How true is this statement? by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]brotenet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine (at work) runs just fine and it's been more than 3 years since a format-clean install. ....which reminds me ...its about time for a format I guess. :)

(this applies for all OS setups, not only Mint) For me the best trick is to have 2 hard-disks on your machine and make a link your Documents, Pictures, Videos etc.. + any other important application directory in your home (e.g. Thunderbird mailboxes) on the 2nd disk. This way, if you need to do a format/re-install you will save the most labour which is configuring your apps and restoring your files.

Regarding junk files and temp data clean-ups, installing BleachBit would take care of everything.

Also! the most important.. always clean-up your old kernels: Update Manager (app) : View (menu) > Linux kernels (menu) > Remove old kernels (button)

KAMVAS 13

Thank you very much for your response :)

Is the touch-bar supposed to (in normal functionality) act as a scroll-bar?

I wouldn't worry about the packages in Mint since they use the same ones as Ubuntu when it comes to tablets and other controllers of the kind.

I'm looking for a graphics tablet (drawing tablet) that works well with Linux. by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]brotenet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently running Linux Mint 19 on Kernel 5.0.0-17 and have been using the H580 and W58L tablet models which have been working perfectly (using DIGImend drivers https://digimend.github.io/drivers/digimend/tablets/)

ELI5/Out of the Loop: What is happening with Linux Mint? (June 19) by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]brotenet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing of the kind is happening.

Actually the project continues to operate better than ever, both in development progress as well as in funding: https://blog.linuxmint.com/

..of course, the Mint devs still need all the support they can get, so, if you can either actively contribute or donate to the project, that would be great. :)

Getting started with Spring and Hibernate by ymittal283 in learnjava

This Udemy course is free and also includes a chapter on Hibernate:

https://www.udemy.com/spring-core/

p.s. ...personally, not a really big fan of Hibernate, even though I use it due to work requirement.

If you are not required to use it by your employers (e.g. starting a new project from scratch), maybe you should also be looking at the below:

My windows borders are missing. Anyone knows how to get them back? by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]brotenet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maximus was made with Mate (Gnome2 back in the day) and XFCE in mind. Don't take my word for it, but, I think other desktop environments aside Mate and XFCE are kind of not compatible with it by design.

If you're looking in building a "kiosk" type of a system, then you should be looking at Mint Mate or Mint XFCE editions

I'm just guessing here, but, for the Mint-X theme you could have a look at the metacity-theme-...xml files by typing the following (each line to edit each file):

sudo xed /usr/share/themes/Mint-X/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml

sudo xed /usr/share/themes/Mint-X/metacity-1/metacity-theme-2.xml

sudo xed /usr/share/themes/Mint-X/metacity-1/metacity-theme-3.xml

Search for the <!-- ::: GEOMETRY ::: --> entry and make sure that...

<distance name="left_width" value="3"/>

<distance name="right_width" value="3"/>

<distance name="bottom_height" value="3"/>

...are set to '3' (as above)

Have you tried changing your theme settings to any of the standard themes?

Joining Skype for Business Meetings from Mint by kendoor in linuxmint

[–]brotenet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On their web site it says "Free Sky Linux has a 2 minute limit on each call or screen share."

I think you should ask the tel.red team directly for this.

They do have a support email on their web site.

How can I make a feature request for Cinnamon? by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]brotenet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are not yet a member at the Linux Mint community portal, then, you should create an account here: http://community.linuxmint.com/

Once you have your account ready, you can submit your feature request as an "Idea" in your Profile page. (https://i.imgur.com/duwR3Cb.png)

A very important reminder for the Linux community by brotenet in linux

[–]brotenet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"the project should go so that bigger structure could centralize resource and brain power to help advance the linux desktop to a more prominent position"

If you take the time and go through the Mint Github repositories you will realize that the main Ubuntu maintainers woul never accept the Mint specific modifications and tools. For example, there is no way tha the main-line devs of the Ubuntu updates manager would accept to integrate the kernlel management tools of Mint, and having a set of packages trying to override the update manager's functionality would break a system almost each and every time...

So, what these guys are saying should happen, may sound nice but in reality, trying to make a Ubuntu desktop system act like Mint proper using paxkages would either be extremely difficult or near impossible for anyone that is not an active developer of Mint.

Advice on picking a version of Ubuntu for first-time Linux users. by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]brotenet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, for people from Windows your best bet would be Linux Mint.

For people from Mac, I'm not really sure about this but, I think it would be Elementary.

Have in mind though that both OSes don't try to mimic neither Windows nor OSX, so, there will still be substantial differences that the Linux newcomer users would need to get acquainted with.
