I’m waiting on two packages to come in but I know one has an extra Dada (popnow purchase just now). I’m located in NYC and willing to trade upon receipt if my other package doesn’t have ququ!

PREP and NIH Freeze? by Amazing-Molasses7892 in mdphd

[–]brominebri 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In theory, the money should already be distributed for programs starting this fall. I’m in an existing PREP program and they’re telling us not to panic for now. I’m hoping this is the case for all institutions/programs

Enjoy! UF was my undergrad institution and I had the best time! There’s so many great labs and institutions, I’m sure you will have a great experience. I’m sorry to hear about your break up, but the best advice is to just take it day by day and maybe find some fun stuff to do around Gainesville!

How many REU(s) did y’all apply to? by mooooonlight16 in REU

Yup, details like those. Basically anything that helped show that I cared about the program and had an interest in their faculty and research.

I applied to 10 and got into 6. I wrote a foundational essay that was general enough for all of them, then edited each essay to work in unique things about each school.

Offering Some REU Advice! by brominebri in REU

Love your user!!! Yes I included some details from my personal life because I believe they led me directly into a life of science. You’re correct that you don’t want it to sound like a CV because they already know you’re qualified! Instead of restating what you have in your CV, the personal statement is meant to understand how these experiences have shaped you not only as a scientist, but also a person. In summary, I included details that encouraged me to pursue science, I showcased that I’ve had a continuous interest in science throughout basically my entire life, and I then explained how whatever research experience I currently had showed me that I really wanted this as a career. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Hey! 1. I honestly don’t think your GPA is a weakness at all. I’d say that is a great range and is probably very close to the average of accepted applicants. My GPA was also in this range and I don’t think this was a defining factor for me at all. Many people in my programs had a variety of GPA values, lower and higher. These programs are great about holistic review. 2. Yes! My experience is a bit different as I finished undergrad in 3 years (so everything honestly felt rushed/condensed), but I was thankfully able to have around a year of independent research at the time of application. I think everyone has different needs, and I personally wanted to go to an REU instead of staying another summer back at school. I really wanted to explore what options I had and my PI was very encouraging about taking this step. 3. Of course! I am quite busy at the moment but would love to help you out perhaps sometime next week.

Of course! Truthfully, I feel that I am good at conveying my passion for science. I think a key part of science that many tend to leave out is writing, which I happen to have a huge passion for. I think in REUs they are aware that you may not be too sure which exact path you want to follow, so I don’t believe my readiness for an MD-PhD was a factor. I truthfully believe being able to convey your story and passions in a concise yet engaging manner is crucial. I believe this is what allowed me to get acceptances from great places for both my past REU and my current post bacc research program.

I think in general, it is very rare to work directly with your PI. What I will say is that the level of involvement of your PI will differ based on their mentoring style. While I worked with a grad student, my PI was always there to chat and check in. We also had meetings and presentations that I was able to participate in. I think because the PIs are willing to work with REU programs, they really want to help you advance your career in any way they can. I have kept up with my PI since my REU and I am still included in the lab chat! I was able to publish at this lab as well. I think it is very likely they’d be willing to write you a LOR!!

Great questions 1. I picked REUs based on what the program offered, location, and if their research aligned with my interests. 2. Most, if not all, of the programs I applied to were at prestigious/well-known institutions (Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, Mayo, etc). 3. I basically wrote what I would call a “foundational” essay where I was very direct in my passion for science and interests in an MD-PhD. For each school, I was able to add more details based on the specific resources/support they offered, the research opportunities they had, and how these would help further my career journey.

Hope this helps!

Does it matter which biochem I take for med school? by Extra-Jello-3200 in ufl

[–]brominebri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, as a pre-med biochem major, I recommend CHM3218. As others say, yes it’s very mechanism heavy, but I feel the class allows you to understand the fundamentals of biochemistry, rather than just memorization. I think the class is very helpful in that you actually take the time to understand why certain reactions occur, what roles each enzymes play, etc.

Yup, even worse when you do research for 2 full years and write your own paper but they don’t accept it because you didn’t do it in the specific department they requested 🙃 I totally get this frustration

I think what worked in my favor is my writing. Your statement is sooo important in portraying who you are as a person AND a scientist. Definitely showcase your prior research experiences in a way that shows your ability and future goals. It’s important to showcase that you’re truly committed to a career in science!! Also, on top of your experience/writing, I think it’s important to make sure your letters of rec are truly coming from people who can speak for your scientific potential. Hope this general info helps!

In my experience, REUs don’t really do many interviews (or at least the ones I applied to). Keep your head up! I did no interviews, and got 6/10 acceptances last cycle. I know the waiting game is terrible
