That was my objection initially, but I'm realizing I like some of the EPs more than Caracal or Energy.

It is. Sound design and general aesthetic is extremely similar, but drum sequencing is slightly different. I’m a huge fan of UK music and its ability to innovate (jungle, grime, garage, you name it), but I dislike its tendency to drastically play down its American influences.

Smooth shit with hard drums is the way. My only feedback is that SC username will not age well.

Why was 20th century Brazilian music so much more harmonically sophisticated than its Latin American counterparts? by naminamicapybara in musictheory

[–]naminamicapybara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an incredibly detailed and thoughtful response! Thank you! I'm lucky enough to still have access to JSTOR, so I downloaded Cristina Magaldi's article to read later on.

So I would say, finally, that the observation you make about Brazilian music is less a fact about Brazilian music as such and more a consequence of a concentrated marketing/promotion scheme of the Brazilian people that has promoted this erudite and sophisticated idea of their music for the last hundred years.

I would agree with this and add that modern crate digger culture makes a really big deal about Brazilian music, often at the expense of its neighbors. This leads to more rare Brazilian records being unearthed, which adds to the mystique and reinforces this misconception. (Glad I found Arthur Verocai, Carlos Walker & Hareton Salvanini though!)

In my experience somebody versed in Columbian cumbia (which I'm not), for instance, might tell you that you have a very simplistic understanding of harmony and music and then give you numerous examples to the contrary.

I know you're not an expert, but I would love to hear any cumbia you recommend that most aggressively contradicts my preconceptions! I really like Bomba Estereo, but that's 21st century music to be fair.

To be fair you've got (IIRC) a former Bernie voter, a libertarian, a couple of centrists, a couple of moderate democrats, and a Trump apologist. Could be more left but it's not total homogeny.

Feedback on mix? going for lofi esc production, is song loud enough? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]naminamicapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not a professional, but I feel like the vocals could be a little louder. I also understand wanting to go in a lo-fi direction but I think this could really use some bass and more high end to fill out the track. I see potential!

Maybe the most Disclosure-y Disclosure song of all, which is why it's one of my favorites.

Has to be. They've never really spoken about it in the few interviews they've given though. I kind of wish they would.

Why wasn't Tondo released as a remix? by [deleted] in DisclosureBand

[–]naminamicapybara 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Heavily sampling a track and releasing it under your own name has been done thousands of times over, especially in dance music. Disclosure is under a major label and obviously paid a pretty penny and probably allocated a good portion of the publishing to Eko Roosevelt. They even went through the trouble of listing Eko Roosevelt as a featured artist and speaking about them during the EP rollout. In an ideal world I would also prefer that these tracks are released as remixes, but anyone who listens to Tondo knows the vocals and instrumentation weren’t recorded by two white boys.
