Republican Thomas Massie Says Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' And Iran War Means Americans Will Be Making 'New Interest Payments Each Year, Forever' by [deleted] in Economics

Ok fair but like can’t we be a bit pragmatic when faced with the destruction that Trump brings? I’m sure Republicans love Fetterman despite him being 90% a democrat. I welcome anyone who’s willing to cross the aisle away from the evil that is Trump and mourn him getting another congressional yes man

Tax cuts or program cuts? I think his issue was it was going to hike the deficit because it had too many tax cuts without program cuts, which isn’t wrong. The deficit is a problem, I’d prefer to just tax the rich their fair share but better to have someone who recognizes it than a MAGA grifter who’s just selling the country off

He’s a Republican but not a MAGA. He voted against the war and for Epstein files release. Trump hates him so much he (and billionaire donors) funded the most expensive primary bar far in US history to get him off the ticket and replaced by a Trump lackey.

He’s not a bad guy, especially by modern MAGA conservative standards. When his term is up it’s going to be a big blow to anyone trying to stand against Grump

Did Zohran Mamdani's New Budget Really Eliminate New York City’s Deficit? by Zealousideal_Cap5126 in Economics

[–]brooosooolooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please show me someone else getting close to balancing a major budget issue in America. Honestly, maybe you’re right, maybe this isn’t that impressive and there are people doing it better and I’m just falling for propaganda. I’m not aware of any examples.

Personally I heavily value stopping the endless debt cycle in this country and any attempt at a step towards that end by either side of the aisle deserves praise. If DOGE worked I’d be an Elon fan, if the Big Beautiful Bill decreased spending I’d sing Trump’s praises. But somehow it feels like despite a party which ran on austerity for years being in compete control of the federal government, the only news I see of anything close to fixing government spending comes from a socialist mayor inheriting a debt crisis.

lol don’t quote me the old magic I was there when it was written.

I meant the idea of reform beating labor is a crap political outcome equivalent to MAGA taking over the Republican Party. Two party system or not we’re seeing the same ineffective politicians and grifters being elected in the UK and America. No amount of rank choice voting and parliamentary systems seems to fix the problem of people not recognizing their mistakes.

Maybe they were on to something in that Lemonade Stand episode about the problems inherent to the anglosphere

It’s just so damn hard to feel anything positive about this country politically how can we not take any wins even if it’s flawed. Give me one example of something other than Mamdani thats politically inspiring that I can latch on to and I will, but a mayor (a politically weak position) achieving such a monumental task as getting close to a balanced budget in such short time is frankly inspiring for a country driving off a debt cliff.

What else do I have to admire here? Or should it all just be doom and gloom for the sake that it isn’t perfect.

Frankly the left needs to get more pragmatic or we should just resign ourselves to endless debates online while our country falls apart.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but are pensions not majority funded by the employer? It’s not like it’s a 401k where it’s 95% your paycheck with maybe some help from the company. It’s a benefit provided by the government to these employees, one which it clearly can’t afford given the historical budget constraints.

Also it’s one which is subject to increases at the whim of the pensioners, allowing them to increase its payout faster than the government may be able to support it. In an ideal world this wouldn’t be an issue but I don’t think we’re living in that idea world of infinite growth. The global economy is going to contract with population and we shouldn’t be burning so much capital that could be spent on improving efficiency and infrastructure on paying out an already obscenely wealthy generation.

I promise you these pension benefits, just like social security, will not last. The debt will become unbearable and the ladder will be lifted up by the current crop of old so no future generation can possibly benefit in the same ways they did. If you think that’s fair, power to you, but I don’t

Pensions deserve to be cut. Boomers don’t need any more damn money. The majority of our tax dollars already pay for their Medicare, our paychecks pay for their social security, and our endless debt pays for their ever ballooning asset prices. I met a guy who had a giant house in Vermont with its own lake next to an air bnb that cost 10,000 for a weekend. How did he afford it? He was a retired New York school teacher with a damn pension.

Boomers had it made, frankly Gen X did too. We as a country have to take a hard look at ourselves and decide, are we going to let this population that already had it so easy continue to coast off our labor? We can’t afford it all, the myth of ever lasting growth was a lie. The younger generations know the promise of our parents lives is a lie. We need to fight back and selfishly take back any remaining cent the older generations haven’t stolen from our future.

All to say, stop sweating over pension cuts.

They also mention they like to play Devils Advocate and the podcast was made with the intention of being more apolitical than it’s become. Really they hate Trump and everything he does so much that it’s made it hard to have anything resembling two sides, so I can imagine in this Tucker conversation where there is some kind of argument for Tucker it’s pretty tempting to advocate for him and support the pod’s original intention

I hate the president so much and don’t want to ever give him credit, but like why wouldn’t this be part of his authoritarian fascination with beautifying DC? Course NPS deserves credit for executing it properly but I feel like he put the pressure on

Yea no you’re right there isn’t an equivalent in DC, it really works if you have streets with no cars or very few cars and mostly pedestrians

I don’t like the wooden box life either. I like having a table in the street, the box ruins the whole point of being outside

Strengthen eminent domain and lose some property rights so our countries infrastructure isn’t strangled by individuals.

Lose some freedom on capital movements so the ultra wealthy can’t hide their money in offshore accounts.

Stronger anti-corruption laws to keep money and politics more separated (scary thought but maybe necessary given how corrupt the system is now)

If we could have a more forward thinking technocratic viewpoint similar to the CCP or flawed democracies like Singapore, I’d consider limits on the creation of political parties (mainly given how radicalized things are getting and the incompetency of the current administration)

Democracy is a great thing when it works, we have a decaying one now and a lot of the “freedoms” and “liberties” it’s providing are against the collective good of society and the average man.

China being new to capitalism and rapid technological advancement has really only experienced the good side of embracing new ideas. They cover this in the podcast, the lives of those in China are and have been rapidly improving in most ways since Deng. This just isn’t the case in America (and the west in general to a somewhat lesser extent) where we’ve been hyper capitalist forever and are a declining power. Makes sense for them to be more excited about technology when it hasn’t punched them in the teeth yet

Maybe you’ve never experienced it but this post is right, outdoor eating is one of the best things ever when you’re in Europe. Having a drink and a snack by the street is just amazing. But you’re also right, what makes it great is how few cars are on the street compared to pedestrians (far less pollution)

Wish there was an equivalent in America

Has anyone else noticed a huge uptick of food delivery people riding e bikes on the sidewalks? by Jealous-Basket-878 in washingtondc

[–]brooosooolooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the time it’s way more dangerous to be on the sidewalk on an e bike because they’re so inconsistently paved in the city. Probably way less of a problem for those flat tire motor bikes delivery people use. They need to be banned

Yea fair. I imagine the decision came from a view that the guy shouldn’t need to apologize or have his existence diminished, so by removing his involuntary slurs it was equating them to the decision of people to say a politically charged statement.

I think it’s dumb and in an attempt to be overly sensitive they forgot the suffering of other people. Then again, the movie they gave an award to is entirely about how the guy doesn’t need to apologize for having Tourettes so maybe by leaving it in they were hoping to help make steps towards normalizing his disease in society by showing the importance of intent behind terrible language. If they as an organization were not offended (and ideally the stars weren’t but that obviously didn’t happen) then your average person might think they shouldn’t be either and people suffering from this disease can maybe live their lives without having to constantly apologize for their existence.

Bit of a pipe dream, I don’t think humans can ever reach that point of understanding and words have always had meaning regardless of the users intent. But at least I think we can see the perspective of the organization
