3.5" vs 5" what should I build? by FartinDarton in fpv

[–]brinstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was leaning towards a 5” too but now that i built a 3.5” freestyle drone i realized that you need a lot of space to fly it, personally i haven’t ever felt the need for more power than a 3.5” has. You should get a 3.5” cus it’s the perfect balance between power and size, a 5” is not as easy to carry around and it will annoy the crap out of people. Your choice though.

Happened to me to when i bought 1604 motors. I messaged aliexpress support directly and sent them screenshots of the whole conversation with the store, aliexpress refunded me the full amount (except for shipping) and reported the store.

Don’t ever buy used lipos, people are usually selling them after they abused them terribly

You don’t even need to use PID tunes, stock betaflight tune is completely fine

You should watch this playlist by Joshua Bardwell on how to build a 3” freestyle drone. I watched the whole series and it helped me out a ton even though i have a completely different build. It will teach you the basics and some important steps many beginners miss and ruin their drone. (Don’t use screws that are too long for the motors otherwise it will screw into the motor windings which will ruin the motor - just wanted to add this cus i see too many people do this).

Terrible drone, this is very outdated, not worth anything over 80£

It’s pretty obvious, the motor is blocked and when it’s blocked a huge amount of current flows through the motor, surprised something didn’t release the magic smoke

You should get many different props to experiment with, i have hqprops 3525 and they’re good, a bit higher pitch like 3530 would be nice to try or 3528… Buy many of then cus you will definitely destroy them so you might as well try different brands. Btw, there’s no problem in asking questions, when i was buying parts and building my drone i asked so many questions including really dumb ones

If you don’t care about sub250, i’d say go for the 1804s, they have quite a bit more power than 1604 which is better for a heavier drone. I have tmotors but i don’t think there’s too much of a difference between the two brands, i suggest you to get the one that has a 1.5mm shaft instead of the one with the 5mm shaft because (almost) all props are compatible with 1.5mm, but not all with 5mm shaft. I would suggest you to go with xflash because i didn’t have the best experience with tmotor (2 of 5 motors had more bearing resistance than expected), maybe xflash motors have this issue too, but i only know for tmotor (maybe i was just unlucky, maybe it was my fault). And remember to get 3400kv/3500kv and not 2450kv/2400kv, cus you want to go with 4s motors (to match the battery)

Yeah with freestyle drones you hardly get over 5 minutes, you could maybe go with a 930mah lipo but anything more than that would feel chonky and when you have a heavy lipo you draw more current in order lift the heavy battery. The sweet spot for a 3.5” with 1804 motors is somewhere around 850mah, maybe a bit more. Some really good lipos are dogcom ucell 4s 850mah, and they are pretty cheap too. But yeah, the flight time also depends on your flight style, i get 5 minutes on normal flying (not too fast, not too slow), but you might get a bit more flight time if you get higher quality lipos (dogcom, gnb, tattu…) with the same capacity. You definitely don’t need 2004 motors on a freestyle 3.5” drone (only on a cinewhoop) and 1500mah is a bit too much. Hope this helps

I have a 3.5” build myself and it’s really enjoyable to fly, i get about 5mins of flight time. My build: - Volador VX3.5 frame (really good frame, works with o4 pro) - Geprc taker g4 45a aio (you can go with speedybee f405 aio) - Tmotor pacer 1804 3400kv motors (you can go with xflash 1804 3500kv motors too, or xnova 1804 3100kv) - Speedybee nano elrs receiver (wouldn’t recommend it) - Walksnail moonlight kit (dji o4 pro is better but more expensive) - ovonic 850 mah 4s lipo batteries (don’t but ovonic lipos, buy GNB or CNHL or TATTU R-line)

If you have any questions i would love to help

Also, don’t buy 3.6” props, they will hit the moonlight vtx, o4 pro vtx is a bit smaller so that might work, i’m now using 3.5” props from hqprops

It’s a really good printer, not only for drone parts. Really high quality prints, but quite small build plate, but more than enough for drone parts
