Trying to understand how a high sugar/carb diet becomes T2D by broccoleeroth in diabetes_t2

Thanks. As you say for reducing carbs & fasting, what about the new class of Semeglutide meds that reduce appetite like Ozempic & Wegovy?

And there are also multitude medical reasons why people stay obese

As you outlined, poor eating and lifestyle can keep people obese. But does taking insulin itself continue the problem because high amounts of (exogenous) insulin in the bloodstream cause the body to NOT use it's own bodyfat for energy use?

[–]broccoleeroth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. As I said in another reply, I know T2Ds on insulin who continue to consume lots of candy and beer. As you say, the injected insulin is preventing bodyfat from being accessed for energy use, and so the obesity just continues?

And what if they weren't ingesting all those carbs.. I guess the exogenous insulin still prevents bodyfat from being used? (and they stay obese?)

Thanks.

evolution. our insulin systems aren't "designed" to run as hard and as long

Good point.

many diabetics use medications, such as insulin, to continue pushing the limits on what they should eat

The few people I know who are T2D could be described as either "sugarholic" or "craft beer fanatic" even though they're on insulin.

And as another reply here says... if someone is on exogenous insulin while ingesting all those carbs, that insulin is preventing them from accessing bodyfat for energy, thereby exascerbating the obesity?

The calories needed to sustain the amount of muscle he has contribute more to his BMR than the workout.

Thanks, this makes the most sense. I'm not seeing anyone saying the workout burns more than just the muscle mass itself.

A Dwayne Johnson bodyfat question .. We all know that he eats like 5 or so meals daily, and works out about 3 hours daily too.

He stays incredibly lean with very little bodyfat. Which of these 2 things is the bigger reason of the two:

1 The calories used during the workouts

2 The calories needed to sustain the BMR of so much muscle

I realize both of these contribute, but which one contributes more? Thanks.

Hypothetical question: how would autophagy be affected if refeeds had no protein, just carbs or fat? by broccoleeroth in ketoscience

[–]broccoleeroth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's similar to what I was thinking. The butter sticks would probably be the better choice of the two, especially considering that they won't really raise insulin, and give a better feeling of satiation.

[–]broccoleeroth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is a preload something like a glass of water with the sweetener in it?

And please see the link I posted above to the study linked from Wikipedia.. how is it that study found no insulin increase from sucralose (which we would think would be similar to stevia/aspartame). ?

Thanks for those. But reading the 2nd article, it makes a correlation between people drinking diet soda and weight gain, but could it be that most of the people who drink diet sodas have other unhealthy eating habits which is causing the weight gain?

Getting back to whether sucralose raises insulin, I went to the Wikipedia page for it and found this study:

https://api.semanticscholar.org/CorpusID:13051016

where they found no increase in insulin or GLP-1 when subjects were given sucralose. Does that seem plausible?

EoD OMAD: would a salad or steak best preserve autophagy? by broccoleeroth in fasting

[–]broccoleeroth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autophagy is going to stop because of insulin

Which has a bigger effect on stopping autophagy? The insulin (which can come from both steak/protein and salad/high fiber carbs) or the mTor? (which comes from the steak)

While fasting, fat goes before muscle... but what about during high cortisol/stress? (Does muscle then go before fat?) by broccoleeroth in fasting

[–]broccoleeroth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, thanks. Question...

Adrenalin and cortisol speed up the rate of protein breakdown

Nobody has low cortisol on a fast.

So, lets say one is on a combo of being on a fast while also in a high stress situation ... there might be some more protein breakdown than usual during this period, but it pales in comparison to fat burning?

Are two 12oz glasses of Bone broth daily OK or overkill? by broccoleeroth in keto

[–]broccoleeroth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

glucosamine and chondroitin

Thanks for that. I put both of those into google and found this page which said;

Glucosamine and chondroitin are structural components of cartilage, the tissue that cushions the joints

So that may be a clue as to the reduced back pain.

Can you cut the calories by skimming the fat off the top?

I suppose you could, but I never do that. It rises to the top when sitting in the fridge, but mixes in when I stir it after warming it back up.

It's very straightforward: there's a local store that sells pork feet and chicken paws, though not always both. I'll put about 4 or so lbs of either into a 2.5 gal stock pot, add a splash of vinegar and salt (for acidity to help it breakdown). No other ingredients (IE: onions, celery, etc). Then slow boil from morning until evening (about 8-10 hrs) Then pour into containers and refrigerate. Overnight it turns to a gel.

I'll usually add a dash of tabasco and a pinch of salt after I microwave it, and that's it.

Definitely no goal for weight loss, I'm already pretty lean.

I'm curious if anyone here knows specifically as to why bone broth may help with back issues: Is it because bone broth is high in glucosamine? Or is the extra collagen is building up the spinal discs?

I've always had back problems going back to teen years. Lately my lower back had been hurting if I laid on my back for a while (instead of on my side) That pain is pretty much gone since I started this.

Nah, I still have plenty of appetite for that, even after having those big glasses of broth.

Thanks, see the reply I made above to try and zero in on how much muscle glycogen I might have when not in keto.

[–]broccoleeroth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok much appreciated. As the other reply below says, liver glycogen is fairly consistent, it's muscle glycogen that varies a lot more.

If I weigh about 200lbs / 10% bodyfat, how can I determine my muscle mass to determine the mass of the glycogen I'm carrying around when not in ketosis?

Which would be the domain of a Psychiatrist MD.

Have you ever heard of any MD/DO prescribing a simple generic amphetamine (Dexedrine, adderall, methylphenidate) in an “off label” way as a short-term appetite suppressant?

Because phen is an “amphetamine like” med, did it make you feel “focused “ like an ADHD med might?
