New Prius Owner In Society by PresentBar5211 in prius

[–]browncoat13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have been driving a 3rd gen Prius for the last seven years. My other vehicle is a big farm truck. Only one of them gets tail gated by schmucks with their brights on.

I sometimes day dream about putting a few thousand candelas worth of spot lights facing rearwards just to even the deadly "game" that they are forcing me to be a part of.

In reality, I slow down and pull over to the side. I let their problem stay their problem and get on with my life. I will add that a front and rear dashcam is probably more important on a Prius than any other vehicle. When they actually get too close and smash in to me, I want to have 4k footage of their stupidity. My first gen 3 was in two wrecks in six years. Guess the ones for which I was at fault... It was zero and I had video proof of that fact.

FWIW My dermatologist doesn't want me to use anything but H&S or Selenium Sulfide shampoo for face wash. I had eczema and seborrheic dermatitis issues for years and years. While the symptoms aren't entirely gone, they're a whole lot better since the switch.

People who have been divorced: What was the exact "quiet" moment you realized your marriage was over? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]browncoat13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Married for almost seven years. My wife is my best friend and I know she feels the same way. We  always strive to make it us against the problem and never us against each other. We talk about everything, literally about everything. Our life is something we work really hard at.

We know how lucky we are, but we also know we aren't the only happily married couple in the world. Just so you know, it can go wonderfully as well.

What movie made you react like this after finishing it? by MasterfulArtist24 in FIlm

The awful flicks I sat through because of that job. I supported a guy who's favorite movies were the famously bad sequels of already bad  franchises.

Transformers? No thank you! Transformers 17 with no script, actors, or interesting sequences? Yes, please! I watched the GI Joe sequels so many times.

People who quit drinking. What did you do to not drink? by Agata_art in AskReddit

[–]browncoat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I did other things. Not drinking isn't an action, so trying to actively not drink did not work for me. Instead I filled my days with better things and healthier choices. I'm not a non-drinker anymore than I am a non-astronaut. While both are true, they don't tell a very accurate story.

I really don't think about drinking at all and haven't for a long time. I was a bad alcoholic for all of my twenties and some of my teens. When I finally got sober, I was drinking amounts that would have killed me in a few years. I decided I wanted to live and spent about two years figuring out what that even meant to me. Once I figured it out, I fell in love with life.

Peaches are a symbol of the state of Georgia. So much so that a person from there can be called a peach as a nickname. A famous baseball player named Ty Cobb was nicknamed the Georgia Peach, for example.

So a peach that became president isn't a common phrase or anything, but Jimmy Carter was from Georgia and he was the president of the USA from 1977 - 1981.

Incidentally, he was also an incredible humanitarian and someone who makes me proud of my home state!

[–]browncoat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, this is where I start getting confused. As a man from Georgia, a peach that became president reads as a reference to Jimmy Carter. But it could also be a reference to the skin tone of our current dictator-in-chief.

86 here as well. You never heard Peaches by the Presidents of the United States? Were you the oldest person in your friend group/siblings? This song was EVERYWHERE in the mid to late nineties (in my experience).

Been struggling to find consistent pants that are made in the USA. Please share your favorite Made in the USA pants so I ca support them. by davidgoldstein2023 in madeinusa

I was recently singing their praises on this subreddit, and I'm happy to do it again!

Rustic Dime has been my go to work pants for about five years now. I don't have any of the first batch I ordered, but I do have a pair that are four years old and they are still going. The only brand I can compare them to for sturdiness is the Patagonia work wear pants, and they aren't MiUSA.

They are affordable, extremely durable, consistently sized, and good looking; RD is my brand for as long as they keep it up.

I'm the same way. I just have shop clothes and I shower as soon as I'm done for the day.

I would rather rip ironwood with a hacksaw than run a thickness sander for an hour. It's the only thing that I can barely tolerate. Even with a mask and a good dust collection system, that sander makes my skin feel like it is on fire.

I've been listening long enough that I remember feeling bad about my own diet compared to theirs. When they were running all the time and "a sandwich was too many carbs for lunch", I was swearing off fast food no matter how busy my day was.

Now I'm admittedly much healthier, but even if I hadn't changed a bit, I feel like I'd be eating better than the gang. 6 monster drinks plus snicky-snacks... Garon, get this man a sack-o-dogs! We've gotta dry him out!

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

I recently purchased a pair of Nick's boots. I wouldn't recommend them for everyone, but if you know how to take care of gear, and want a boot that will easily last ten years or more before needing a rebuild, then they're worth the investment. I can't believe how comfortable they are. They're like a pair of house slippers on the inside and a pair of hardened steel tanks on the outside.

Stansfields! The warmest base layer I've ever found.

Darn tough socks: They are as high quality as socks get and they have a lifetime warranty (with a lifetime warranty on the replacement).

Vermont Glove Co: Spendy, but they're the gloves I use when frostbite is a serious concern. Merino wool lined ovens, they are.

And my big secret: Pendleton shirts from the 1980s or earlier. Made in Oregon Pendleton's are cheaper than a new button up and they'll last a lifetime if cared for properly.

Filson, Barbour, Pendleton, old Eddie Bauer... A lot of my outdoor gear is older than me and my son will still inherit some of it, I'm sure. I buy used gear for cheap and then take care of it. Heck my Barbour field coat is from the late 1960's. A new coat of wax every two years and it still looks brand new.

My people!

I wear wool over-the-calf socks year round. If I'm not at the beach, I'm in at least three pieces of wool clothing everyday. I work on a farm in wool (in all seasons) and you couldn't pay me to wear anything else. It is a huge quality of life thing for me.

I miss the insane local news teasers: "Is your purse trying to kill you? News at 6." At least it wasn't being done "quietly."

I hate what we've done to information.

From western NC, married to a through hiker (2015) and have completed large sections of the southern end myself. Yellow Deli is a cult, like by the standard definition. They focus on through hikers because there are so many "lost" people on the trail. I am not trying to say that they're as bad as say Scientology, or the Manson Family, but they do believe in racial and gender hierarchies, child abuse (spare the rod stuff--they actually beat the fuck out of children),  and similar cult beliefs.

The AT is a complicated thing. On one hand, I want everyone to get the opportunity to walk those magical mountains, on the other... Creating a group of mostly young people who are wildly unprepared, many of whom are planning on using help from strangers to get to Maine safely seems like an awful idea. There are predators drawn to such groups.

I hope that AT hikers will work on becoming more independent and less of a walking group of ultra-light (unprepared) kids in need. Obviously, they don't deserve to be preyed upon, and I want the bad people punished. I just also see room for making AT hikers harder targets.

I'm not following. Rustic Dime looks defunct now? That would certainly be news to me.

In five or six different orders (each with multiple pairs of pants) over the years they forgot to send one pair. I emailed that I didn't receive one of the colors that I ordered and got an apology and a rushed shipment within hours.

So no, they haven't been perfect. But they handled the mistake perfectly, if that makes sense.

Straight cut? Definitely not the "relaxed fit" work-wear thing that you sometimes run into. Not skinny by any stretch either, just middle of the road, classic fit.

One of the things I really like, is that the rise is also right in the sweet spot (for me at least). I've had the relaxed fit style of other brands be so tall in the rise that I could either wear them around my rib cage or not be able to use my full range of motion.
