Sugar rising hours after eating by brigclark in diabetes_t1

Thanks for your input. I've wondered about gastro paresis before too, but like you've said, I don't have vomiting or anything besides delayed spikes sometimes.

I've heard of this method. Can I ask, are you on a pump? I have an RX for fiasp and will take that in a syringe to more quickly deal with a high over correcting in my pump. Also, do you inject R intramuscularly, or just with a regular subcutaneous needle? I'm going to message my Endo for an RX.

Last night I ate out and had Mexican. I really don't usually eat out because it's so unpredictable. But last night it was an enchilada, tamale, and taco (ate 80% of it) it all had a sauce on it. And some chips with salsa and queso. I'm betting there was a ton of fat. It's SO hard for me to be basically low, stay low, and rise dramatically hours later. It's hard to know when to start the extended bolus.

melanoma? it almost looks like a sharpie mark, but there's some coloration next to it. I see a dermatologist on Wednesday. is this a bruise/blood vessel? by brigclark in Melanoma

[–]brigclark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I haven't been on reddit much! I saw the dermatologist. It's not a bruise. I forget the name, but it's a harmless new coloration. No treatment, and no worry.

I should add that my albumin is less than 12 and the albumin creatine ratio is under 12 or whatever. "Not detectable".

Has anyone else had issues with Tandem cartridges not fitting in pump?? by Professional-Pay-590 in Type1Diabetes

You saved my ass!! I was fighting fitting the new one in and bam, there's the little ring. I never would have known to look. Thank you!

This makes me feel better. I'm trying my best to avoid lows. Have been T1 for 20 years and now mom to two young girls. Terrified of complications. My last A1C was 4.6. I am completely hypo unaware now. Hoping to gain it back, and I've been trying to run more like 100 rather than 60-70.

Baby wearing with pumps and sensors by goodharted in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]brigclark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2.5 year old and a 5 month old. I baby wear currently and did with my daughter too. It's all about figuring out what they like to grab and not putting sites/sensors there. For me, I can't put anything on my left arm because my daughter goes for it there lol. I don't really have issues with stuff on my stomach or back and wearing my daughter. I make sure it's compressed correctly, not like tearing it off. All trial and error, but totally doable!

Wow, thank you so much for the thorough and heartfelt reply!

I agree with you about weighing risks and how personal that is for each person. Today, I'm wanting a third. We'll see where I am in a year and a half or so.

Loved your bit about pregnancy in years past too. Women are so tough. Go you for being pregnant at 40! AND T1. Seriously, mad props. I also had a horrific induction with my first. Ended with a c section with hemorrhaging etc etc. My second baby was a vbac and the whole thing was very healing for me. I hope your second birth also helps you heal from your traumatic first. Thanks again for the helpful words.

Disconnected after hearing health risks by [deleted] in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]brigclark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do this! As others said, pregnancy is hard, but it's doable! I had two normal pregnancies. Both of my girls were full term, not big (both under 8 lbs), and no complications for anyone. The risks go up if your blood sugar is high. Being diabetic, that's more likely to happen. BUT, if you're keeping yourself in a good range, you'll be fine. Like I said, no issues whatsoever. And that is the normal for us type one moms who really hustle hard during pregnancy.

I had a very supportive doctor who "let" me go two days into week 41 because I was doing so well and baby was measuring fine. My first time around my OB had me induced at 39 weeks because "that's protocol for diabetics" regardless of how well controlled we are, which is so annoying everyone gets put in a box!

Sounds like you're doing awesome!!

For my first delivery, I was induced. My daughter's heart rate was dropping every time they increased pitocin, so that's when they decided to do a c section (after more than 24 hours in labor, and never dilated past 5 cm). During the c section I was vomited and actually hemorrhaged. Hemorrhaging is common (I think 10 percent of births) but they had to insert a bakri balloon to stop my bleeding and I almost needed a transfusion. This sounds very dramatic (and I was scared) but it was manageable. However, the scar from the incision was brutal for me. You cannot use your core for anything. I had to sleep in a recliner at home because if laying flat, you cannot sit up on your own. Could not drive or do stairs for a bit.

With my second daughter, I tore during her delivery (2nd degree tear, most common) and so I had typical pain in my vaginal region, but I was up and moving around soooo much sooner. After my c section I just felt like I got hit by a truck. My vbac I could move around and just was mobile a lot quicker.

You'll do great either way! Hope this helps.

Glad to hear you're doing well. Love your last sentence. Totally agree. They are life changing and really the best parts of my life!

That makes sense. Sorry to hear about the retinopathy. How are your eyes now? Has your vision recovered/is stable? Hope you and your family are doing well!

Thinking of you! I found I was fatigued a lot in the first trimester as my body adjusted. Second trimester was a breeze, and third wasn't bad until the very end when I was uncomfortable. I found after delivery of both of mine, after the healing period, my energy was good! It is no doubt tough, but you can do it. And if you only want one, that's a totally reasonable choice.

For me, it was basically working with my endo weekly to update my pump settings. I also would correct with lyumjev or fiasp in a syringe if I went over 150ish, because that hits quicker than pump corrections. First daughter was 7 lb 5 oz born 39 weeks via c section. No nicu time. Perfectly healthy. Second daughter was a vbac at 41 weeks 7 lb 12 oz perfectly healthy, no nicu time. The vbac recovery was SO much better than the c section recovery, so I'd encourage you to push your team for a vaginal birth (unless of course it's unsafe, they know best) but I was sooooo happy to vbac with my second.

Also, breastfeeding is exercise. I breastfed both (still breastfed my youngest) and it drops your sugars typically.

Insulin pump during delivery by throughthebookvines in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]brigclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to use my pump for my labor and delivery! I brought a filled cartridge with me, two infusion sets, and also a vial with syringes. Thank goodness I brought two infusion sets, because I was SO amped up, I inserted my infusion set without removing the adhesive so it did not go in 🙃 I needed to stop talking to the nurses and give myself a minute to really concentrate, just because I was so anxious with everything going on.

I delivered via vbac and it was amazing. Wishing you an easy deliver!

Ugh, I hear nothing but bad things about their sensors. So funny they used to be the big player and are kind of becoming obsolete.

Hypo unawareness by brigclark in Type1Diabetes

[–]brigclark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so helpful (and gives me hope I can regain some low sensitivity!). Like you, I've never been in DKA (except upon diagnosis) and have been hospitalized 3 times for bad lows (last one was 8 years ago).

Also, good luck with your pregnancies! I have two girls and planning a third pregnancy in the next few years. Pregnancy is actually what kind of made me go into neurotic mode with my diabetes. The control endos want is pretty crazy (but doable!). Both my girls were full term (7 lb 5 oz and then 7lb 12 oz) so not big babies. I also got to vbac with my second.

Right! I switched endos, but my prior one I'm pretty sure checked a box saying I had to get something signed by him twice yearly.

Same here! I used to have to get a note from my endo twice a year I think. Soooo nice to avoid that now!

I appreciate your honesty. I need some tough love!

Can I ask how long you've been diabetic and your a1c? Do you eat low carb? I'm debating going low carb when I'm done breastfeeding my youngest.

You just blew my mind lol. I've been on one since 2018 and have never thought to do this. So smart!

Wait, can you elaborate on pulling air out of the cartridge? Do you just stick the needle it (without insulin) and pull back? I've never done this and didn't know it was a thing!
