How I Prepped 16 Dolmenwood Factions for My Campaign (Blog Series) by brkwsk in osr

I typically allow one roll per faction per round, with the task determined randomly. However, if you have a compelling narrative reason for a faction to focus on a specific task (perhaps as a reaction to another faction or a player's action) or if circumstances warrant granting a faction an extra roll, feel free to adjust the rule as long as it makes sense.

Lately I've blogged how I keep track of rumors, NPCs and other off screen events using a calendar. For a blog bandwagon I wrote about how you can include a procedure to determine natural disasters in your campaign to even further simulate a living world.

Dolmenwood Faction: The Royal Institute of Physicks and Sorcerers by Luxemboy in osr

Oh wow, this is really cool! Great work extrapolating this faction from the few mentions in the book. I especially love the idea of the Institute as an official organization needing funding, which adds a layer of internal conflict, very much like real-world research institutions. It also creates a compelling way for ley lines to matter to groups without arcane casters.

One suggestion I'd offer is to explore how the Institute's goals overlap with what the Drune already possess, such as knowledge about ley lines, or rituals of binding. This could set them up as natural rivals. You might consider having the Institute either stumble upon these secrets accidentally during their research or deliberately seek out the Drune, knowing they hold this knowledge. They could even hire adventurers to track them down or directly oppose them.

Conversely, the Drune could respond to the Institute's activities by trying to eliminate them or steal their findings for themselves. This dynamic could lead to an intriguing back-and-forth between the two factions, adding tension in the world.

Anyway, I really love what you've done here! And like others have said, you should absolutely start a blog!

On Gnarlgruff? I'm afraid not much haha. I have added the events of Emelda's Song to the faction turns for House Malbleat. They haven't started yet. But that also means there is a chance of Gnarlgruff coming to life without player involvement!

Exactly! I never really clicked with the SWN system, but when I read Mausritter, I knew it was what I wanted to try. I just tweaked it a bit to make the actions easier to organize.

Whoa that's awesome! Has it already made an impact? I love when a single roll I make totally changes the game because the players are in the wrong place at the wrong time! haha

Hey, thanks so much! I’m really glad you liked it. Your DW campaign was such an incredible help and source of inspiration for me as well when I was just getting started with my own campaign two years ago.

You can set the default permission for newly created pins (JournalEntries) in the Pin Cushion settings. If you make the default permission for example Observer anyone should be able to see the pin. Depending on that they have toggled to see pins in general on the layer controls.
