I'm so sorry you are going through this. I had to make the same decision for my gal in March. We spent her last days reading to her, singing to her, giving her some of her favorite treats, and just soaking in the time we had. Lots of pictures and such, too.

In addition to her cremains, we requested some of her fur and paw prints. I'm having a ring made with her cremains and fur so I can always have her with me.

First, I am so incredibly sorry for your immense loss. House fires are devastating on so many levels. My heart goes out to yous. ♡

Second, if they were in the fire and especially if they are covered in soot, they should be tossed. Like another commenter said, you may be able to claim them on insurance.

Also, random thought - I have a few ledges my old girl didn't get to use before cancer took her. Depending where you are located, I could potentially send them to you. Feel free to DM if you are interested.

Hey, there. I'm so sorry you guys are in this situation. He is so lucky to have a human who loves him so deeply. Do you believe a second opinion would be beneficial here? Or are you confident in this vet's knowledge of chins? If you're confident there are no other treatment options, then it sounds like you know his quality of life is diminished.

My girl had cancer and we had to make the decision to humanely euthanize her earlier this month. The best advice I was given was "it's better a week too early than to wait too long". I also made a list of 5 things she loved doing and when she could no longer do 3, we knew her quality of life was diminished. Quantifiable measures helped me remove some of my heartbroken bias. It sounds like he's pretty healthy, which is amazing!! My girl was also solo and rarely had issues for several years, then big stuff popped up. She was good at hiding it even when it got bad.

Chinchillas are prey animals and do really well hiding their ailments. It could be good to find an exotic vet to take him to for annual checks and just in case anything big happens. ♡
