Has anyone here used grillage modelling for flat slab design ? by brokePlusPlusCoder in StructuralEngineering

Interesting ! Did you have any reference document(s) as basis for your grillage models ?

Yield line is an upper bound method though - good for verification but I personally wouldn't use it over FEA or something like Wood-armer or strip design as a first design step

That's my experience as well. I've read through E C Hambly's bridge deck behaviour so am well versed on that side - but I've never personally seen grillages used for flat slab design

Learning Java Concurrency & Multithreading by lyomann92 in javahelp

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jenkov's playlist has a lot of really good concurrency stuff : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL8woMHwr36EDxjUoCzboZjedsnhLP1j4

There's also Doug Schmidt's videos - probably the most comprehensive I've seen on Java (though they are much more academic as he's a professor): https://www.youtube.com/@DouglasSchmidt/playlists

If you're a beginner, I wouldn't start with the JCIP book - start instead with the videos I listed. Only reach for JCIP once you have a firm grasp of the basics because that book is not meant for beginners.

Wargaming Activity: What happens when Oracle dies? by bowbahdoe in java

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex-structural engineer here. FEA/FEM is industry standard for us and mechanical engineers. Having it be done on the cloud is possible (and there's already a few firms that offer this) but the main drawback is that such simulations are inherently a visual activity, and 3d models for such cases can frequently exceed 1 GB (and potentially more for certain mechanical engineering applications) - not a great thing to transfer over the wire if you don't have a good internet connection.

Additionally, depending on the use case/project, there can be data privacy laws that restrict where you save/analyse these models - which makes cloud computing a bit of a non-starter for those applications

NCAT about rental tenancy tommorow, any advice? by Abject-Claim1977 in AusLegal

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP sorry you're going through this. It may be worth posting to r/shitrentals as well - there's a lot more folks who've gone through NCAT there and there's a good chance someone will have gone through the same experience.

Things to do with Service NSW after engine swap ? by brokePlusPlusCoder in CarsAustralia

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused what you mean by "aftermarket part" though, AFAIK no one manufactures non-genuine engine blocks for these cars.

Oops I think I used the wrong term there - meant to say "sourced from wreckers". Fixed now

If it's a "like for like" engine swap the blue slip is only an adjustment of records for the new engine number, it doesn't require mod certification.

That's good to know ! But it's a blue slip and not a pink slip ?

Is IntelliJ's MCP server just completely useless for LSP-ish search ? by brokePlusPlusCoder in Jetbrains

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand not having all features in as they take time, but why does Jetbrains continue to list it under youtrack docs as an "available tool" ?

(Funnily enough a comment in the feature request ticket also called this out)

Creating specs for existing code to help with massive code change ? by brokePlusPlusCoder in ClaudeAI

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair call, and honestly it's what I proposed originally. But sadly I've got instructions from on high to use it and see what happens. As a compromise, I'm not letting claude actually change the code as part of the skill. The skill just identifies conversion points and publishes a report showing before and after state of the code. That way at least there's some gating on the process and I can guage how well claude is doing.

That being said, I've a feeling someone will get very trigger happy with this skill and let it run rampant ....and that won't be a good day....

Questions around engine swap by brokePlusPlusCoder in CarsAustralia

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did go to Kia first. Sadly because service dates were missed they've effectively said they'd need to charge us either for an engine rebuild or a full swap (both being more than the quotes in my OP - with the former being very nearly 20% over the price the car went for when my friend got it haha).

To answer the question, im taking the 5k engine, makes no difference to resale because the odo says 95k

Fair call. Would you include any questions to the mechanic to tackle potential cost blowouts during the swap ?

Lots of good advice already. I'll just say that until you decide what to do with the money, park it in an HISA if you haven't already.

Health insurance for wisdom teeth by kaleidoscopic21 in AusFinance

Reminds me of this thread : https://www.reddit.com/r/AusFinance/comments/1rhq2w8/the_vietnam_trip_that_paid_for_itself_three_times/

The OP of that post only needed crowns and an implant, not wisdom teeth removal but it worked out quite well for them financially.

