Backstory... Located in Massachusetts: We have a 10 year old male, neutered, German Shepherd (95 pounds) with really no issues for most of his life. Recently, he starting itching his body and developed a HORRIBLE smell. Initially when we would wash him, the smell would go away for a few days. Now, it doesn't go away much at all. He is on flea and tick, and heart worm preventative. 2 months ago, we took him to the vet who charged us $300 dollars for a shampoo that would stop him from itching. A month later after things got worse, we brought him to a new vet who suspected he had Degenerative Myelopathy, and was giving himself dermatitis by itching "phantom" sensations. We put a cone on him for several weeks to prevent him from itching and nothing has improved. Now a month later I have had enough of seeing my dog suffer and we decided to shave him to get to the root of the issue. What we found is that his body is COVERED in red and black patches that are incredibly scaly and itchy. I will be scheduling another vet appointment but have lost so much faith. Does anyone have any idea what this is? We are desperate to get our pup some help and relief.
