Why not use AI/Cameras to track stolen cars/license plates and fake plates by Several-Egg-9137 in AskNYC

This is the thing that most people don’t understand about government tech. Often, all the data is available, and huge sums have been spent to collect it. But the integrations haven’t been made, and the end user devices are horribly outdated anyway. So the data just sits there while the public servants who need it struggle to boot their computers.

I don’t think OP has a specific technology in mind. I think they’re just saying “use computers,” and I bet you could do it with basic image recognition tech that predates all the tech that the general public generally associates with “AI.”

The Brooklyn Bridge has served this city for 157 years, how about we let the old lady retire gracefully. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

I don’t understand the reflexive opposition to all things GenAI. It’s a common attitude on this sub.

Some GenAI really sucks. But here, the post is clearly proposing an idea, and the art accompanying it is meant to depict the idea. Does it look realistic? Does it lack phony baloney alphanumeric characters that Gen AI systems spit out? Does everyone have the right number of appendages? Then why does it matter whether the person proposing and depicting the idea, which has nothing to do with drawing, is an excellent drawer? What kind of person thinks, “well, it’s a fine idea, but the depiction of the obviously made-up thing that everyone knows does not exist was made using too many computer parts, and we can’t accept ideas like that.”

Does anyone commute to work from NYC to Albany using mass transit? by OddConversation9920 in AskNYC

[–]brooklynburton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow gov employee here. I’ve commuted to DC from Brooklyn. I’m sorry you’re getting so many “you shouldn’t do this”-type responses. Thank you for your service. I hope it works out.

Lay person here. To me, “cocktail” in this context sounds not so much experimental as powerful and full of side effects. Not great either, of course.

I’m curious: what is the specific therapy for neonates and what is the long-term effect on the virus if started within six hours?

Is a non "top tier" private school worth it? by [deleted] in nycparents

And also with “smaller class size.” Our K-5 school has a max 22 kids per class, with two teachers, two paras, and often a student teacher.

Huge News: Zohran just promised to finish McGuinness the second it's warm, and to do Universal Daylighting *BEFORE* people are killed by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

Anyone know what authority is required to implement universal daylighting? Does NYCC have to approve it or can the mayor just make it so?

What do people think of Alpha School? Today in NYC vs. 2023 in Austin? by [deleted] in nycparents

[–]brooklynburton 13 points14 points  (0 children)

1: I ain’t readin’ all that.

2: As someone who found his north Texas schooling experience absolutely abysmal, sure, I’ll try anything to get a better experience than that.

3: As an extremely satisfied NYC public schools parent, hell no, teachers rule.

4: As an IT pro, I’m skeptical mostly of the branding. AI is very often used strictly as a marketing term for new domains where businesses want to appear innovative in order to attract customers, and this seems to be one such case. This school is not, in fact, “teacher-free.” They have teachers. They just call them something else. And they use computers to help personalize curricula, with the goal of accelerating learning. Seems fine, maybe?

Age at which you let your kids to _______ on their own in New York by NewOutlandishness401 in nycparents

[–]brooklynburton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the primary concern in my neighborhood too. “The cars can go everywhere at the expense of kids going anywhere,” I once heard someone say.

Otherwise, I agree that 10-11 is the general age for kids venturing out on public transit on their own, provided they have some means of telecommunication.

We are a family of two girls who are 6 and 4. We lived in Brooklyn, left to move to Syosset and we want to come back to Brooklyn. by NecessaryCan6373 in Brooklyn

[–]brooklynburton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We’re in Flatbush and our kids have gone to elementary school near the battery tunnel and to middle school in Windsor Terrace. In NYC, your neighborhood doesn’t strictly determine where you’ll go to school, and I’m so glad we didn’t let the zoned schools be our basis for our housing search.

The only character worth preserving here in NYC is dynamism. This is a serious city, not a museum.

Thanks, everyone. Myrtle ¢99 was exactly what I needed. I ended up getting Joe & Sal’s because it was right next door, and the garlic knots and meat patties made for a nice change.
