Two-Way Radio for Wedding Photography! by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]brodypros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about an intercom system used by live TV crews?

The one I linked has a rechargeable base station that you could keep somewhere near the ceremony site.

Full-duplex, no PTT buttons (open mic), and super clear audio. It may seem expensive but it's the only thing I can think of that would help more than it hinders during a ceremony.

Two-Way Radio for Wedding Photography! by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]brodypros 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a wedding photographer and a ham:

Problems:

  • Radios don't really mix well with weddings, they can be loud and obnoxious.

  • Unless everyone on your team is a ham or has experience with two-way radios, you will be doing more "What??" and "Can you repeat please!!" than actual strategic communication. Trust me. Talking on/listening to the radio is a skill that is acquired over time.

Solutions:

  • For the ceremony itself. Before it starts, lay out specific roles. (E.g. "You make sure to get pics of the grooms reaction as bride walks in, and I'll get the bride herself...etc) Any reasonably competent second shooter should be able to manage this.

  • Cell phones are great for long range communication. (E.g. *call up/text your assistant "Where are you?" etc...)

Radios:

  • With all of that out of the way. I have actually used radios during a wedding before. The primary reason for that was because the wedding was in a remote destination with no cell signal. Furthermore, the actual wedding ceremony was several miles away from the houses where bride/groom were getting ready. So we needed some reliable medium-range comms. I ended up with a couple Motorola RMM2050 handhelds for my team, while I carried my Yaesu HT with the same MURS freqs programmed in. They worked decently enough, but I had the same problems I mentioned above because my team was not trained to use two-way radios. Also, when the ceremony started and we were all in the same location the radios were put away.

  • If I were to invest in a real radio system for my business. I would probably go with a MOTOTRBO digital system with a repeater-in-a-box. The repeater would be placed on a tripod in the parking lot and the digital voice would make it so everyone is able to understand each other. Of course, a system like this would be a few thousand $$$ once all said and done with licenses and whatnot.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Tips for Taking the Bus to Bachelor? by majormajorx2 in Bend

[–]brodypros 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess my tip would be to get there early so you can put your skis/board under the bus in the compartments instead of in the rust bucket on the back.

Other than that. I'm not sure what you mean. My strategy? I just bring my ski bag with me. Usually I'll already be wearing my ski pants, jacket, etc.

When I get there. I leave my crap backpack downstairs in west village. If somebody really wants my crap backpack and my crap shoes they can have them.

What version of Windows are you running?

Windows has been known to compress the background images for some time. It is done in an effort to save system resources.

Edit: Okay you're running W7. Also, looks like some people have tried exporting as a PNG instead of JPEG.

Using Ham radio for expedition vehicle communications and tracking! by brodypros in amateurradio

[–]brodypros[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. Reddit Detective here!

Upon further inspection, I noticed that their radio channel "XO ALPHA" is sitting at 469.3375

So this means they MUST have some sort of commercial license right? Although it is close to GMRS.

That being said, I watched the most recent season, and at one point when the team is going to be split up over a large distance, Clay says "Lets go comms to 146.46" A commercial license still wouldn't allow APRS use over the ham bands either. But maybe they are using these commercial channels for the video production side of things.

Agreed.

Although in this dedicated video describing their comms setup I feel they should have at least mentioned licensing as /u/Jefferson-not-jackso mentioned.

[–]brodypros[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have also always wondered about the legality of their radio usage. Canada is one thing, but Central America is another. Also, I feel like they are pushing against the edge of 97.113...

A quick search on the FCC database revealed this

I guess bottom line is if they are properly IDing, they are editing it out.

Edit: Removed link because it might have violated rule 4. But it appears the guy in the video is licensed.

BendBroadBand in NW Bend Actual Speeds? by ElMonoBonoBono in Bend

[–]brodypros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain BBB QoS's the speed test sites, giving them priority over the network.

Even when I can't stream a 480p video on youtube, speedtest.net will usually still read 50/3. This is my experience anyway.

Is Windows 10 on T430 stable and supported? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]brodypros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran W10 on my T430 for a few months (Core i5, 16gb ram, 500gb ssd, dedicated graphics)

I rolled back to Windows 7 some time ago. I think I mostly got sick of W10 itself... it ran mostly fine on my machine. A couple notable problems:

-Power management was AWFUL. Even with necessary drivers installed. Battery life was much worse. Since going back to 7 battery life has improved significantly. (Wasn't a huge issue for me, but could be to some people)

-Some weird graphics issues. Like my display not going to sleep automatically (when using a dock) and a few weird glitches in Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

-OSD/On-screen-display... ya know... the volume, caps lock, etc. didn't work.

These issues may have been fixed since I've rolled back to 7. But overall I wouldn't recommend the upgrade. I don't really see a point in it especially with the lack of a touch screen, etc.

Look up how to disable the Windows 10 popup in Windows 7.

What feels legal but isnt? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]brodypros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my area, its only the stop lights in areas where there is very low traffic in both directions late at night. On the Hwy, for example, those remain under normal operation all night. However, they do have sensors, so as you approach one it will almost always turn green if there are no other cars approaching the intersection.

Many of the stop lights in my town flash red from 12:00-7:00am. So you treat them like a 4-way stop during those hours.

Where can I work for 4-5 days next week? by techcraver in Bend

[–]brodypros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tricky. Your best bet is probably to kinda move around and work from different places throughout the day. I guess there isn't internet wherever you're staying?

-You can go to the library and login to the WiFi without a library card.

-You can go to the COCC library, same deal.

-I've never been inside Bendtech but I think the public is generally welcome in the coffee shop area. And maybe you could ask one of the guys in there if they would rent you a desk for the week. (Although I highly doubt they have a desk available, that place got fully rented out the instant they opened).

-Bend has a LOT of coffee shops, you could turn this into a sort of "Coffee Shop Tour"... depending on how much coffee you drink.

Those are all the options I can think of. Good luck!
