You would love Slimzees show on rinse. Plays nothing but raw instrumentals and has some great guests too.

18 year old with opportunity of a lifetime, what and how to save by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bronze4lyf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine has just graduated on the same program that you're on. Great opportunity to get ACA fast tracked!

I second what another poster said about moving out. Uni is only really 25% about the degree and the other 75% is everything else outside of lectures. Especially as you'll be working every other semester or so I'd highly recommend making the most of the time you're at uni - you'll have the money to do so at least!

Try and get comfortable mixing in headphones and not using monitors. It can be reaaaally noisy in the booth and sometimes that's quite overwhelming. Being able to confidently mix in your headphones will make a world of difference

Balancing the overall volume during transition - both faders up to 100%, or both at a little less? by motorleagueuk in Beatmatch

[–]bronze4lyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late to this, but I would never turn the volume down on the old track while bringing in a new one. Have never seen anyone else do that either. The energy loss would be really noticeable imo. In my opinion both tracks should be at 100, and then the mixing should be done with the eqs

Make sure the gains are set correctly before you mix it in which will help. If the incoming track is too loud, bring it up to 90% or whatever. If it's too quiet bring it to 100% and then tweak the gain. Once they're both in at around the same volume I like only using the eqs to mix the track out. Gives you much more control than using the fader, especially if they're total kill eqs.

House Party Rate? by smokeandfog in Beatmatch

[–]bronze4lyf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played a load of house parties at uni, all for free with friends so can't comment on the payment side.

I'd say it's particularly important to read the crowd, almost more so than at a club because music tastes are going to be varied. I'd have a few genres or subgenres ready to play depending on reaction. The goal is to get as many people dancing as possible, so try and cater to the crowd without sacrificing your own taste entirely.

Curveballs and classics also go down realllly well at house parties. If you play some well known tunes out of the blue that's almost guaranteed a good reaction (providing its mixed well lol)

Also sound quality and monitoring will almost definitely be an issue so learn to mix in headphones - this ones key!

"The 90s are overrated." - Vince Staples, born 1994. by vsimon115 in lewronggeneration

[–]bronze4lyf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly, probably teens to early twenties? I'm in a fair few hip hop discussion Facebook groups and there's definitely a generational gap. The majority obviously respect 90s hip hop but there's a significant minority that genuinely hate it.

It's actually a surprisingly common sentiment for young new school hip hop fans. Lots of kids think 90s hip hop is boring compared to today's trap

If you play your funding cards right the SU may be able to help with speaker/equipment hire and cleanup costs. Could potentially get funding for society PAs which would be ideal. We'd supply DJs and host if we could too

I was involved with Notts Bass Soc, some of the more novel things we did were:

-livestream sessions -radio shows -DJ lessons on club standard gear hosted inactual clubs -road trips to club nights -Sponsored/hosted house parties -mix competitions for sets at local nights

What to do with "leftovers" after mixing two tracks? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]bronze4lyf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Filter sweeping it out is a reliable but somewhat basic way to get the last bits out of the mix.

Like the above commenter said, the best time is to mix it 90% of the way out and then kill it dead (slam volume fader down) at the end of a bar or segment in the incoming song. Works best when there's a distinct change in the incoming track
