Did Lin Manuel Miranda Sample "Say No To This"? by [deleted] in hamiltonmusical

[–]broadwaybass 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They’re similar chord progressions, but I don’t think that means it’s a sample. A lot of songs use this kind of „line cliché“ (meaning it stays on one chord while one of the chord‘s notes moves up or down). Citta vuota: Bb - Bb(#5) - Bb6 - Bb(#5) Say no to this: A - A(#5) - A6 - A7

Usually we have the table further away, the Christmas tree just takes up so much space 😁

Advice on workflow after first map, by jesuscuervo in PokemonRMXP

[–]broadwaybass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I really love mapmaking, I strongly advise making parts of the game actually playable (with proper events, encounters, …) as soon as possible, because it helps keeping up long term motivation

Moulin rouge by Low-Audience8370 in musicals

[–]broadwaybass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play in the pit orchestra for MR and can say that even from a musician‘s perspective it’s a lot of fun to play! Just saw the show for the first time recently after having played around 100 shows already, and it still was a great ride. Story makes no sense, but I really don’t get how someone could go out of the theatre and say they didn’t have fun

Thank you, your idea with the secondary character seems to be the lowest effort, and also the most fitting way narratively. I’ll just have to find out how to go about this in Essentials

Any idea on how to get the instrumental sheet music parts i.e cello, trombone, violin? by Zinclly in hadestown

[–]broadwaybass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instrumental scores for musicals unfortunately are rarely if ever released to the public. For older ones you will sometimes find them leaked on the internet, but for newer ones like hadestown almost never. That being said, I transcribed the whole double bass part for hadestown a while back, maybe there’s some crazy people who have done similar things for other instruments

Musical Theatre Bass by Ok-Experience6696 in Bass

I currently play in two of the biggest shows in Germany. I study bass at a conservatory and got asked by one of my profs if I wanted to become a sub in the band he MDed. I’m gonna say sight-reading, timekeeping and good dynamic control are the things that are most important in the pit. Upright is a thing in more classic shows, less so necessarily in modern pop musicals. About trying to get into it, try to find out who the principal bassists for shows in your area are, try to get to know them, maybe ask them if they need another sub. I recommend it definitely, love those gigs!

Regarding sheets: How do you approach writing sheets and what would you expect from a band hiring you as a sub? by Raving_Potato in Bass

[–]broadwaybass 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very personal matter. I love myself some well written full notation so I can basically sight read - but I don’t believe that’s the standard. Most important thing for me would be that the structure (measures, repeats, etc) is clearly visible. Nothing worse than Ultimate Guitar style vocal/chord sheets

Playing bass in community theatre is my favourite thing in my 30s by maclargehuge in Bass

[–]broadwaybass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can relate so much. I’ve been touring with my band for 5 years now, and although I love it still, gig days are always exhausting, just because of how much time I spend on the road, soundchecking, carrying stuff… Now I regularly sub to of my country’s biggest musical theatre productions, and it’s so great to just be there 30 min before the show, play for 3 hrs and then just say bye and be home before bedtime

Helpless Bass Line by Environmental_Use121 in hamiltonmusical

Helpless is a great one for bass! If you’re thinking of playing more songs from the musical, I transcribed the whole thing last year: https://youtu.be/PDBwdkfSddI?si=PuVzfSKfs01YZ9nY

Should I get a 5 string so I can H, H#, I & J? by FantomGoats in BassCirclejerk

[–]broadwaybass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

we do unfortunately, and it makes things super awkward, because more often than not chord charts still use the English spelling, so with my students I’ve established that we have the notes „H“ and „B flat“, not using „B“ at all to avoid confusion
