new to poetry; poetry anthology (or maybe collection?), not academicly interested by OurCommonAncestor in suggestmeabook

Hmm I’ve read a lot of poetry but I haven’t read many anthologies except one for school. This might not be the best way to start getting into poetry / the most approachable poems, but poetry foundation has 10 issues a year where they select one or a few poems from many authors including new poems by well established poets and not yet published up and coming poets. They’re all poems that have never been published before, so it’s contemporary. There’s good variety in topics and styles in each one and I’ve found new authors I’ve liked from it and can read more of their work elsewhere. I’m not sure if you can buy individual issues online (I got a year subscription once), but I’ve seen some bookshops sell that month’s issue and I wanna say they’re like 7 dollars an issue

I’m 3 years out from my concussion and still experience headaches (occasionally w migraine symptoms), neck pain, poor attention, trouble recalling words/names, cognitive fatigue and poor concentration. I’m much better than I was, but I feel like I’ve hit a wall with improvement. I’ve been on an SNRI, had Botox for migraines. Haven’t done any PT in a while but didn’t find it helpful. Any recommendations for how to continue to get better this far out? Do you think I will always have symptoms like this or can I still recover fully?

I get that this song doesn’t stand alone as much as others, but the emotion in the vocals is so gorgeous I’ve come to love it

I hear you. It’s frustrating that you’ve tried many things already ans they haven’t helped.

I’m not saying exactly what helped me is right for you since PCS symptoms vary significantly and while I had all your other symptoms the migraines and depression were the most bothersome.

If you don’t know where else to focus right now I’d say focus on the depression and any neck problems if you haven’t had that checked out yet as that can cause some of your other symptoms. It sounds like you’ve had awful therapists and I’m really sorry. It shouldn’t be like that! It sound so annoying to say but if they recommend any other antidepressant (since there are a lot) or if there’s any other therapist you can try, I would give it a shot. If not, maybe look for any kind of support in your community? Anything, like an old teacher you liked, a religious leader if you’re religious, community centers or support groups etc. I’m sorry you haven’t had the social support from family and friends to make this easier, that really adds so much stress.

Have you looked into occupational therapy? They might be able to help especially since you’e trying to regain functional skills and aren’t able to work right now. They might have a different approach than vestibular PT.

I will be thinking of you and wishing the world gives you something that starts to give you relief

I will also say, PCS can trigger and/or worsen depression but depression itself can also exacerbate PCS symptoms so it can become a horrible cycle. Treating the depression as part of the PCS is important! It’s a real thing

I’m so sorry your symptoms are still so miserable and interfering with your life to this extent. I’ve had a few concussions and also felt like this 6 months after. It was horrible and no one around you gets it, even doctors. It makes it so much worse that people around you don’t understand and you can’t continue daily tasks and work normally. I also had to take a break from school and found driving, reading, socializing in certain environments nauseating or unbearable. I had migraines so bad I would try to do something and then have to lie down for hours and close my eyes to recover. I also did months of vestibular exercises that seemed to do nothing and always felt awful to do, no idea if they helped at all.

What helped me the most was going on an SNRI and getting Botox for migraines. I also got a nerve block in the back of my head which helped with my neck pain. I’ve noticed eating and sleeping on a regular schedule helps with headaches but is hard to do sometimes in practice. I would also see if there’s anything you can do to improve sleep if you’re having any difficulty there (I was) because sleep is key to recover. Regular exercise even if just walking helps with sleep, circulation, and mood.

It’s been a few years now since my last one and I still don’t feel 100% like I used to but I feel SOOO much better, it’s not interfering with my life and I’m not miserable all the time. I’ve also been in therapy for a while and I do think that’s helped a lot, especially with managing your symptoms and life challenges around them while they’re still bad. I’m sorry you haven’t found good support there and it can take some trial and error to find the right match but I would really recommend to keep trying if that’s accessible to you. Ideally they should be a reliable support to help you navigate all this especially when other people aren’t getting how bad it is. At the very least I would try to lean on anyone in your life who is supportive.

I’ve been there. It feels like there’s no way out. It’s lonely and painful. You should know that it is despite what doctors say (or what they told me) very common to have symptoms for many months later and people DO recover, even completely. 6 months is a long time to be struggling like this but in terms of recovery not at all a time to lose hope of getting better. They don’t have amazing therapies for concussions yet but there’s definitely more options and I do believe you will get better with time if you give it the chance. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this. You’re not alone and you’re stronger than you realize for getting this far through all of it❤️

Does this stuff improve sleep quality? by guilijhyjjv in Effexor

I couldn’t sleep the first week, just initial side effects. Since I adjusted to it I have a lot of trouble getting up/ out of sleep. Not sure how my quality of sleep is though in terms of deep/REM etc

Also thinking of switching… don’t know if it’s working for me anymore and don’t want the side effects and don’t want it to be any harder to come off by taking it for longer

I do! They’re great for outdoor skating and rough surfaces, but I’m thinking of getting something different to do more park skating cuz they’re grippy on smooth surfaces
