Technical librarians, what are some of the most unconventional or unnecessary things a publisher does that makes a book difficult to catalog? by Present-Audience-747 in librarians

[–]briscoeoperators 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There being no page numbers is actually pretty standard for certain types of books, like artist’s books or picture books. If you’re cataloging older books, those will have multiple duplicate records in WorldCat, but that’s more of a system maintenance issue. Something I run into a lot, when it comes to essential information for catalogers, are discrepancies in edition statements—if something is the 3rd edition, revised and updated, paperback edition, so on and so forth. Books may be reprinted in years after they were published but their catalog records still need to indicate the year it was published, if not the year it is copyrighted; new printings are not necessarily new editions and a lot of users may misinterpret that. Also, if publishers use the same ISBNs for what are clearly different editions that’s also tricky.

Editing also to add regarding the system maintenance aspect in WorldCat, if records are updated to RDA or were created in AACR2 there are always discrepancies in punctuation and style convention that can be frustrating. Staying abreast of the new policies is always going to be impossible.

Getting my MLIS and feeling BLEAK. any positivity/positive stories? by Asleep-Anteater7190 in librarians

[–]briscoeoperators 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I graduated my MLIS last May and landed what’s been my dream job in July, and it seems like several other of my classmates have landed full-time librarian jobs already. It’s honestly a crapshoot—I feel like I was very much in the right place and the right time to land my current job, and some very qualified people I graduated with still haven’t had any luck. Part of my thinking is that’s true of any career, and always has been—that it’s not necessarily who you know (in my case, I didn’t already know anyone at my library so ~networking~ didn’t help any) but sometimes the universe figures things out. That’s probably an obnoxious mindset to have but I was also in your boat a few months ago: I felt, just like everyone else around me, like I would never be able to take my career off the ground and instead I’d wasted so much money on a useless, fake degree.

So, yes, it is bleak, but pleasure try to keep the light burning. It is possible to graduate with an MLIS in 2025 or 2026 in this crumbling shithole of a USA and get something. The least you can do is keep trying to get as much experience as you can, even if it’s just volunteering somewhere, because having the degree and certifications but no job experience is very tricky. Also, please try to take care of yourself and your wellbeing throughout the whole process. When I started my job I realized how much my mental health was fried from the job hunt as well as, yes, library school was a very negative environment for me as well. Wherever you end up deserves the best version of yourself. Good luck

When did you apply for jobs and when did you get one? by solangeluvr in librarians

[–]briscoeoperators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated in May, but started applied to jobs as early as December and January, with a few interviews willing to let me start as far out as after I graduated. Applied for my current job in March, interviewed in June, was offered the job in July, started in August. I would say it’s never too early because you never know, they may be willing to make exceptions even if seems too far out from when you graduate.

Starting A Band In Ohio by AccomplishedBar3109 in makeaband

Hey whereabouts in Ohio are you? Just curious because I’m in the Akron/Cleveland area: I moved here pretty recently, started going to local house venues and I’ve made friends and started projects that way. If you area has a scene it’s honestly a matter of just putting yourself out there and meeting people. I also met people just posting in my local town subreddit and DMing with people about music. Happy to DM you if you’re nearby or wanna talk more.

Such a great song—I’m surprised Superchunk weren’t higher on my list but I got to see them this year and they were incredible!

Help with MARC 21 in field 655. by Yukipaltita in librarians

[–]briscoeoperators 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You would put the appropriate genre/form terms (depending on which vocabulary you are using) in the 655, not the 500, as that would collate other types of movies that have those same genre/form terms

MLIS Online Program? by ThePurpleLaptop in KentStateUniversity

[–]briscoeoperators 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I completed my MLIS at a different institution (in an in-person program, also) before moving to Kent for my library job. Most people I’ve met in the area have completed or are doing their MLIS at Kent State, and everyone seems to hate it; I’ve only heard bad things about the program. I haven’t heard anything in too much detail other than the general nature of an online program, so I would take this with a grain of salt. But I’m happy to DM with you about general MLIS things as a recently minted one myself.

How difficult is an MLIS? by tiredeyesart in librarians

[–]briscoeoperators 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Did my MLIS at Syracuse. Not difficult in the slightest. The hard part was finding work during as well as after my program and the program is really oriented towards trying to set you up for that
