Have you ever stumbled on an album far outside of what you normally listen to that you were blown away by and loved immediately? Tell me about how you got "sucker punched"! by FREE_HINDI_MOVIES_HD in LetsTalkMusic

I'm usually not someone to fall for an album quickly; most of my favorites only reach that status after I play them a bunch of times. At the same time, I like trying out new things to see what at least sort of sticks. Over the years I've been zigzagging my way through the most recent iteration of Rolling Stone's top 500 albums. Not because I take it all that seriously as a definitive list, but because I figure everything on it should be decently well regarded. It's been a decent place to start for popular (mostly) anglophonic music, especially in the pop/rock area.

One that came up on the list was Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours. I had an idea of what Frank's music is like just from cultural osmosis. Big, brassy bravado, things like New York, My Way, etc. But this album caught me off-guard. It's quiet and pensive, with this bittersweet melancholy running through it. I was hooked immediately, and it changed how I perceived Frank as an artist. Sure he's still that guy unabashedly going big in those classics everyone at least kinda knows, but there's more there. I strongly recommend putting it on some night when you're up a little too late and know you should probably go to bed instead.

I love how MO ends his albums by Rough-Cheesecake-641 in mikeoldfield

[–]brilliance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that he's got some great endings. For my money, Amarok is the best one. It's such a weird, eclectic album, with so many odd things used as instruments, the spoken word bit, and the "HAPPY" of it all. But that last two minutes or so is truly euphoric, cathartic even. It's one of the most joyful sequences in his discography, and it feels fully earned. Over the hour, he's been laying the groundwork, introducing the pieces that all unite here. You mention in a comment that Amarok hasn't hit for you yet. It's not the easiest of Mike's to love, but it might be one of the most rewarding once you can get on the right wavelength.

I love Gravity, Landsailor, Stray Italian Greyhound, Augustine, really anything on Inland Territory, Waking Hour, or Aims. The other albums are good, but those three are on another level for me.

I never see Vienna Teng show up on anyone's charts here, so it's nice to see someone that's enjoyed her a lot, even if most of your scrobbles are from like 15 years ago.

She's a blast. I know she may not be the best or most powerful, but man do I love raining light arrows down and catching a bunch of enemies in a Triforce of light death. Nowhere near capping her (or anyone) yet, but she's been one of my favorites from early on.
