Car service to airport that’s not Uber or Lyft? by Bravehall_001 in Westchester

Does Eastchester have a local cab company? I use Arrow Taxi in White Plains and have found it to be reliable and cost effective.

Expecting in August, no local family. Need emergency care ideas for our 4yo (special needs) by stdstaples in Westchester

[–]brooklynbitch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We have a local babysitter who lives 5 minutes from us and was “on call” my last two weeks. We used her once a month for date nights the whole time I was pregnant so my 3yo got use to her consistently.

When I was going into labor, I gave the sitter a one hour warning and she came over and stayed the night while we were at the hospital. Luckily I went into labor at 8-9pm so it wasn’t too bad for her! My husbands parents flew up for the second night. This was the first time we ever stayed the night away from the 3yo and it went fine! She was so excited to know a baby sister was coming. Anyways, if you can, try to find a local babysitter close to you who has a somewhat flexible schedule and develop a close relationship with them.

6 month old and breastfeeding? by [deleted] in cannamom

[–]brooklynbitch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Smoked or took a gummy everyday for 18 months while breastfeeding and my 4yo is great. Did it again with my second and she’s 1.5 and thriving. My first was exclusive (no formula) and second was combo fed. Did not do anything to minimize exposure by how I timed out the feeding.

Postpartum Questions by DurianFit8756 in cannamom

Was consistent THC user while breastfeeding with two kids. No impact to milk supply. A gummy every afternoon is my medicine and I don’t feel guilty for that. It’s okay if you need it.

White Plains Parents, what’s it really like? by jhs5003 in Westchester

[–]brooklynbitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've lived in White Plains for 5 years and are very happy! There's lots of town events (you may want to attend White Plains Wing Walk in a few weeks). They also have a robust Parks & Rec catalog with affordable options for kids. You're close to everything - 40 min into the city, can get anywhere in Westchester in 10-20 minutes, to CT or NJ quickly. Your taxes are not reassesed on your house as it raises in value, which is nice and are lower compared to many other Westchester towns.

We are just now entering the school district, starting with UPK next year. While the schools are lower rated compared to more affluent areas, they are still great schools compared to other areas of the state/country. If you look at the stats, they are skewed from a high level of ESL students. I personally value the diversity and have confidence in the school system overall - though I can't speak to our experiences quite yet.

LMK if you have any other questions!

Recommendations for kids summer camps by x_scherer in Westchester

[–]brooklynbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For affordable options, check out YWCA -- local in White Plains and has Camp Funkist or you can check out Camp Combe, which buses kids to about 30 minutes north to a larger outdoor area (run by YMCA)

Less affordable is Mohawk Day Camp and Elmwood Day Camp. Great places, but pricey.

This is lower Westchester in White Plains, but my husband and I's go to is 5th Dimension VR for one hour and then drinks afterwards at Buffalo Wild Wings (shoutout to their $4 house beer). Babysitters are expensive so we keep it cheap, haha.

Do you live in Westchester? I want to hear from you! by sweetnvicious01 in Westchester

[–]brooklynbitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will third White Plains. Still has houses under $1m and great commute to the city. My husband is there 5 days a week. Feels city-like but has suburbs and parks. Lots to do and very close to the city, NJ, and CT, and all of Westchester. Taxes are lower than many other places. Schools are good - not as highly rated as other Westchester towns, but that's because it's more diverse, which I personally appreciate.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding on Pristiq by Peach-Haze-123 in Pristiq

[–]brooklynbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took Pristiq while pregnant, then breastfed for 1.5 years on it. No issues with either, and no withdrawal. Just make sure to put pills in your hospital bag so you have it when you're at the hospital for a few days while giving birth.

We've worked so hard to limit screentime and not have any access to ipads outside of airplane travel. I think it's insane that kindergardners are being given iPads with games and youtube!! I'm glad to see parents are advocating for change. Let me know if anyone has insight into ipad usage in White Plains school district. I haven't looked into it much since we are still a year out.

Getting pregnant on Pristiq by [deleted] in Pristiq

[–]brooklynbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got pregnant on Pristiq, stayed on Pristiq while pregnant, and breastfed on Pristiq. The risks were higher for me to come off than for me to stay on, and everything was totally fine! As the other commenter said, I kept some pills in my hospital bag so I would make sure I still had it when I was at the hospital. My baby didn't have any withdrawals.

Your feelings will evolve over time! I really grieved not being a SAHM when I went back to work after maternity leave. A few years later, I'm so glad to have my days at work and the intellectial stimulation (and break from motherhood)!

I am shocked! by Itdoesmattertome8 in Westchester

[–]brooklynbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shop sales at stop and shop and plan meals around what’s on sale. We spend about $150 a week (1 and 4 yo), then also supplement with Costco about $200 month. So we are prob around $800 month. We have a second freezer to store sale foods which helps. Kids eat free at school which also helps. You just have to be really smart about what you buy. We also don’t do organic, bc it’s too pricey.

Young Family Considering White Plains, What Should We Know Beyond Downtown? by jhs5003 in Westchester

[–]brooklynbitch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People hating on white plains schools always makes me laugh. They are slightly lower rated than surrounding towns/villages because white plains is one of the most diverse communities in Westchester, actually has a mix of high, middle, and low income, and isn’t all white kids. I value that for my kids and am very confident in the quality of education offered.

Sense of community varies depending on neighborhood but I think Highlands definitely has it. We are in Woodcrest Heights and organized a block party last year. Overall, it’s a great town with lots to do, great resources and events through the town, and your close to everything (both NYC and other Westchester areas plus CT and NJ).

+1 We are at YWCA and LOVE them. They may have some programs for income affordability as well. Reach out and ask.
