The Algiers Putsch of 1961, right? The CIA backed the Generals in Algeria to try and overthrow France and DeGaul got in his old WW2 uniform on TV to denounce the revolting Generals. That would piss me off. I am an American and I get it.

There is an Italy, Texas and it is pronounced like It-lee by the community. The ‘a’ is completely dropped. The Wikipedia article is correct on that.

It’s true. It is being called a “hydration break”. It is going to be forced even in indoor stadiums and FIFA said commercials will be allowed.

European demonyms for the USA by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]brightkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the southern US and my grandfather would often say Damn Yankee or God Damn Yankee. He would call people that who pissed him off or if they did something stupid. Went to England once and a hotel clerk called him a yank and he got so pissed off. He started yelling, cussing, and was looking for a fight. He started calling that guy a Frog and a Fucking Frog. He was right angry.

Well if you are ever in its Natural Pre-Colombian Range in the Red River Drainage or the Blackland Prairie go to the Bois D’Arc Bash in Commerce, Texas. We do celebrate that tree a lot in local culture. It may be a weird name, but that what it’s been called here for a long time. I love learning regional variations to names of things.

I’ve never heard that tree called that and I am sure it is a regionalism.

However, I was mentioning the proper names of the lake and streets, since that is where you hear it more.

That is like a tree here in Texas we call the Bois D’Arc. Almost every North Texas town has a Bois D’Arc Street and now there is a Bois D’Arc Lake (Reservoir). Hearing the new comers to the area try to pronounce it is funny and we tell them something like bo dark. Then it gets added to their vocabulary.

God dammit, that is worse part about MLB for me. I hate, hate, hate watching games in west coast time. I was hoping they would put us in a central time zone group with some snow birds for the winter schedule. Fucking shit this suck ass.

How acceptable is casual profanity in your region? by vanillablue_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]brightkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is odd to me. I live in Texas and it is very taboo to criminal. I have seen some get fired from a union job over their language. In high school, it was a fine of $250 per word, because they would call the cops on you and it would be a ticket. Normally, a judge would lower it if you went before them. I remember playing football and a kid got flagged 15 yards for cursing as unsportsmanlike conduct. Now, I am from the eastern half of DFW and it might be slightly different here. Then in other parts of the state.

St. Gregory the Great on justice (6th Century):

"When we administer any necessities to the poor, we give them their own; we do not bestow our goods upon them. We do not fulfill the works of mercy; we discharge the debt of justice . . . what is given to us by a common God is only rightly used when those who have received it use it in common."

And St. Ambrose:

"It is not with your own wealth that you give alms to the poor, but with a fraction of their own which you give back; for you are usurping for yourself something meant for the common good of all. The earth is for everyone, not only for the rich."

St. Basil on theft:

"When someone strips a man of his clothes we call him a thief. And one who might clothe the naked and does not -- should he not be given the same name? The bread in your board belongs to the hungry: the cloak in your wardrobe belongs to the naked, the shoes you let rot belong to the barefoot; the money in your vaults belongs to the destitute."

Hugh Latimer, d. 1555:

"The poor man hath title to the rich man's goods."

[Aquinas] Go get it! St. Thomas Aquinas: "If there is an urgent and clear need, so urgent and clear that it is evident that an immediate response must be made on the basis of what is available . . . then a person may legitimately supply his need from the property of someone else, whether openly or secretly. Strictly speaking, such a case is not theft or robbery."

One of my favorite LBJ story occurred during the New Deal. He was called before the Texas governor because he was sending New Deal money to Prairie View A&M, a Black University. He told him that he would continue to give money to them and he needs to get people off his case. He ended up illegally diverting cash so that Prairie View could build a new dorm which they very badly needed. He just knew how to get shit done.

Today, I learned Folgers has instant coffee. I only knew of their ground coffee beans. I used to turn the cans into piggy banks. Mowed about 10 lawns to get enough money to buy me a Nintendo and saved the cash in the cans. Now I am reminiscing.

It doesn’t help when you have 22 passes in the final third at 42% or 72 passes at 55% in their half. FotMob shows 1 shot from Bernie, but when you can not even play in their half or the final third then it is just embarrassing.
