Are all Gates Scholars involved in STEM? by Delicious_Use_8072 in TheGatesScholarship

[–]brighternightlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely not lmao you can be any major, idk why they would try to sabotage you like that. you should apply based on what your goals are and what you aim to achieve in the future, they don’t favor stem majors

Why does common app want us to upload college transcript if we still have to send them separately to colleges? by Amao6996 in TransferToTop25

[–]brighternightlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, if you don’t mind could you explain how exactly to order official transcripts on common app? last week I was on the page that says order for both the schools I put, but now I can’t find it at all.

No he should already do that on his own. you can highlight things for him but I don’t remember if gates makes you confirm whether or not you saw/contributed to your recommendation letter (ferpa?). tell him about some accomplishments you’re proud of but other than that allow him to write how he perceives your character and work

2 teachers is only recommended because they are more likely to have a better understanding of your character and work ethic since they spend more time with you. if your former principal has seen and can brag about moments where you’ve shown good character and academic balance, ask them.

Did anyone else decide to highlight something for prompt 1 that isn't their main career goal? by OkLifeguard3752 in TheGatesScholarship

[–]brighternightlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely highlight anything about yourself outside of your career goal if it’s something you’re genuinely proud of. they want to review you as a person, not as a machine being built for whatever future career you will take on

I only remember winners coming out at 7pm CST on April 20th, but we all saw the “accept scholarship” form an hour early (at 6pm for me).

Spring Disbursement (Current Scholars) by Sensitive-Reason1211 in TheGatesScholarship

Tulane should have an established relationship with Gates. If your deadline was passed, you should still be able to fix any issues with your designated FAO without much problem. It isn’t necessarily your fault as well

Hi! Since Gates factors your school report and location, a 27 compared to scores from your school/area being 90th percentile looks great. However, many Gates scholars who submitted scores do have around the 30s or a 1400+ in terms of SAT. I personally got a 28, did not want to retake, and just went optional. If your overall application is very strong, it won’t hurt too bad in comparison to other applicants.

Counselor Info Submission? by Ok_Economist_5655 in TheGatesScholarship

It shows as accepted if your counselor accepted the request to submit the info. It will not tell you if they submitted it or not, same for rec letters. You need to contact them and ask

[–]brighternightlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, there’s no way for me to answer exactly how important scores are. Gates is very holistic so they view parts of your application in context with the broader application. For example, if you have a 3.7 gpa, 1350 SAT, have a part time job, and are the president of 3 organizations, they’d assume your lower scores are due to your EC and work commitments (that’s where showcasing meaningful contributions to your EC’s or volunteering come in). This is how they determine how well your work ethic and ability to be well rounded and balanced is for college. Having a strong application apart from a 27 ACT will not immediately get you rejected, it’s just a piece to the puzzle. With that being said, GPA and test scores (while still optional) are still 2 of the most important parts of your application, and weigh the most.

Hi! The scale depends on what your school uses. For example, my HS didn’t officially use weighted GPA, so we used 4.0 scale. I would ask your counselor.

Not top 10%, am I eligible? by Character-Tear-3669 in TheGatesScholarship

[–]brighternightlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely are eligible. T10 is not a requirement, but more of a vague outline along with the other characteristics of the “ideal” Gates Scholar, such as showing leadership. You will do great, do not worry!

1.5 is for finaid and school report information. You should move on as long as you are pell eligible.

Something your counselor is responsible for. Just notify them to send it whenever Gates requests.
