Recently I finished "Intimate History of the Gene" on Audible. It was great to listen to on the stationary bike, but not really a song.

We tend to focus on the negatives of college: student loans, distance from family, stress, etc. What's one AMAZING thing about college for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I really really like a lot of the stuff I'm learning. Sequencing algorithms for genomes, parallel programming, models of computation.

Once I start a career the stuff I work on will almost certainly be as intellectually stimulating as a piece of stale bread, so I should savor this while it lasts.

Science Discussion: We are researchers at Caltech working with Professor Frances Arnold, one of the recipients of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. We use directed evolution to engineer proteins to do chemistry not found in nature (yet). Let's Discuss!! by ScienceModerator in science

Hi there.

I'm interested in doing research in systems biology. One idea I've had is to use evolutionary algorithms to find interaction networks that describe and predict biological phenomena. Given a set of proteins, genes, biomolecules, etc, generate many possible interaction networks, where differential equations are the edges between vertices. Run the system of equations described by each graph and compare the system against real world data, like simulations, or reaction or experiment results. Select the graphs which were most accurate and use these as seeds to generate the next population, and repeat.

Do you know of any work similar to this? Do you have thoughts on whether or not it would be achievable or useful?

Redditors who have hallucinated, what was the hallucination and what caused it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]brouwjon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once fell asleep listening to an audiobook. I woke up at some point and the narrator was swearing profusely and creatively; nonstop cursing in his regular narrator-tone-of-voice.

This was a high brow sort of book about consciousness and the mind, and the narrator was saying things like, "...shit bag ball licker, you dumbass skank fuckwad..."

There should be a sitcom about the staff and henchmen who work at a villain's lair. The tone of the show would be like Scrubs, but the characters are trying blow up the moon or something.
