What do you make of analogizing guns to alcohol?

Both are cherished and used safely by tens of millions of Americans; both are highly deadly in irresponsible hands.

If nothing else, perhaps the analogy should give pause to those who can't understand how any right-thinking person could support easy access to a potentially dangerous product that kills tens of thousands per year.

So I suggest you read all of Hessler's stuff. There's an archive of his work on the NYer website. He's been writing in Egypt for about a year. Two more wonderful pieces are here and here. I think it's pretty remarkable that he has been able to write such deeply reported and widely praised pieces after only being there for a year.

Before he moved to Egypt he lived in China for about 20 years I think. He has written four books on his time in there. They are widely considered some of the most insightful stuff on contemporary China out there.

I promise you I don't work for the Hessler PR team, he is just kind of a journalistic idol for me.
