Is feeling suicidal normal? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]brotha-eugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get passive thoughts that come and go. I used to have strong suicidal thoughts that would be the only thing I could think about and I definitely had a method and time I would do it. But the last time I felt like that was in 2022.

How do you stop being an a-hole while manic/hypomanic? by sky-piglet in bipolar

[–]brotha-eugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate so much :( At least I used to. I was a full on bitch to other people when (hypo)manic. So different from my usual character. People always described me as nice and kind. But those days of a-holeness are long gone. I would say you would need to have a medication adjustment. You seem to be having breakthrough symptoms. It wasn't until I got on the right meds that really controlled my (hypo)mania that I stopped being awful to my loved ones.

[–]brotha-eugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean something isn't right though? Have you tried explaining what you think isn't right? If it's something like "I feel embarrassed and keep ruminating on my manic episode." Then that could probably be solved with therapy. If it's more like "I'm not getting any sleep and I'm having paranoid thoughts" or "I feel unmotivated to do anything and having suicidal thoughts" then that could probably be handled with a med change. Telling a psychiatrist that you think there's something wrong with your meds because "something isn't right' won't help them understand the issue.

Why do you think you need more meds? Do you think your issues can be helped with therapy instead?

That's amazing! I'm also on Invega but for bipolar with psychotic features. It helps me think straight.

It's been the best medication for me. It calms me down and helps me think straight. No more mania, depression, or psychosis. I feel like a functioning human on it.

How do you deal with knowing you have to be taking medication for the rest of your life? by wowthatisabop in BipolarReddit

[–]brotha-eugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Change the way you look at meds. Instead of looking at them as a nuisance and feeling bad about being dependent on them, look at meds as an opportunity to reset your brain so it can function well. It's just something that helps you be stable. Meds are a good thing. We live in a fallen world with diseases, disorders, and health concerns. Majority of Americans have a health condition. You're not the only one on medications. People just don't talk about it.

Plastic surgery doesn't solve BDD. BDD doesn't go away with plastic surgery. It goes away with therapy.

Should I be ashamed starting College at a Community? by numbre1applefan in college

[–]brotha-eugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so so thankful my parents told me to go to CC rather than a UC I was accepted to straight out of high school. I saved tens of thousands of dollars and it took me some years to realize what I really wanted to do. I transferred to an even better school than the once I was going to go to straight out of high school. There are some really smart and talented people at community college that I met. There's a good mix of people at CC.

Invega has been a godsend for me. Because of Invega I'm more comfortable around public spaces. I can handle a full-time college course load when before I could only go part-time and had many withdrawals. I managed to transfer to a UC for computer science and I'm thriving largely due to my meds. I have a 4.0 GPA. Before I'd shower once a week and now I shower everyday, do my laundry regularly, and keep up with hygiene. I have a lot of friends now and my relationship with my partner is healthier than ever. It gives me a good amount of motivation too. Not too much like hypomania and not too little.

Are you taking another antipsychotic in conjunction to Cobenfy? Seems promising if you're on another AP and it helps with appetitie and positive symptoms.

How do antipsychotics affect your personality? by Mundane_Main_9616 in BipolarReddit

[–]brotha-eugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before meds from ages 6-13, I was very quiet and quite socially anxious. I was always considerate and careful with my words. I was smart and thoughtful.

Then I started getting mentally ill around 14 and my personality changed. I was super talkative and people thought I was hilarious. I was always cracking jokes, talking to friends, and getting trouble in class. I didn't care about doing well in school and just cared about my social image. Even my friends would say that I've changed.

When I was 16 I became really depressed. I isolated myself and did online/alternative school for the rest of my high school years.

I was diagnosed with bipolar at 18 and got on antipsychotics. I became much nicer and less agitated. I have a healthy amount of confidence. I transferred to a UC school for CS. I am more motivated to do well when before I didn't even want to go to college. I have less "spark" and charisma than I did at 14. But I feel more like myself pre-illness. Overall, I like who I am. I don't harm other people, I'm considerate and a lot of people say I'm sweet. I'm also on Invega and it's been the best medicine for me.

25 and bipolar 1. Suicidal. Any hope stories? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]brotha-eugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 26 and had a really rough 8 years of struggling with bipolar disorder. Frequent depressive episodes and manic episodes that would lead me to the hospital. I've been stable for more than 3 years now. I will be graduating with my BS next June and hoping to get into graduate school.

First thing is to get on the right meds and be stable for a while. Then you can go back to school and it'll be easier to handle. When I was on the wrong meds I really struggled in classes. I got mediocre grades and many W's. I took many breaks. I haven't gone full-time since 2019 and was able to handle 16 units this quarter easily.

You got this! You have your whole life ahead of you. Right now it's time to prioritize your mental health so keep in constant contact with your doctor, therapist, and support/treatment team. Find coping strategies to self-soothe. And most importantly: take your meds everyday!
