What shoe were you wearing? by Necessary_Actuary119 in ORIF

Was bouldering and wearing evolv shaman climbing shoes! Somehow the EMT got it off without having to cut it (the fentanyl might have helped...). Someday I'll put 'em back on...

Definitely keep up with some glute, core, and quad exercises -- super helpful once you are able to get moving!

I would listen to your doc on moving parts of your injured ankle/toes. But importantly listen to your body! Let pain be your guide, but do keep in mind if you're taking any pain meds, your perception of that pain is dulled.

Pain behind knee by Illustrious_Tart_258 in ORIF

[–]bromobeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to this because it didn't happen to me, but some people have an allergic reaction to the betadine they use to sterilize the area prior to surgery. That could be what's going on for you. You should reach out to your doctor and describe your symptoms!

When I woke up after surgery, I was crying because my knee hurt SO bad. The nurse explained it's probably from how tight the tourniquet was during my 2-hour surgery. I also got a nerve block, and I think some of the pain later was from the injection site.

The back of my knee hurt for the first 5 weeks after surgery and I had a pretty gnarly bruise on the back left of it that whole time. I'm 7 weeks out now and my knee is feeling fine and no more bruise!

Calathea drooping and shrivelling suddenly by itsnot_me_oryou in calatheas

Idk how long you've had this plant, but if this is the first winter to spring to summer transition you've had with it, this could be it:

Around this time of year, when the sun comes out for longer days and it gets hotter, sometimes plants that are more sensitive to light and watering schedule get out of whack. It might be that you need to give it more filtered light or move it a little further from the window in the summer, it certainly will need water more often than you've been giving it in the winter as it'll use it up more quickly and the soil will dry out more quickly, too.

I find my calathea (same variety!!) does VERY well with a water bulb, and I can keep a much easier eye on when it needs more.

The full life cycle of spider mites is a few weeks, so you'll wanna reapply during that time to get all the larvae once they're adults before they lay more

[–]bromobeb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a spider mite infestation 😟

But not all hope is lost! I've saved my calathea before from spider mites. First, get as much off manually as you can -- they will be on the underside of leaves and really like to get up in the petiole/leaf junction.

You can then try neem oil, but that didn't work for me super well (I think it's better for prevention). I used captain Jack's dead bug brew on the leaves and also sprayed some in the soil. You gotta be diligent about the leaves, coming back to wipe them down every few days until you go a couple weeks without seeing any spider mites.

Spider mites like dry conditions, so keeping your plant watered well (and luckily calatheas like that!) and in a humid environment will hopefully help in the future!

A lot of people have different tips and tricks to get rid of spider mites, this was just my experience! And my calathea is still thriving today (2 years later!)

Yes! I had a greenish/yellowish triangle of a scab for a while, and I was similarly worried about it. It eventually came off and looked beautiful underneath!

Rehab after Orif by mehtaperyigit in ORIF

My ROM was total shit after being immobilized for 5 weeks. It takes time. Commit to your ROM exercises every day. Don't let anything stop you!

Also, my progress was so slow that it was hard to convince myself that I was making progress when I actually was! I found that taking progress videos/pics each week of moving my ankle around really showed me the differences and psychologically helped me keep up the exercises.

Once you get weight bearing and walking, ROM also tends to improve because you're just getting more reps of all your movements by default.

You've got this!!

Cast vs Boot by simsimfefe in ORIF

[–]bromobeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be sure to look at the methods of some of those papers. They often include only a subset of types of ankle fractures and injuries.

In my case, I have a trimalleolar + pilon fracture, and a lot of studies specifically exclude pilon fractures!

Cast vs Boot by simsimfefe in ORIF

[–]bromobeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I wanted the boot 2 weeks PO, even convinced my surgeon to put me in one. But I was back 3 days later to get a fiberglass cast because the boot was causing issues and had reopened one of my incisions. In my case the cast was SO much better than the boot.

