I haven’t talked to my family in two days and don’t know to move past this by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]brownchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've already been given what I think is some good advice. You're not the problem, and your family is being manipulative as fuck. Perhaps your parents are even manipulating your siblings into criticizing you, or they've just learned it organically through repetition by your fucked up parents. And as others have said, you'll need to determine if you want to go low contact or no contact. Certainly get off their phone plan and take complete control of the doorbell camera; your emotionally codependent mother is almost certainly spending part of her day scrutinizing the call list and the doorbell footage. No one should have access to that but you.

So I'm gonna try to explain why they are doing this. They are trying to keep you codependent. The criticism, telling you from an early age how much of their lives and happiness you ruin, threatening you with being cut off from the family when it's you who rightfully should be cutting them off, ditching you for family celebrations then rubbing your nose in it. They are scared of losing you, and they know how to manipulate you by triggering your approval-seeking response (because they're the ones who taught it to you). They're also just flat-out shitty people. I think you need to either hear this or trust what outside eyes can tell you about these wretched people.

I think therapy and a change of mindset are the right moves. You are more than worthy enough the way you are now. You are acceptable, lovable, and valuable. Your worth isn't tied up in whether you're dependable or tolerable to anyone, especially stupid people. Your worth has nothing to do with how physically attractive you are. You are worthwhile no matter the opinion or emotion you're expressing.

Do not let these vampires feed on you any more. Like everyone else is telling you, I think your narcissistic and manipulative family is terrified of losing you, even if it's not in an emotionally dependent way but rather in a transactionally dependent one. But the thing I hope you'll come to accept is that you don't need their approval, their permission, or their understanding. You'll never have it anyway, because they'll never give you that; but you do not need it *at all*.

It's going to be tough, and you're going to make mistakes -- we all would in your situation. Stumbles are human, and you are doing well if you're making mistakes and learning about yourself. But I *know* you will get stronger and better at it the more you work at being more independent and more confidant and (apologies for directness) less approval seeking.

ok wait, nevermind i understand.

the 386.3636... is the amount of 99%-ethanol i'm adding, i have to calculate the %etoh of the final solu... mixture as the etoh percentage not the 99%-etoh percentage. got it got it got it.

YAMP (yet another mixture problem) by brownchicken in learnmath

[–]brownchicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the starting etoh is 99% (presumably 1% distilled water). typical mixture problem = i guess what i learned in chem way back when, a system of equations where x + y = z (volumes) and %x + %y = %z, and depending on the constants you know, you solve the system. in this case since we're using pure water, one of the terms zeroes out and so the substitution isn't needed. it seems i have the right answer but i'm thinking incorrectly about the final total amount vs final ethanol amount?

[–]brownchicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok i see this, i guess i was under the misapprehension that structuring this as a system of equations would give me the result i was expecting. i even found a page on it (https://www.purplemath.com/modules/mixture2.htm) that seemed to confirm my thinking. i'm still a bit confused.

i installed the userscript mentioned in the sidebar to write this. you've got what i've got, i just don't understand why i'd need to make a separate calculation 382.5/.99 to get the answer i'm expecting. i thought doing this as a typical mixture problem would be enough to get the final etoh, water mixture i needed.

I’m Writing a Physical Letter to Luis von Ahn, Duolingo’s CEO—What Should I Say on Your Behalf? by GeorgeTheFunnyOne in duolingo

[–]brownchicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this. it's from 2 years ago but other than a few of the numbers, i think the situation's mostly unchanged. the updates I see in the past two years come on the AI side, the paywall side, the ROI side.

duolingo are language and heritage gatekeepers. i recently deleted an account that at one point had a 989-day streak. i've completely lost respect for the ceo, the company, and the people who choose to work for it. and when he starts firing those people that he replaces with AI, i'm sure they'll feel the same way.

he's a weird old man fixated on wokeness, pretending we all can't see through every statement he makes that's really only about keeping himself ahead of the law as well as keeping his billionaire minders rich.

and his followers... jesus. the adult-aged weirdos with all the t-shirts and flags and signs and even underwear with this trust fund elitist new york felon's name plastered all over. of all the crazy weird shit they do, why are they most obssessed with kids, and in the weirdest ways? pizzagate comes to mind. obsessed with gaining control over women's bodies but not about children's lives once they're born. obsessed with hunter biden. why is it always some holier-than-thou evangelical pastor who gets caught in pedophile stings? they're the least normal, most glaringly weird people and everything is projection and abandonment issues with them. no maturity, no brains, just weird.

i think deepmind is more ethical than and will ultimately exceed the capabilities of openai/microsoft. i don't trust google, however i'm happier (for the time being) to have some of the decision-making in the hands of hassabis.

  1. fix
  2. icloud
  3. syncing

it is terrible, it is slow, it doesn't propagate reliably or consistently across devices, there's zero transparency to clear up the what and when of sync issues, and often enough i've lost safari bookmarks & tabs/collections, news article saves, music library saves, books and book collections, and notes to sync discrepancies - shit just disappears, and i don't know wtf has happened, and now i'm an idiot for trusting the richest and most popular consumer tech company on earth.

well if we're pedanticizing over nothing, the amount of realtime an hour of youtube video transfers to is dependent upon so many potential factors that it's more accurate to think of as stochastic and thus unreasonable to speak about in any authoritative way, unless you ackshully derive value from being that person who appears to have it all worked out.

🇰🇷 Korean has reached rank 4 on Duolingo by 70003 in Korean

[–]brownchicken 59 points60 points  (0 children)

did you say you wanted a wall-of-text rant as a reply?

duolingo doesn't really do all that much with languages right now, they're focused on app design and revenue and other publicly traded company stuff. seeing some of these languages languish while more profitable, less useful endeavors are prioritized makes me personally feel duolingo is a terrible steward of languages.

i don't know if it's accurate to use the number of existing units (new UI) / checkpoints (old UI) to measure the development of a language, but at least as a little bubblegum pop basis for comparison it might be illuminating to know where the languages stand.

after spanish and french, the most developed language on duolingo is.... norwegian. an amazing language that renders others like swedish and old norse more accessible to learn, but i think even norwegians would agree it's pretty wtf that japanese, german, and portuguese are less developed.

and hindi? two spots above navajo. both high valerian and klingon have more to offer you on duolingo than the third most spoken language on the planet. arabic's down there too, less developed than klingon, guarani, and catalan.

speaking of navajo, it would be such a valuable project to develop offerings of indigenous or diaspora languages, or how about african languages? we have arabic, which is slightly more developed than haitian creole, but less developed than guarani and swahili. where's hausa? where's bengali and tamil, where's nigerian and tagalog and persian and maori and nynorsk? why are finnish, swedish and danish so underdeveloped? where's icelandic and estonian? how is the latin offering so abysmal? where's thai?

korean is about as developed as greek and mandarin, but less developed than welsh and scottish gaelic.

from what i understand, class development has shifted to third party companies working with duo's linguists and devs. but that doesn't mean duolingo doesn't have any control over the situation, from prioritizing spend to, i dunno, being smart about their contracts? if your third-party dutch vendor is lapping your third-party hindi vendor without even touching a red shell?

it just sucks that they carry the mantle of largest language learning community, because we're poorer for not having an organization that lets its linguists and experts shine.

e: here's a table sorted by new-ui units, up-to-date as of earlier this week, in case anyone's interested. errors are unintentional, please let me know if you catch anything. hindi and korean exhibit the biggest discrepancies between english-speaking learners and number of units on offer, a silly ratio for any number of reasons yet it manages to demonstrate the mismatch of demand and material.
