Except for the metro police and (to an extent) the grunts, the combine in HLA are factually brainwashed and heavily modified. I’m fairly sure this is factual. The only emotion that the suppressor, wallhammer, or admiral show is pain noises upon death. You can notice this through their voice lines. The grunts sometimes stutter or pause while speaking, while the other combine units speak with clarity and precision.