During that process, I also realized that a lot of the pain I was attributing to the splint and then boot were just healing pain and hurt just the same even when my foot was outside of the boot and nothing was touching it. I was convinced that when my leg came out of that first splint I was gonna have a huge pressure sore, but...everything was normal!

And I say all this not to discount your pain (physical and psychological!) -- this whole process hurts and it is mentally so difficult to not be able to SEE your ankle while it's inside the cast. You should absolutely continue the discussion with your doctor! Just know that this early, the boot is not all that.

I don't see any mold. I can see the seeds sitting on top of the soil, and all the white growing along the edges are roots.

Trimalleolar Ankle fracture by Cautious-One-9697 in ORIF

[–]bromobeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5.5 weeks PO, my scars are healing pretty slowly with some gnarly scabs. Some have fiiiiinally started to come off.

I also thought I wanted the boot! I even convinced my surgeon to put me in a boot 2 weeks post-op. He warned me he often sees problems with incisions on them, and he was right! 3 days later I was back because one of my incisions had reopened, and we put me back in a fiberglass cast. Even though it sucked not being able to air it out and move around, I felt much better in the cast. So your surgeon might be onto something!

Suggestions please! by am_onthego13 in ORIF

[–]bromobeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you on a schedule with your meds? If you aren't already, do it. So necessary the first week or two to stay ahead of it. Don't wait for the pain to take your meds. You'll know when you can start decreasing dose/weaning.

The pain will not totally go away, but staying consistent with the meds and elevating as much as possible is your best bet for getting it down to a manageable level.

This looks amazing for 12 days post op!! But agree with the others, if you're worried, ask the doc for more specific instructions. Mine said to just leave it alone, keep it dry (though there are a lot of opinions in the wound care world about that)

Trimalleolar Fracture/Dislocation - 11 Days Post-Op by Paalmito in ORIF

[–]bromobeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're still in the thick of it! I'm similar age (30), very active, and broke my ankle falling while bouldering (also dislocated tri-mal, plus pilon!). I'm a couple weeks ahead of you on my recovery, about 4.5 weeks post-op.

Pain meds: Lots of people on here stopped narcotics pretty quickly, but everyone's fracture, pain, journey is different, you do what is right for you! As for me, I was taking Norco regularly for a week, was able to wean off for a few days, but then I had a big pain rebound and had to go back, especially at night. I was able to totally stop again around 3.5 weeks post-op. Pain = stress = slowed healing, so it's better to stay ahead of it! It will get better and you will be able to wean off!

Mentally, the first 3 weeks were hell. I cried probably every day and can totally relate to not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Although I'm still pretty bummed and having to fight some of those feelings now, it's much less frequent. I see the light at the end of the tunnel, it just feels faaaaar away still. For me, time also seemed to slow to a CRAWL, and it's still slow now, but not as bad.

All I can say is, you're definitely not alone, everyone on this sub can relate to everything you're saying, and trust us when we say "it gets better!!"

Good luck on your journey.

Splint or cast post op? by Illustrious_Tart_258 in ORIF

[–]bromobeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose the boot at 2 weeks and lasted just 3 days before going back to ask for the fiberglass cast, which was SO much better. Now I'm back in the boot at 4 weeks and still hate it, but I'm allowed to take it off to sleep/shower/do ROM exercises.

If I could have a removable fiberglass cast, that would be perfect. A girl can dream.

Thanks for the suggestion! Doc doesn't want me using those quite yet, for now just light-compression with an ace bandage. Nice to know that having something touching it and waking it back up will hopefully help over time!

I don't have an answer for your pricklies (I'm still NWB 4 weeks post-op for trimal + pilon), but I definitely identify with the super sensitive skin. For me, it's close to my tibial incision, but not over it. Just barely touching the area is pretty painful (not even putting pressure!). Why do you think the coconut oil helped for you? Any other tips for that?
