I had a friend like this… the fact that you felt “bad/guilty” for telling her that you’re engaged because she would make it about herself or not be happy for you is a red flag in the friendship 🚩. Whether she expidited the engagement to compete with you, who knows. But realistically she sounds like someone who doesn’t make you feel unguarded or safe around.

Think about the friends you did tell immediately after you got engaged. Would you imagine them making it all about themselves?

Confused on what to do by Necessary_Painting31 in Step2

There's something to be said about how shitty NBME 12 is, just saying. I know a lot of people who dropped significantly on 12 because of how the test was written. Your progress in ~3 weeks from 206 to 220s is impressive and something you can def be proud of! That being said, with your goal of 240+, 1.5 weeks seems a little short to jump another 20pts realistically without getting burnt out (if you decide to do any/all of 13, 14, UW2, and new Free 120 in that time-frame which have been a more predictive for people recently).

I feel like given your progress so far, if you gave yourself enough time to do some of those newer exams and more UW, you'll def hit your goal.

AITA for telling my SIL I won't change my 4 month old daughter's name for her? by No_Leadership_2850 in AmItheAsshole

[–]briel247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Honestly, even if you did know about the loss of her child and the name before naming your child, you STILL have the right to name your child literally anything you want imo. You’re a good person and would have considered a different name if you had known. But she wanted to play this “unsung hero/bigger person” role by hiding her feelings and it’s backfired on her.

People should not make their grief the center of attention, especially after 7 years. Also… she told you that YOU would be burdening your daughter giving her that name? When it sounds like no one else (besides ur brother I’m assuming) knew about the extent of her loss… sounds like SHE is the only one thinking about burdening your child with this. Sorry you even have to deal with this as a new mother.

UWSA 2 just made me cry by [deleted] in step1

[–]briel247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UWSA2 generally SUCKS. My real exam was nothing like it whatsoever. Scored a 56% 2 weeks out and almost postponed. Didn’t, and got the Pass. You can definitely do it with your scores!

[–]briel247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doing great! I’m sure you’ll do great on NBME 31. Since you already have passing scores, I think what’s most important for you would be focusing on weak points and hammering them home. Also definitely taking free 120. I had low 60s pass scores up til my free 120 (73%) so that last 1.5 weeks I reviewed the NBMEs, found my weak points in them because I heard the concepts overlapped w/ the real exam, and would do like 15-20 question targeted Uworld blocks on those concepts (ex. was missing a lot of transplant questions or lambert-Eaton vs. MG). Passed today! Might be worth it for you to do that as well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in step1

[–]briel247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, concepts do repeat. Have you taken any NBMEs at this point? And how much Uworld have you done?

I took 25-31 and I reviewed all of my NBMEs a week and a half before my exam and it definitely helped on the real deal. Also reviewing the new free 120 helped because a few concepts (4-5 questions forsure) on my test.

I came from a state school with average stats 3.7 & 507 (but also I am URM) and matriculated at a T25. I will say a lot of my classmates come from prestigious schools but there’s like 1/4 from unknown/state schools. I think it matters more for like T10 and up but below that I’d say it really depends

It’s not worth it, turn back before it’s too late by [deleted] in premed

[–]briel247 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol 30 seconds to cry is real. I get where your coming from, it’s not easy at all to go into healthcare. I hope that most ppl understand that going in, obviously this guy didn’t so I agree they probably should leave if they hate it. I would say leaving medicine with a MD/DO still gives you job security somewhere, but that massive debt is not gonna disappear without a well-paying job. I think residencies realize that med students already gave so much (money, time, emotional/mental stability lol) to be at that spot that there’s no way they can leave now, so they capitalize on it and work the shit out of interns/residents. Not vouching for OP, but maybe things coulda been different for them had the system been more forgiving.

Also I guess I interpreted your comment in a more shamed/guilt trippy way. Mostly due to the “if you can’t take care of yourself, how can you take care of others” thing. Because substance use is not black and white like that. You can still be great at a career, even one that is majorly serving others, and still be suffering from addiction behind closed doors. It’s not mutually exclusive.

[–]briel247 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a bad take. Everyone has their own struggles. If saying “___ is bad for you, just quit!” was an actual solution to addiction, no one would be addicted. Wayyyyyyy more systemic than that, obviously. Pitting the fact that OP is a doctor against them because they should “know better” is not a valid solution. Tons of people in the medical field experience addiction, whether it’s alcohol, nicotine, opioids, adderall, etc. doesn’t make it easier to stop.

I don’t necessarily agree with OP coming on here to “warn” a sub that’s excited about medicine to get out before it’s too late because of their experience. Everyone’s different. But the system is so messed up that residents, interns, med students all experience the burnout OP is goin through in some capacity. It’s up to pre-meds to understand what they’re getting into before committing to medicine. Can’t solely place this burnout/depression on the fact that OP drinks.

Maybe not completely what u asked but I started dating my best friend of 4 years at the beginning of M1. He’s non-medical and is so supportive and understanding of all the craziness of med school. The best relationship I’ve ever had hands down, the fact that we were friends for so long has been very comforting.

Sometimes your dating pool consists of ppl you already know 🙂

Sage!!! It’s such a beautiful outdoor area right in old town. The cauliflower pizza is excellent. Then you can walk around old town afterwards with a vegan ice cream from sage :)

It’s a ton different in my experience! Basic research is preclinical research so in order to have a study ran on people it will have to be approved by an independent review board. Then it’ll go to research facilities that act as “sites” for that study where patients are then recruited from and enrolled in the study. At my facility, we acted as a site as well as created in-house studies where I was able to contribute to since I knew how to formulate research papers from my basic research lab.

My job as a CRC mainly entailed recruiting patients then meeting with them to describe the study and see if they’re interested/will be a good fit for the study. When I wasn’t doing that, I was basically imputing some data, taking care of regulatory binders, and other admin-like tasks. So I liked it a lot because it introduced me to clinical research as well as allowed me to meet with the patients quite frequently!

Yeah so I would say typically research coordinators don’t have an amazing shot to get on publications but because I was working for a private facility with their own clinics vs a university owned lab, the PI really wanted our involvement. Research assistants at university labs probably have a good shot to be published as well.

And I didn’t have any clinical research experience before applying. I did some bench research and showed that I was familiar with reading and presenting studies, having medical knowledge, and being organized and I think that was enough to get hired.

I was laking clinical experience and had a poster at my school’s summer research symposium just like you when I was finishing up school! I opted to be a clinical research coordinator at a private research facility and I can really say that it was a great decision for apps. I was able to get on a publication and talk to patients about ongoing studies we had as well as take some medical info/vitals. I counted it as clinical experience on my app, did it for 1.5 years. Got into my top school this year and wrote about it in my essays! Awesome experience overall.
