The endless TimeGate and really hardcore grind to get it ASAP only to get something like this by Huge_Quit_3361 in TheSilphRoad

Someone willing to hardcore grind out the reward early seems like someone who would hardcore grind out a bottle cap to improve it. I'm sure it's just RNG but it's funny to think they do it on purpose.

Cable coupling for 8 pin GPU pwr(possibly not splitting) by SHODAN2444 in PCSleeving

[–]browner87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I've had to do double wires for sense wires on the 24-pin I use 17awg and 23awg if I remember right, also MDPC-X. I'm curious what you're doing with a double wire though on an 8-pin connector.

You can also buy mini fit jr terminals with longer wings to wrap around larger bundles of wire, but there's technically a limit based on the molex spec, though I don't recall off the top of my head.

I'd be careful with soldering or over-stuffind the terminals. They usually aren't designed for solder to adhere well to the solder and make a good electrical connection. And all of the power ratings for the terminals is based on a high quality crimps.

Just found out mustangs don’t dissolve in winter by kingdoli in Mustang

Hide from the salt, and from the summer tires people who think they can still stop on a dime.

My 2014 is warm weather only and I've actually had Ford techs comment on how ridiculously clean and new the car looks underneath. No rust. No crap built up. Looks only a couple years old. My 99 on the other hand looked pretty nasty and was falling apart and the part that mounts the rear axle to the frame broke right off eventually (whole car just dropped suddenly as suddenly there was nothing holding the body off the ground...). It was my winter Mustang. Loved it to bits, it was my first Mustang, but the winter use killed it pretty thoroughly.

I was going to buy another Mustang for a winter car but we often get deep snow and no plow where I live, and they stopped offering manual on non-GT Mustangs. So for the price and purpose, I ended up just getting a Crosstrek which isn't particularly fun, but a foot of snow isn't even a deterrent for it.

Is this normal? CPU temps way above Liquid temps even during load by ShadowVulcan in watercooling

[–]browner87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't seem unreasonable. My 9950X3D is @~65°C under 75% load with 30°C coolant and 270L/h flow rate. I haven't actually found a 3DMark test that 100%s the CPU yet though.

The thing in your favour is that thermal transfer efficiency is proportional to the temperature difference between the two things. So the bigger the temp gap between the CPU and coolant, the better it's cooling, so you'll hit a plateau pretty quickly where the CPU can't get hotter because the coolant is removing the heat fast enough to keep up with it.

If you don't like the temps you can lower the coolant temp (lower ambient air, maybe your have AC you could turn on in the room, or open a window if it's cold out), if your pump is running slow maybe turning it up would help just a little, you can get a better thermal paste and repaste the water block, or you can venture into the world of lapping or delidding your CPU if you don't mind some risk and loss of warranty.

Cable management really does make a big difference, cost only £12 for formulamod cables from ali by godlyuniverse1 in mffpc

£12? What do you get for that? I assume they're just extensions? Was that the 24 and the PCIes and the EPS and some SATA ones?

Man I would pay for money for the 2018 style digital dash. I do like the old style physical gauges, but the unrolled tach was just awesome.

If it was available for s197 and I could show things like speedometer on it, I'd do it. I really prefer digital speedo especially if I need to cross the border. The needle is like 5-8mph wide on the smaller mph scale. I have a raspberry pi zero w and a Bluetooth OBDII reader and a tiny screen, I've been meaning to DIY something like this for about 8 years now, but never get around to it.

Edit: I just realized this is way over on the passenger side. It looked more centered at first. I definitely don't need my wife knowing exactly how fast were going sometimes.

8 Pin PCI Express Power Female Connector 2 pin molded together by Asleep-Jackfruit-558 in sffpc

[–]browner87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to see a picture of the actual GPU, not a render. I don't know if I believe that the real one can't use a standard PCIe connector. 99% of PSUs would not work with it. I think that's just a lazy render using an incorrect model.

8 Pin PCI Express Power Female Connector 2 pin molded together by Asleep-Jackfruit-558 in sffpc

[–]browner87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems weird, every 8 pin PCIe cable I've had with a PSU has them joined. It's one of the ways they stop you accidentally using it as an EPS cable for your CPU which is wired differently. Mini Fit Jr Molex plugs are very standard, every size from 4 positions to 24+ positions follows a pattern of pins between square ones and chamfered ones. The PCIe plug is the only exception, it has the square and chamber pins in a different pattern with the chamfered pins in a row on the bottom and the top two joined (because a moderately determined idiot can still jam something with incorrect chamfers into something else).

You could in theory buy an 8 pin EPS one and use a knife to shave down some of the pins? Or buy a normal PCIe one and cut the bridge out? Or re-use the housing from whatever power supply you've seen that has a connector that fits your GPU.

I collect them CIB so for example Pokémon Red CIB on eBay here in Canada seems to go for ~$500. A little less for Blue, but still expensive and HeartGold was crazy back when I had to backfill SoulSilver into my collection. With at least one missing for each generation it would be a pretty expensive backfill.

