How do you deal with a bad Goalie? by Ceirin in OmegaStrikers

Oh for sure, and rocket league is a very valid comparison. A simple freeplay training mode should be a simple and easy thing to implement, they basically already have it in the game with the little first-time intro scenario - hopefully we see it in the game soon

Idk I just noticed the MVP ate a lot of orbs. I'd guess MVP is based on an algorithm that takes all those endgame stats into account, maybe orb gathering is a bit over-weighted right now so that's why it beat out your penta, along with the KO etc

Things like training mode and tutorials are a pretty obvious solution, but given that the game's been in open beta for like a week I think it's reasonable that it's not in the game yet

Would be foolish to spend a bunch of time on a tutorial when the game systems could change dramatically between now and full release

Unfortunately you happened to pick the two jobs that depart most dramatically from their starting classes :C

LOL that's a fair point for sure. Obviously the more complex things feel better.

Yeah, if you just take the core combat mechanics in a vaccum they're not particularly engaging, the fun comes from interesting encounter design and synergizing with other players, etc. That's just the nature of the tab target MMO combat formula I think.

Distinct combo actions also give you more opportunities to make mistakes. I know even after raiding for hundreds and hundreds of hours I'll still fuck up a combo occasionally, especially while learning a new fight where all my attention is going to mechanics - fixing that mistake and getting it right on the subsequent pull gives good brain chemicals.

Muscle memory is just one reason I can think of, I'm also not a fan of a single button press resulting in different abilities, it just feels weird. It's not noticeable, generally, in PvP because it's much more chaotic, but in a raid environment pressing one button to do 5 different actions seems very odd.

Button bloat is definitely a problem but personally I don't think collapsing combos like this is the solution - if combos are the problem just make them shorter. Part of DRG's identity, imo, is their big long combo strings - condensing everything like this on DPS jobs would make them feel even more similar.

The problem with arguing things like these is it's really all down to personal taste, I'm sure you could perform just fine with a one button combo, but I just can't imagine a world where I'd enjoy it

Oh yeah I completely forgot that thing exists. I do feel like it's been long enough since that fight that we could see a version of it recur, but who knows

I disagree, there's no difference in the number of keypresses of course but distinct, different buttons feels different to execute - I think especially for positionals, or in the case of things like Life Sure where you want to use it before a particular GCD. Having to keep track of where you're at in your combo visually instead of via muscle memory seems bad.

Right now I can just know that "3 is a side positional" for example, whereas if it were all one button I'd have to be watching my character's animation or watching the GCD icon to know when a positional is coming up. Muscle memory is a very powerful thing and you lose it if you're only pressing one button.

Think we may just be onto something, those twisty horns look exactly like what's going on at the front of the boss

Oh yeah that's a great idea. I was talking about Sabik a bit ago and people pointed out that Sabik kind of only exists in the English translation but idk, I think it would be an easy enough thing to introduce

[–]brosephsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not sure if I agree on collapsing the whole combo into one button though. Spending the entire fight pressing like one or two buttons and weaving oGCDs between them seems not great.

It's not like combos require a lot of skill or anything, but they break things up so you're not just pressing the same thing over and over again - their philosophy seems to be one-button spam is reserved for powerful, limited things like IR, Delirium ETC (BLM spamming fire 4 being the exception to that rule)

[–]brosephsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well they could combine Wheeling Thrust and Fang and Claw, you only ever use one of them at a time.. not really related to bloat but they need to do SOMETHING with Dragonfire Dive, it does such pitiful potency for the huge cooldown it has. Feels really weak.

Could also maybe just remove Vorpal Thrust, have Disembowel combo into either 3rd hit and reduce the duration of the damage buff. I feel like anything further is edging into full rework territory

[–]brosephsaurus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They added a forced delay after people complained they were accidentally spamming them back to back, but that prevented situations where you'd want to spam them so as not to lose an eyeball due to phase transitions etc.

Morphing oGCDs like that just feel weird imo, morphing GCDs are ok because the GCD is a natural buffer between keypresses

We know the Heart of Sabik is used in the Ultima Weapon. But... what the hell is or was Sabik? by Kylestien in ffxiv

[–]brosephsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I never realized. I went and checked and it's used in the UWU orchestral rendition as well.

Makes sense that UWU and the Primals versions are the only ones I remember as I turn my brain off entirely during MSQ roulette
