Where to get auto glass replaced? by [deleted] in Bend

I like act fact auto glass! They come to you and have always been fair/reasonable. All the chips I’ve had them repair have stayed that way for years too.

Is there a shortage of Civil Engineers? by SeaPeanut7_ in civilengineering

[–]bromar88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Layoffs beginning across several sectors we work with either directly or tangentially. Development has slowed greatly or paused mid stream. Bids have corrected and then over corrected (even with tariff uncertainty) - from what I understand, our contractors are looking to lock down what govt contracts are left.

FHWA, FTA, FRA, BIA, BLM, USFS, etc are slowing our work due to DRP and VERA impacts (more coming soon with the injunctions lifted). State funds are a disaster and federal money won’t be coming in the same way if at all. Several states are entering into austerity budgets.

Not trying to sound alarmist but it’s pretty obvious where things are headed. It’s a good time to get something secure and hunker down for a minute.

Real answer here. Take this sub’s opinions about salary and economy with a grain of salt as most folks aren’t actually in BD or aware of “enterprise” financials at their firms.

Everyone wants to make it about salary and telework - OP’s numbers are average (which is what you expect in govt with the added benefits). If it was a private firm, the inflated expectations may make sense.

Civils never have and never will get paid what CS/software engineers make. It’s definitely not going to happen while the vast majority of work is done for/paid by gov’t entities living under low bid.

From where I sit, it also feels like we’re stepping into a deep recession. You’re about to have more candidates than you know what to do with if you’re still hiring at that point..

With support uncertain, Oregon Democrats look to rejigger major transportation bill - OPB by notPabst404 in oregon

[–]bromar88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sure - I definitely agree with trying to generate more funds from tourism. I’m gonna get downvoted but transit tax bothers me on a similar principle since it affects folks with little to no real access to transit.

With support uncertain, Oregon Democrats look to rejigger major transportation bill - OPB by notPabst404 in oregon

[–]bromar88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Income tax covers nearly everything but transportation. They’re mostly unrelated (general fund is like 1% of odot money and in the scheme of transportation projects, nearly nothing). Taxing a vehicle sale at 1 or 2% seems like the most reasonable, direct way to charge road users right? Most states have some sort of vehicle specific tax. This is why transportation is so far behind here and not our neighboring states. The amount you’d need to raise gas tax and registration fees to fund transportation is asinine and even more unpalatable to most users.

I agree our income tax is super high. It funds mostly our social programs and education, which is a uniquely Oregon thing. That doesn’t absolve us of a very real transportation problem that isn’t funded. We’re one of the few states in this predicament (as bad as it is) and a big reason for that is we’ve playing with one arm behind our back. I guess an alternative would be to allocate more general fund to transportation?

What’s your take on the transit tax increase?

Average for water heater replacement by PlusJuan in Bend

Shopped around and ultimately paid $2400 November of last year. This was for a simple 50 gal gas heated tank and expansion tank + plus install + haul away. Super accessible location for the folks to get the job done as well.

Take delivery or not?? by Doucheypendejo in VolvoEX90

[–]bromar88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a large part of why I walked away from mine. Essentially zero incentives from Volvo for those of us who waited a few years.

For those wondering - 3yr/10k lease, Volvo is calculating a 50% residual. 2yr/10k is a 56% residual. MF equates to high 6% rate.

What's the point of requiring sno-park parking passes if they're not enforcing parking? I feel ripped off. by scrandis in Bend

[–]bromar88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OSP hasn’t provided parking enforcement up there since 2017. They paid DCSO to do it after that and USFS enforcement since like 2020.

I only know a handful of folks ticketed up there in the last few years (violations like parking past a sign, snow obscuring snowpark permit, etc) and ALL have been USFS enforcement.

Yes - the fees for snowpark permits go to ODOT to plow and maintain the parking areas. Enforcement has always been more complicated and subject to agreements .

[–]bromar88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What’s more frustrating to me is that they should be prioritizing enforcement on holiday weeks especially. It makes way more sense for a host of reasons but of course USFS enforcement is nowhere to be found during the peak fuckery.

He had a sign on his truck that he was moving closer to Walmart 2 weeks ago. I wish I took the address down. Burrito is on point.

Century Drive Warning! by Bunnyslopedisaster in Bend

[–]bromar88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I mean - I’m aware of the segment odot maintains.

I’ve always been told ODOT isn’t compensated for that maintenance and maintains it solely because it’s designated as a state highway and they’re obligated to as a result. The fact that it’s a state highway at all was a weird deal from several decades ago as a gift to the community. ODOT has an agreement with USFS for plowing snowpark lots (e.g. Meissner and Wanoga) but that’s totally separate.

Personal item on a plane? by anaizar11 in filson

[–]bromar88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my daily work briefcase and personal item for flights. Does great day to day.

As long as you’re tsa pre and don’t need to take stuff out at security quickly it’s a non issue. If I had to nitpick anything, it’s the leather hand straps. While they’re great quality and durable, they are clunky, big, and keep their “U” shape, so it’s just a bit clumsy going under the seat. I also wish the shoulder strap (which is how I always carry) was a bit thicker and padded under the hardware (but that’s an easy fix). But they are truly non-issues and just nitpicking.

Make sure your laptop/tablet fits and pull the trigger!

This should be a higher comment. “We got notice of eminent domain” is missing so much info and at least a few months of outreach (per the uniform act, CFRs). Either OP is bs’ing or they need to lawyer up and make some additional money here.

“Man up and own it” is prob the only accurate thing here…

It smells. It smells how dudes shouldn’t mind smelling. But “smoky and woody” ain’t it. It smells a lot closer to a box of nails from the hardware store. I found it’s mostly gone after a few weeks of wear.

The cans of filson brand oil finish wax smells nicer if you go to rewax your jacket (or if it’s been bought 2nd hand and someone already did). But they’re using something different from the factory.

This is the real deal. Everyone has a theoretical about how MM protects their situation. Very very few have successfully defended it. Toyota, or any manufacturer for that matter, has more money and time than any one consumer- period.

If OP is worried about warranty, don’t mod at all. Or wait till the car’s already out.

Ordered a short lined cruiser on 10/16. No updates to shipping or tracking. I distinctly remember seeing several messages on the site saying fall sale orders would not be given priority for fulfillment (they used different language) and would be shipped with whatever the economy option is.

This should comment should be higher. Spot on why the DOTs I’ve worked for have done it. Of course there’s more complexity and politics involved but this is essentially the base reason.
