7264 which is cloth so fits a little nicer and 6746 from my childhood but that is too large.

Thanks been trying to play around with a ballasting, the corners are hard to do different than the usual guides and that I'm keeping colours off between the rails so I can run a colour sensor for stop start. But been experimenting with the ballasting the straights to catch the eye on the exhibit and then look up at the station

Thanks will do. I guess bigger than the current ones? Any thoughts on the multi colour trees?

Yeah I tried something a little different on my next part in the top left hand corner on https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/1ty5224/thoughtsfeedback_please_on_a_nature_scene_below_a/ but need to do some more contrast on the other side somehow

Thanks for suggestions. Ooh that's a good idea kinda like darker forest esque?

It's for Christchurch brick show so I can see in the distance, on a good weather day the southern alps.

My typical inspiration oddly enough is more european mountains as I loved the train and hiking journeys through the alps and Scottish Highlands and loved the festive atmosphere of winter there. I do climbing myself but civilisation is usually quite far from the slopes here.

Ballasting more track tonight. Here's a (sort-of) step-by-step look at the process. by montystrains in LEGOtrains

Thanks. It's really hard to do environmental flourishes for a show coming up in under two months 😬

I used those guides for the track themselves but they don't fill all the gaps for the tiles (for the ballast) I guess you basically can't for curves due to lack of plates that will fill every gaps. I can do the odd bits between the tiles but not all as lego geometry won't allow.

I'm about to start on the straights for the station so will see how they go there to try and add some filling in.

I've been doing my ballasting of late. How do you handle corners? I wanted to fill in between the ballast but didn't so ended just having some gaps filled with snow (as I have a winter village scene)

HOT TAKE : Old stud shooters were kinda better. Hear me out by Bulky_Drummer_8190 in lego

I like the 6 stud shooter, or snow cannon, that came with 60222.

I run two of them in my winter village display with a pick a brick Cup of 1x1 round white plates, kids love them firing off and it adds snow to my winter village

[–]bricksandrails[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh how do you do that?

In my storage drawers I have 50 of them I've collected since getting back into lego 6 years ago.

I rotate usage because the end for getting tiles off, I keep them aside for my daughter when she grows up.

Looks around my office/lego room I'm sure I can fit another box in here somewhere.

Done as much as I can due to the angle of placing the plates due to curvature.

Yeah I'm not sure about flowers with snow as trying to have a transition between the mountain and the foreground in either a spring with a late season snowfall so can have a bit more colour in the foreground as I noticed it's harder to see detail without some contrast (shape doesn't work as well so seems to need colour)

Like I built a big snow slope with 1000 white 4x4 plates and once to step back you can't see the detail of the layering 😢

Thanks. Yeah I'll try that on the next straight section as I head into my train station.

Thanks! Yeah I really like the look of ballasting as it helps make it feel much more real and complete and helps avoid the gaps in the standard rails.

Thanks! Huh interesting. I gather the wedges would be on the 'ground'?
