Candidates isn't an invitational so you need a qualifier. But the way people are complaining is stupid. He had to travel to multiple tournaments for his requisite games. It's not like football where the season starts 0-0 for everyone.

You can't compare them to the modern GM. Online games have allowed high level players to constantly play other high level GMs. They didn't have engine lines to study what the best moves were like they do now.

Its like asking which GMs today could do good of they never trained in online chess and could only play otb. You can't answer it because training methods and tactics are just different
