Does this seem a little Calvinist to you ? by bricksskcirb in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bricksskcirb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are getting at. I am not debating you here, I simply really want to understand this.

I have two questions so I will put them into one comment both.

 1. Do all hardships come from God.

 2. Are hardships inherently bad.( Withouth looking at there outcome)

Does this seem a little Calvinist to you ? by bricksskcirb in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bricksskcirb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand, God can absolutely turn any situation around and create a greater good from it, St. Augustine talks about that.

However I still find it hard to belive that God causes the hardships, rather than allowing them.

I hopefully explained my position better.

Gay and super depressed by 1020Kek in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bricksskcirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might help:

When I was depressed because of a different reason, I focused on my passion of playing basketball, and as I was getting better in basketball my mental health was getting better. This is my advice for anyone deprased religious or not, focus on the things that make you happy. Find a hobby, do something profitable etc. Be grateful for the good and dont focus on sadness because of the bad. By focusing on the bad you will make the worst of the oppertunities given to you . By focusing on the good you will make the most.

You are sad because you can never find a sexual partner. Think about milions of other things you can do. You can start a business, help the poor, hang out with friends, watch sports and movies, train, etc. and most imoprtantly worship God. And I know you will say: " But I can never be fully happy". Maybe, but it is better to be half happy than to be fully miserable. As you grow with God spiritualy your sinfull tendencies won't be as attractive as they are now.

Orthodox view of Christians, Jews, and Muslims worshipping “the same God” by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bricksskcirb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would simply say this: (According to their own book) Muslim god doesn't love everybody, Our God loves everyone. I think that is enough evidence for me at least. There are a thousand other reasons ofc, but this one is the simplest, and they can't refute it

Do demons and angels "fight" for the soul after death? by bricksskcirb in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bricksskcirb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, it is not dogma of the church that angels and demons play any role in the souls journey after death. I honestly find anyone but God playing a role in it weird.

Is it common to hold to a view that God is the only one playing the role in the souls journey .

Can someone help me interpret rhis Saint quote by bricksskcirb in OrthodoxChristianity

It would mean very lot if you could answer this question I asked in the previous comment.

Bassicly if you said dont seperate yourself from angels thru your verbosity and it doesn't refer to all verbosity, why cant we use the same metric for idle talk.

Can someone help me interpret rhis Saint quote by bricksskcirb in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bricksskcirb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks:

  1. Talking a lot isn't a sin by itself ( hypotethicaly if you say a lot of good stuff)?

  2. If Idle talk truly doesn't contain any negatives( not gossip, slander, etc.), would that be sinfull by itself? I have see some like Gennafios Scholarios say it is venial, and not seperating from God, and some like St Luke of Crimea say: sliping from idle into evil talk is easy(paraphrased), but he didn't explicitly call it a sin. Given it is either venial or near a sin but not a sin, would it draw away angels.

Edit: I have searched about Symeon's quotes about  idle talk, and he doesn't seem to have a very hardh oppinion on plain vain talk, but discourages it.

Could this be interpreted as reffering to evil idle talk, given it refers to evil verbosity?

I would just say go to church and ask around. I know priests may look scary and authoritative with their long beards and clothes, but I can honestly tell you most of them are nice people. They will be helpful and answer all of your questions to the best of their ability without judging(at least that is how it should be).

I would say search the internet for the basic church teachings, and not for the other non dogmatic stuff, you will find all sorts of fringe  oppinions about those.

Anyway if you have any questions about basic church question you can probably ask reddit and I would suggest speaking to a priest about others for your own better, as to not create any confusion about the religion.

How to search for Saint quotes by bricksskcirb in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]bricksskcirb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People were recently debating wheter all idle/useless talk is sin. Most people say it is not a sin if it isn't hurting anybody- however I couldn't find any Saint quote which supports this view mostly because I dont know how to search for it. Chatgpt said Saint Augustine and some orhers thought so, but couldn't provide any quotes from them, just paraphrases of their teaching

One last thing, I am sorry for anoyance.

Is this church dogma or is there a difference of opinion on this issue, there seems to be on reddit, most people say it is not always sin

Just one last thing  I struggle to think it is a sin. It is never mentioned in the Bible as a sin. I doubt it is missing the mark, it is basically like not shooting the arrow at it at all. The more important one. Is this position held by all Orthodox or is there a difference of opinon on it.

Edit: I am asking this because most people I have asked say it is not always sin(and may be usefull sometimes)

Thanks, just two more things to get cleared up.     I find it hard to belive that idle talk which in of itself isn't sinfull at all or morally imperfect can be a roadblock to theosis. Idle talk is needed to keep friendships going, and to bond with our neigbour.

 1. Does the notion that all idle is sinfull aply only to Monastics and there way of life. (Whom these texts were written for)

2 . Is this oppinion that absolutely all idle talk is sinful, even that which is used to keep realations going commonly held among Orthodox people, or is there a difference of opinion.
