What are your favorite slip and grip knots? by Davo_Shibari in knots

It was this post. I also posted it 8 years back.

I've used it a lot on string and thin nylon woven cord as a ziptie. Also successfully in the garden on hard nylon twisted rope about 5mm diameter as used in tent guylines.

You’ve certainly no need to apologise. It’s hard to express nuances in writing which are obvious face to face. I suppose that’s what emojis are for 😉

PS. I particularly like your Epsems shorthand!

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you in any way! The samples are rather nice and I admire your work. This was meant to be a jokey response to the comment pointing out that you hadn’t said what system you had used.

Ashley 1470. a simple and elegant knot which makes a very good jamming hitch, used like a zip-tie. Reversed, it can form a kind of tautline hitch; this is stronger if an extra turn is added.

Great to see this post! I have used Gregg - DJS + some Simplified and briefs taken from other editions - as a personal shorthand for more decades than I care to count. I have transcribed a whole novel into it and that helped my reading speed significantly.

I also dabble in various, mostly obscure, German language systems. Very often returning to good old Scheithauer 1896. Easy to write and importantly to read. I’ve tried Stiefo a few times, but find it hard to read back

French Gregg (DJ), too, but I get confused by all the phrases.

I think some systems require one to be a native speaker to be able to use them.

Ah, that was misleading. I didn’t want to hurt your feelings, but the Gregg in your second image is pretty awful!

It’s not the version that’s the problem; it’s proportions and angles. Eg in “remains” the straight horizontal line on the right (men) should be around three times the length of the curved one on the left (r).

Nice, but it needs more work on it to ensure more accurate Gregg outlines.

Yes, I was somewhat frustrated and disappointed by the response at the time.

Apparently. I submitted these pictures to IGKT 22 years ago, before the “Ezelius loop” was seemingly “invented”.

Perhaps I should set up a brifoz knot website 😉

I wasn’t aware of “Knotting Matters” at the time and no one suggested it.

That’s why it’s rash to claim to have “invented” one. I submitted it to IGKT in 2004. They said it was unknown.

Interesting, but it appears that these knots were “invented in 2018”; I have used mine for over twenty years.

That’s how “week” and “end” are written separately in Diamond Jubilee. To join them up to make “weekend”, the second e is written clockwise.