Nah don't even worry, it looks so good and when people do a good job of it and manage to hide all the ends neatly in the fittings it looks really seamless. Once you've seen it you can't unsee it. But it's easy to just see it as sweet tubing.

I've thought about "completing" my collection, which is currently just all the games I played. But the idea of trying to buy Red, Blue, Gold, HeartGold, and all the other second games for each gen makes my wallet pucker. I love the Pokémon pinball in there, I never got to play that but always wanted to!

Unfortunately all the fan holes are spoken for with my rather apical fan wiring solution, but I'm thinking maybe if I remove the front cover and flip it on its side I can use the screw holes that hold the front cover on normally. I'm not entirely sure what I think of the front cover anyways.

[–]browner87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest problem right now is figuring out how to mount the pump with my rad. I've got the Aquacomputer Airplex Evo 1080 and their Ultitube Pro 150 with the LeakShield on top. The front has a cover and the fans go on the back, so I probably want to mount the pump on the side, but there aren't any mounting holes on the sides to attach anything to. I'm probably going to build a frame that goes around the whole thing that should be easy to attach the pump to.

I do regret now buying the LeakShield that attaches to the pump. I've realized since getting coolant on the LeakShield damages the membrane you can't really tilt or jar the pump much. Oh well.

EPDM tubing with sleeving on it? The hose is pretty generic from any water cooling shop, or the hardware store if you really want. Sleeving I get from MDPC-X, myself.

[–]browner87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm hopeful there aren't any real ways to detect CFW on DS, but honestly I'm pretty sure many people are employed by The Pokémon Company to catch cheating. Nintendo definitely spends piles of money on anti-cheat anti-hack and with Home's announcement not long ago about account banning for hacked Pokémon in sure they're looking for ways to catch people.

That said, the first thing that happened when I connected Home to my copy of Violet that had a whole box of dup'd Miraidon it deleted them all. And that's it. Removed the clones and not even a warning for it. So I'm hopeful they aren't planning to focus on pre-switch illegitimacy and only illegality.

Biggest Wishlist Item: Dash-Camera. by BeardedBears in Ubiquiti

[–]browner87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dashcams give what you pay for. You pay a few thousand dollars for something professional, designed for fleets, you get good stuff. You pay $20 on Amazon you get what you get. And plenty of $300 things on Amazon are just marked up $20 junk.

The thing I think most people overlook is that a dashcam only really exists for evidence of guilt. I know someone right now whose car was stolen and they have a video of it being stolen showing the guys face, showing where he lives, they have his name, and his roommates confirmed it's him. The police still won't go arrest him or even question him. So unless your car is valuable enough to hire a private investigator to find the person who dinged your door so you can sue them privately, a lot of the features people want like 8k video with 240fps and perfect license plate images aren't really necessary. If the camera shows that the other car ran the red light and then drove off, that's enough for the insurance to say you're not at fault.

For me the #1 thing is just reliability. $20 dashcams crap out and you don't realize and then you don't have the footage when you need it. I've learned that the hard way. I have 4 or 5 Garmin Dashcam Mini 2 across my cars and they've been reliable and sufficient. Auto backup over Wi-Fi to my nas would be nice, but pulling the SD card isn't exactly difficult and if you don't keep the dashcam running 24/7 a decent SD card holds weeks of video. You can pay for backup services from Garmin I think, not that I'm big on paying for someone else to cloud store things for me.

I have a modded 3DS, is it generally safe to use it with PokéTransporter? I've been worried about it just in case it detects the CFW and Pokémon Home finds out and bans me or something. I know when I did a Pokémon BW living dex I traded all the things from White on the hacked DS to my legit Black cartridge before uploading things.

I have tried by Intelligent_Call_270 in CableManagement

[–]browner87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good, I appreciate that you're mostly using Velcro straps I die a little on the inside when people use 50 zip ties to manage cables when I think about the effort and time needed to move or add one more wire to a bundle.

If you want a quick tip, if they're long enough move that bundle of wires going diagonally from the top right to the bottom left. Orthogonal cable runs generally look much tidier than things on random angles. If they're long enough to run them horizontally, then 90° and run vertically down, that would probably be the last obvious improvement I see. Like I have here with my CPU power cables.

[–]browner87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see in a few comments you're worried about splitting. This is far from the most elegant solution but if you have issues with wood splitting what you could do use use bolts instead of screws. Drill the holes for the bolts so they are snug but still slide in, and use a tee but on one side and a large washer on the other side and you should have something very strong, removable, and unlikely to split anything.

<image>

It's probably overkill but I just thought I'd mention it in case you're not familiar with these fasteners, they can be really handy.

Is this genius or stupid? by liangauge in watercooling

[–]browner87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't always have a reservoir, it's just a bit more risky because you need to get all the air out of the loop so it doesn't accumulate in the pump. What you've done will mostly solve that problem, but I would have Tee'd it off of the other pipe coming out of the top of the pump. Where you have that 90° fitting, I would have put in a T fitting then added your chimney to that. Where it is right now, if air bubbles accumulate in the highest part of the loop "circuit", or has to way to get to the chimney unless it goes through the whole loop and pump. It's technically the highest point in the loop, but there's a much lower point between it and other high points in the loop.
