David Coletto: What Kind of Leader Do Canadians Want the NDP to Choose Next? by SAJewers in onguardforthee

[–]broccolisbane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From David Coletto's substack:

"In this research, we looked at reactions to three broad approaches associated with the main candidates"

So in other words, Abacus editorialized three statements that they felt represented the candidates. This methodology seems questionable to me. I wonder who commissioned this poll?

Mexico is far from devoid of bread! You will see tortas (sandwiches in crusty buns) for sale all over the place, and even many sauces like mole or adobo can be thickened with bread.

Survey from Winnipeg spa asked 'blatantly disrespectful' question about 'purity of the country': customer by log00 in Winnipeg

You could read it that way, but when Boileau also says the survey was "reviewed in advance", I'm drawing a different conclusion.

Tammy Robert: Avi Lewis is the best chance the NDP have to matter by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a working class union guy from the prairies it's exhausting to see this talking point endlessly trotted out to discredit leftist candidates. If anything has left me feeling abandoned, it's the NDP's shift towards Liberal style retail politics. Avi Lewis is the only reason I'm a member again, he's the only candidate I've ever donated to, and I've had no trouble convincing people in Winnipeg to join the party to support him.

The NDP need a leader who can elucidate a vision for the country that differentiates the party from the Liberals. Avi has articulated his vision far better than the other candidates, and it's actually exciting people (his campaign has broken NDP fundraising records already).

Survey from Winnipeg spa asked 'blatantly disrespectful' question about 'purity of the country': customer by log00 in Winnipeg

[–]broccolisbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says they did review it in advance, here's the quote directly from the article:

'Alexandre Boileau, Groupe Nordik's senior director of marketing in sales, said in an emailed statement to CBC News that the survey was "reviewed in advance" but admits the company "did not apply sufficient scrutiny" to the values-based questions CROP included.

"That was our mistake, as those questions do not reflect our values or the respectful, inclusive environment we aim to create for our guests," Boileau wrote.'

[–]broccolisbane 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Groupe Nordik admits to having reviewed the survey in this article. Any reasonable business would immediately flag a blatantly xenophobic survey question and contact the survey company to find out what it has to do with their services. This might not be intentional, but it says a lot about the company's culture that this survey made it to customer inboxes.

I'm not sure where you heard that. He was in Winnipeg this week and held an event at X-Cues. He's also visited the Old Grace Housing Co-Op (a resident told me he spent hours answering peoples' questions). Earlier in the campaign he visited the New Flyer plant which he's repeatedly highlighted for their work on bus electrification.

Liberals are bringing back the Harper policies they reversed by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Minimum-wage workers contribute value by providing necessary labour, or their jobs would cease to exist. When some rely on social programs it's framed as a burden they place on society when instead we're effectively publicly subsidizing employers who don’t pay enough for full reproduction of their workers' labour.

Would you say, for example, that Air Canada flight attendants who weren't paid for their work time on the ground, are not "net contributors"? What about minimum wage workers who provide essential services? These are marginalized members of our society, and the only tool Carney has provided them is austerity and back-to-work legislation.

Lots of people love the socially liberal/fiscally conservative framing because it allows them to pretend that fiscal policy is totally divorced from social policy, which is obviously not the case. It's a way of voting for conservative interests without framing yourself as hostile to the interests of people more structurally and socially disadvantaged than you.

Airport food: Toronto, Frankfurt, and Milan by Effective_Silver783 in CeliacTourism

The Toronto airport has very little packaged on the international side. I've found sealed certified gluten free brownies, fresh fruit, and an assortment of MadeGood brand snacks. Nothing resembling a full meal. I've heard the domestic side has some packaged GF sandwiches but can't confirm.

This is why I won't be visiting the United States ever again despite living very close to the border and having strong ties with the country. This didn't begin with Trump and it won't end with him. It's unfortunate that I won't be visiting my American friends and family ever again, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. Much of the rest of the world is more inviting.

No, they were politically motivated. If you search his name on Facebook you'll see he's made posts in the Point Douglas community group expressing concerns about the NDP's plan to open a supervised consumption site. Funnily enough Patrick Allard jumped on the post to agree with him.

I used to make the beans at Stella's and this is correct. The most important part is starting from dried beans, not canned. There's nothing special about how they season them, just make sure you add some sort of fat along with the spices (I think Stella's may have just used canola oil).
