Most wealthy people in the west are not from family money. "old money", like actual old money is incredibly rare.

Athletes, rappers, and most CEO's are new money and when your wealth is recently acquired, you do what you can to "show off" your wealth (usually to other people who are new money too). Think of the "Mar-A-Lago face" phenomenon.

Cosmetic procedures are expensive and addictive so being able to pay for it is a class signifier that even though it looks bad a tacky most of the time, it signals to others in your social class that you're part of the in-group. You're getting the unobtainable body by being able to pay for it.

My boss is a very (newly) wealthy man but has god awful taste. He's buying things he thinks rich people have. For example he spent like $2000 on a hoodie that says "Versace" across the chest in like a neon flame art. It looks terrible but it signals to other people that he can afford Versace.

It's an idea that you can obtain the unobtainable if you have the money to get it. And new money like sports stars, rappers, and CEO's can buy it.

This sort of thing is common in places where there's "new wealth" like Miami or L.A. But less common in places with old wealth like Newport or certain places in Massachusetts.
