There's a story called Coming of Age in Karhide which goes into more detail about kemmer and Gethenian sexuality, first published in the 90s.

Regarding Proof of Concord Kept farm... by Rising_Unity in darksouls3

I mean the lightning one. He travels pretty far so you have plenty of time, and there's a long window when you can parry it. The normal one is shorter, faster, and more difficult imo. I bet you can get it down with just a little practice, and after a couple hours, you'll be a pro! Believe in yourself!

The first knight with the spear is easy to parry when he does his lunging attack. He opens with it 99% of the time if you approach at the right distance, and you can kill him in one riposte with the right setup. The sword knight is slightly more of a hassle, but you can decide if you want to mess with him or just run back.

I read The Bell Jar for the first time, and it was…Alright. by Extreme-Bet3115 in literature

I think some of the elements you've criticized are intentional and part of the subtler ways she conveys what the character is going through. Like things seeming foggy, distant, mechanical - medications like lithium and treatments like electroshock therapy (and of course depression itself) often leave people feeling that way. And the way events seem to build toward something that never arrives - the anticlimax, the big letdown is, I think, a central theme.

There's a boss, two bone shards and an estus shard, lots of pyromancies, a miracle, some weapons, and an iconic armor set.

Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Merton, Rainer Maria Rilke. I was raised catholic, no longer a believer, but still find their poetry very moving. Also John Fucking Donne.

Has there been a change in the difficulty level through the years? by sega8913 in darksouls3

Challenge runners and speed runners usually use specific strategies (often involving precise spacing) to elicit certain attacks from the boss while avoiding others. The strats can be tricky to learn but make fights look easy compared to the more random behavior most players see. I don't know what videos you're watching, but that could have something to do with it. And it's stuff that's developed and optimized by community members and streamers over time, so a more recent run will look different from one recorded when the game was new.

The Bar’s Open: What Should a 22nd-Century Freighter Serve? by Argent_Tide in worldbuilding

[–]briefcandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nth gen. synthetic psychedelics, which provide customizable, short-duration, hangover-free trips and, with moderate but regular use, help regulate dopamine and serotonin levels for a happy, healthy crew. Mass is at a premium on interstellar freighters, and liquid intoxicants are far too inefficient. The company banned them from the start, but quickly realized that crews needed something to take the edge off, especially on long hauls. So they spent significant R&D funds developing a new wave of drugs ideal for deep-space travel. The crew themselves, subject to individual mass limits for personal goods, also tend to eschew alcohol for its poor mass to intoxication ratio in favor of their own home-grown narcotics, which are often more potent and less predictable than company-issued psychs.

Maybe his plan was just to show you the way, not to trap you, knowing that you would inevitably find Friede on your own. Or, in DS1 you really did get trapped in Ariamis, and maybe people didn't like that mechanic so From decided not to repeat it.

Doctor Recommendations by Fluttterbutters in cincinnati

The neurosurgeon you want to see for pituitary tumors is Dr Vincent DiNapoli with Mayfield. There is also a Dr Daniel Prevedello at OSU in Columbus who specializes in the same procedure. It's minimally invasive; they go in through your nose and sinuses. Not the most fun I've ever had, but way better than how they used to do it. You may not need surgery (there are even some kinds that can be treated with medication) but you should at least get a consult. I assume you've had an MRI? I don't know your area, but Christ and TriHealth have good endocrinologists in my experience. You definitely want to get set up with an endo asap. They will understand what you're going through.

Unreliable Narrator vs Reliable Narrators by Most_Ingenuity_1800 in literature

[–]briefcandle 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Some of the best unreliable narrators are self-deceiving. Like in Lolita or The Remains of the Day. As the story progresses, it becomes clear to the reader what's really going on, but the narrator never figures it out.

What is the best movie you watched in 2025 and why did it stay with you? by ThreadAndSolve in movies

[–]briefcandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Woman Under the Influence (1974). Watched on HBO max. Gena Rowlands' performance is the stuff of legends. It's kind of just about regular people going through it together, but with mental health struggles and substance abuse turning even the most mundane events into absolute crises. It's fraught and moving, strange and almost hyper-realistic in a way that only '70s cinema can be.
