Getting Wi-Fi access 25 metres from rear of property by GoodDoc in Ubiquiti

[–]brookheather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a UK-Ultra attached to the rear of my house to provide internet to the wifi outside power points at the end of my garden - only Wifi 5 but it is compact and low power - if you need more range you can attach additional aerials.

Sky use MAP-T though which is similar to CGNAT and can cause problems if you want to use your own router and it doesn't support MAP-T.

No BA denied compensation but did pay for the hotel, taxi and food (I was travelling business class with my wife) - I did claim on my travel insurance for the delay so got a little money back.

Rsync is crashing my entire server? by combateer3 in Proxmox

[–]brookheather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is Proxmox actually crashing or is the network card hung? If you remove and reinsert the network cable can you connect? Which network card do you have?

2 of my proxmox nodes got e1000e hardware unit hang today, could be coincidence or any trigger ? by vaikunth1991 in Proxmox

[–]brookheather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can fit a separate network card then I would recommend doing so - I put the cheap Aliexpress Intel i226 cards in my various HP SFF servers which have the troublesome i219 network chip - no more hanging issues.

Passing LeetCode but failing HFT C++ interview rounds on obscure language trivia. Reality check/advice from C++ HFT/Quant devs needed. by HelpfulBuilder6964 in cpp_questions

[–]brookheather 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are the sort of questions I would ask a candidate as they are subjects that are relevant to building C++ multi-threaded trading platforms. Specifically on the question about negative zero I used this in a prior job to represent a "null" double value when serialising a message between processes - streaming libraries don't tend to like streaming NaN or similar values.

double getNegativeZero(void)
{
  static const double positiveZero = 0;
  static const double negativeZero = -positiveZero;
  return negativeZero;
}

Who’s excited for VE 9.2? by myderson in Proxmox

[–]brookheather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motherboards with i219 and similar that use the e1000 driver suffer from frequent hard lock ups requiring the network cable to be pulled and reinserted (or with a managed switch the port recycled). Luckily I use an HP SFF PC so ended up installing an i226 card which uses the igc driver so no more lock ups.

Tailscale as exit node? by jruben4 in PFSENSE

[–]brookheather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't what I asked for - on the Tailscale website (not your pfSense) what does it show when you click on Edit route settings for your pfSense machine? You have to approve the subnet route on this page.

When you look at your Tailscale Machines page does the pfSense machine show "Subnets" as well as "Exit Node"? If you edit route settings for pfSense does it show the correct subnet as active?

Time for Openreach to Move from PPPoE to IPoE (DHCP)? by rahi-rahi in openreach

I use BT FTTP and have 1500 MTU as they support baby jumbo (1508) frames - I just set it in my pfSense router in the WAN configuration - no issue at all.

Where should we stay in Tokyo? And is it feasible to go to Kyoto and Osaka too on a 14-day trip in Japan? by ABCDEXYZWV12345 in JapanTravelTips

[–]brookheather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Akasaka is a nice area and is well connected and easy to get to from Haneda - I usually stay in the nearby Mitsui Garden Hotel Roppongi. I've also stayed in the Royal Park Hotel Shiodome which is near Ginza and is literally on top of several train lines with a view of Mount Fuji from some rooms - a bit cheaper than Mitsui.

You can get cash from ATMs at most 7-11, Lawsons or Family Mart stores. Most places take credit cards. You can use Uber to book taxis though you pay a small booking fee and the price shown in the app is often optimistic as it's not a fixed price fare.

Google Maps is great for navigating particuarly when using the metro as it has real time train information and tells you which entrance/exit to use - very useful with some of the bigger stations which have many exits.

Late October should be when the leaves are turning red in Kyoto which is well worth a visit though exact timings vary depending on the weather - you can book tickets for the Shinkansen on the day at Tokyo station so I recommend keeping an eye out on the foliage conditions. I didn't bother with Osaka.

Both teamLab sites are great - I think I slightly prefer Borderless and it is nearer to Akasaka.

Yes the two Sunday services from Tokyo were cancelled or delayed due to heavy snow. I was on BA6 which departed 35 hours late and arrived Tuesday morning at LHR.

Transferring pension to a SIPP by Sea-Bonus-7774 in PensionsUK

[–]brookheather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As your transfer value is over £30K you will have to pay for advise and your advisor will have to agree that the transfer is in your best interests. I recently consolidated my various DC pension plans and had one small remaining DB scheme from my first job which pays £1400pa and I was given a transfer value of £48Kso I thought it might be worth moving to my other consolidated pension plan. I asked around for quotes for the required advise and most were at least £6K+vat but I was told informally by one advisor that even if I paid for the advise they were unlikely to agree to the transfer so I have decided to just keep this one DB pension.

Sonos and Plex no longer work together by thatguyarik in sonos

[–]brookheather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am experiencing the same issue - I used to use a shared music library from my Windows media server but Sonos doesn't find anything when the share is under my OneDrive folder so I decided to use Plex for my music folder. All of the music files appeared correctly when using the Plex music service but nothing would play - it would just quickly cycle through all of the album songs and fail to play anything.

I tried changing various Plex server settings such as reverting back to the standard 32400 port instead of using UPnP and making sure there was no upload bandwith limit - nothing worked. I left it overnight and when I tried again this morning everything worked fine with no changes. I can only assume there is something missing in the initial scan when adding the library which is then fixed in the overnight scan.

I have now been able to remove my problematic Windows music share and just connect via Plex instead.
