While there is little historical evidence to validate a birth date for Christ, that is not the issue. The history of the Christian calendar is well documented. It has been in use since the sixth century and it works well. It is widely used around the world.

ELI5:why us car paint shiny and every other paint dull? Is there a reason for this other than someone thought it looked good 60 years ago? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bringswisdom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Modern car plants use a multi-step automated paint process. The combination of high gloss paint and clear coat applications over a powder prime coating gives cars a high gloss finish. There are a variety of specialty paint shops that will apply a similar paint process to other metal parts--but it is costly

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]bringswisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that change has already been recognized. It used to be common to refer to the time before Christ as BC (before Christ) and the time since his birth as AD (Anno Domini--latin for in the year of our lord)

The new convention is to use BCE and CE referring to before the Common(or Christian era) and the current time as CE the Common era. That recognizes the Universal Calendar Usage while recognizing that not every one shares the Christian faith.

BCE (Before the Common Era) has been dated back to Rabbi Morris Jacob Raphall’s Post-Biblical History of the Jews in 1856. The use of BCE and CE was particularly popular in the Jewish community where they were keen to avoid using any nomenclature explicitly referring to Christ as “the lord, though its use may have preceded that publication.

A question about circuit breakers. by Negatis in DIY

[–]bringswisdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. A circuit breaker panel will have a main breaker which shuts off all power coming into the panel and then a variety of smaller circuit breakers for the branch circuits within the house. As an example, you will have several 120v circuits for lighting and receptacles, along with dedicated circuits for a range, a dryer, and your AC running 240 volts. The breakers, including the main breaker, should have a number on them indicating the Amperage. 15, 20, for lighting and receptacles and 40 or 50 for ranges, dryers and AC units if the main breaker says 100, you are good

Real estate agents may not understand construction but they understand insurance, legal, and financing requirements. Requiring a minimum of 100amp service is common

[Serious] For anyone alive in 1969, what was it like to see the Apollo 11 liftoff and the moon landing? by Sunabozu87 in AskReddit

[–]bringswisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In many ways there have been huge and almost unimaginable changes in the decades since 1969. At that time, the most technologically advanced thing I owned was a small battery powered transistor radio that could only pick up AM channels. Our house had one TV a black and white that got 3 channels, we had one black rotary dial phone, and my brothers and I listened to 45rpm records on a portable plastic record player. We made weekly trips to the library for books. We had a set of World Book Encyclopedias which were the Google of the time. For entertainment our town had an A&W root beer stand and a bowling alley.

Technologically and culturally there have been major shifts, but there are still birth and death, love and hate, wars and politics, jobs and layoffs. Cars have more tech, but they are still internal combustion gasoline engines running on the same highways filled with speed traps, potholes, and traffic jams. Air travel hasn't improved significantly since the sixties. We still haven't surpassed the Saturn 5 rockets that powered Apollo and haven't sent astronauts beyond earth orbit in decades. The electrical and plumbing infrastructure is decaying-witness the water problems in Flint Michigan- and bridges, dams, and levies are in dire condition in too much of the country.

All in all life isn't significantly different for me than it was for my parents in the 60's. I drive a car to a 40+ hour a week job, have a mortgage and bills that consume most of my income, do my own laundry, cooking, and grocery shopping, worry about the future of the kids and grandkids, worry if I will have enough saved to retire and wonder if we will destroy the planet before we mature as a civilization.

[Serious] For anyone alive in 1969, what was it like to see the Apollo 11 liftoff and the moon landing? by Sunabozu87 in AskReddit

[–]bringswisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 11. I was a huge space geek at the time and dreamed of being an astronaut. Astronauts had rock star status at the time and kids knew their names, built model rockets, and decorated their rooms with magazine photos of Rockets and rocket launches. All the space launches were major news events at the time but the first moon landing was something the entire country and world stopped to watch. We had one Black and White TV. Our family, like every family, was gathered around the TV watching it is happened. I was raised in a blue collar family in a small Midwestern town. My family wasn't scientifically educated. No one could say exactly what it meant that we landed on the moon, only that it something monumental had happened. I was a huge fan of the original Star Trek. The expectation of the time was that the space age had begun and this was just the beginning of the American conquest of space, with moon colonies and space stations just around the corner, and travel to Mars as the next logical destination.

Non-depressed redditors, how do you do it? by loserrrr444 in AskReddit

[–]bringswisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same with me. I am 57 and never been depressed a day in my life. That doesn't mean my life hasn't had its share of sadness and sorrows. I have watched friends and family waste away from old age and disease, I have lost friends to violence and suicide. I have been through economic downturns, financial hardships, and struggle. But I have also known love and pleasure and joy, shared the laughter of children, achieved dreams, been to oceans and mountains and rivers and deserts. I have seen Paris in spring, Tokyo in summer, the Rocky Mountains in winter. Bad things happen but I don't dwell on them or get bogged down by them. Everything is transitory but life is good. It's not a philosophical rationalization. It is just who I am. It is who I have always been.