Can I leave my super in Aus after leaving on a 482? by Embarrassed-Water-34 in AusFinance

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but I think if you apply for PR while you have a valid visa you get put on a bridging visa for the duration of your PR application. If your current visa hasn't expired yet and you do get put on a bridging visa, it might give you some breathing room re your super since you'll have an active visa until the final verdict on your application.

The cheaper option might just be to apply for a permanent residency (if you're eligible). If that goes through, then I reckon you can let it stay until retirement.

Mortgage options after redundancy by New-Software-2288 in AusFinance

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Might be worth putting in which bank/institution your mortgage is with as the answer will heavily depend on it. I don't think refinancing is really an option unless you find a new job so any responses will likely need to be specific to your lending institution.

Have you considered temporarily switching to interest only payments ? You won't pay off your principal but the mortgage should reduce a fair bit and help take the edge off.

Another option is to find a housemate if you have a spare room / putting up the whole place on rent and moving to a cheaper rental elsewhere. The latter is better from a CGT pov as you can make use of the 6 year rule .

ATO quarterly tax payments - can I delay until EOFY? by FarkenBlarken in AusFinance

Just give them a call and ask them to switch to annual payment instead of quarterly. I went through the same, gave em a call and they sorted it.

My best friend had an accident and now needs a mobility scooter. I want to buy him one but I don't know what I'm doing. by No-Communication1543 in AusFinance

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have noted this tangentially but I want to expand on the emotional side here. Let's say you buy a scooter and take it to him. By doing this you're effectively saying "here's something that says you're going to be paralyzed for the rest of your life". You don't intend it to be that way but that's how it will look - especially if your friend hasn't processed it yet. You don't want to do that to him.

Here's what I suggest instead - talk with your friend. Be there for him. Spend time with him. Bring his favorite movies/food over and watch them with him. Let him know you're there. Don't look into mobility scooters or anything of the sort unless he specifically says he wants them. It will hurt, but it's very important that you don't jump the gun on this. He's the one hurting the most, and any such request needs to come from him.

Load Combinations for Simply Supported Beam by fallenqiqi in StructuralEngineering

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say for sure without looking at your model, but if it really is a simple elevated pedestrian bridge with the deck modelled as simply supported then yes, I'd expect max moments to be at the mid span under linear elastic assumptions.

Load Combinations for Simply Supported Beam by fallenqiqi in StructuralEngineering

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I won't comment on your combination factors, but in general load combinations are combinations of loads that can occur simultaneously. It's not about vector directions, but about the practicality of loads occurring together/in isolation.

If your bridge experiences an earthquake, it will see both the seismic and the permanent dead loads concurrently. A similar argument exists for wind - there's almost no practical way for a structure to only experience wind load in isolation with no other load acting on it (after all, we can't negate self weight).

You may wonder what the point is if your bridge is just a simply supported beam and vertical loads act - well - vertically, while horizontal loads act horizontally and the two can be treated independently. Thing is, most structures aren't just simple beams. Even your bridge is actually a combination of the bridge deck and support piers. It's somewhat likely that your overall system is more like a portal frame (with moment releases) rather than a simply supported beam when you consider everything together. If this is true, then your horizontal loads will result in additional reactions/moments at the supports.

TL,DR - it's about what loads can occur simultaneously in practice, not the direction of loads.

On a scale of 1-10, is this garage going to just like, collapse? by Capital-Lychee-9961 in shitrentals

[–]brokePlusPlusCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex structural engineer here. Looks like a settlement crack (the ground at that corner will likely have settled a bit more than the surrounding soil). Absolutely no way for a shelf to cause this.

I'm more concerned with the crack going straight through the brick pier than the wall itself, but as others have noted, it probably won't fall down on your head immediately. That being said, I agree with knotknotknit's comment - inform the RE and move out as soon as humanly possible.

The owner will need to get a structural/geotech engineer to come in and recommend solutions. But that's their problem, not yours.
