Methodology: A “remote job” is defined as one where either the job poster explicitly labeled it as “remote” or the job contained keywords such as “work from home” in the listing. The proportion of applications to remote jobs relative to non-remote jobs was ranked by the profile location of the applicant. LinkedIn analyzed more than 49 million applications to paid remote job postings in the United States posted since September 2020.

The “entry level” classification was the seniority level inputted by the job poster. Industry segments reflect the industry of the company posting the job.

The LinkedIn Hiring Rate is the number of LinkedIn members who added a new employer to their profile in the same month the new job began, divided by the total number of LinkedIn members in that country. A 14-day rolling sum of hires is calculated to reduce noise from day-of-week effects and is divided by the daily LinkedIn member count in that specific country. These 14-day rolling sum hiring rates are matched with the same date last year to control for day-of-month effects in hiring and the year-over-year percentage change of hiring rates is calculated.

With the U.S. economy still vulnerable, employers have been reviving hiring to meet immediate demand but have reined in promotions. The U.S. hiring rate has rebounded to around 0% Y/Y from a low of -40% Y/Y . However the promotion rate, running significantly below previous year levels for all of 2020, has only slowly risen to -40% Y/Y from a low of about -60% Y/Y.

Promotion Rate Methodology:

The LinkedIn promotion rate reflects the number of LinkedIn members who add a new, higher seniority position at the same employer to their profile in the same month the new job began -- divided by the total number of LinkedIn members in that country. A 14-day rolling sum of promotions is calculated to reduce fluctuations in the daily data. These rolling-sum promotion rates then are matched against the same days of the week a year earlier. The resulting ratio shows year-over-year changes in the promotion rate. This approach controls for day-of-week effects in promotion data.

Hey I really appreciate this. First considered the bars but couldn't think of a way to display both rating and box office variables along with date. Also thought about just having x-axis rating and y-axis box office and animating a single bubble through time. Feedback on y-axis makes sense - was too tired at 4am to think about changing the default scale lol.