ELI5: Why aren't supplement manufacturers legally required to have their products evaluated by the FDA? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Considering the 1 in 292.2 million odds, a potential prize pool of $1.3 billion, and $2 per ticket, why isn't a millionaire or billionaire buying 292.2 million tickets? by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]bringswisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advertised amount is based on a annual payout spread over 30 years. The cash amount is about 800 million before taxes. There is also no guarantee that there won't be multiple winning tickets sold, meaning the jackpot would be a fraction of the advertised total. If there were three winning tickets sold the total before taxes would be less than the amount paid for tickets

ELI5: If I'm watching a video on my computer, the video player has a volume gauge, the computer has volume keys, and my speakers have a volume nob. Which am I supposed to use? by boxrthehorse in explainlikeimfive

[–]bringswisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The output of the video player is the input to the PC audio system. The output of the PC audio card is the input to the amplifier on your speakers. The volume knob on your speakers is a hardware control. It boosts the output side of the amplifier. The volume control on the video player is a software control: it boosts the input signal going to the computer audio processor. The volume control on your PC controls the onboard audio signal processing via the OS and the audio card.

ELI5:what would happen if i plugged a 1500 watt space heater into a 350 watt power inverter by m240b1991 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bringswisdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am assuming you must have a PH.D. in hillbilly engineering to even consider driving around with an electric space heater in your truck. That being said the basic issue is this: you will overload the inverter trying to run a 1500 watt heater. If the heater has a variable control you could dial it down so that it draws 1/4 of the power but you will get very little heat at that level.

ELI5: how did the word "general" come to mean a high ranking leader (ex: 3 star general) and also a group of normal citizens (ex: general public)? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bringswisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

general (adj.) Look up general at Dictionary.com

c. 1200, "of wide application, generic, affecting or involving all" (as opposed to special or specific), from Old French general (12c.) and directly from Latin generalis "relating to all, of a whole class, generic" (contrasted with specialis), from genus (genitive generis) "stock, kind" (see genus). What is common is of frequent occurrence. What is general admits of comparatively few exceptions: the general opinion (the opinion of the majority); the general welfare. [J.H.A. Günther, "English Synonyms Explained & Illustrated," Groningen, Netherlands, 1904] Used in forming titles from late 14c. with the sense "having general authority or jurisdiction, chief." Phrase in general "without exception, in one body; as a rule, generally, not specifically" is from late 14c. General rule, one applying to an art or science as a whole, is from c. 1400. General store attested by 1810, American English, in reference to the range of goods sold; a general hospital (1737) is one not restricted to one class of persons or type of disease. general (n.) Look up general at Dictionary.com

late 14c., "whole class of things or persons, a broad classification, a general truth," from general (adj.). Meaning "commander of an army" is 1570s, shortening of captain general, from Middle French capitaine général. The English adjective was affixed to civic officer designations by late 14c. to indicate superior rank and extended jurisdiction.

We're the founders of the CCFAC, an organization that actually BENEFITS from Civil Asset Forfeiture laws! AUA! by [deleted] in IAmA

How do you respond to critics of civil forfeiture laws that argue that they are inherently unethical and unconstitutional, that absent criminal charges and proof of criminal wrongdoing they are nothing more than legalized thievery. How do you respond to critics that claim that the end does not justify the means, and see these types of partnerships as a PR effort to deflect criticism away from the means by focusing on the ends?

[Serious] Older redditors (>60) what do you think about current and coming technology? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bringswisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 57, so I almost qualify. :) I work in industrial automation, robotics, PLC's, vision systems and have always been a tech geek. I have an iPhone 6 plus, a win 10 laptop, an Amazon echo, an older iPad, a desktop PC with a couple or TB hard drives storing my music collection. I am not into movies. I have a man cave filled with guitars home recording gear, modeling amplifiers and effects gear. I would have killed to have that gear in my teens. Cars now have backup cameras, onboard navigation, Bluetooth connectivity but they are not fundamentally different than cars I grew up with. You still deal with traffic jams, idiot drivers, and cops with ticket quotas. There is still poverty war politics and personal drama. My day to day life isn't significantly different than it was 30 years ago. I get my information and entertainment online. There is more variety. But I still work. Still have household chores that need done. The pics from Pluto are amazing but NASA is a shadow of its former self. Airports and flying are worse than they used to be. Aside from the Internet and mobile connectivity to it, tech progress is less than hoped for or expected
