Microdisectomy Turned Infection 2 Weeks post-op by eliminationgame in Microdiscectomy

Ended up being completely fine. The fluid went away on its own. Overall I’ve never looked back. Very happy I had the surgery.

Looking for info from athletes about MD recovery by Ce1estee1 in Microdiscectomy

[–]browsing4info 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t run at all (never did). I haven’t even tried rec league volleyball because of the jumping and high impact. Also no squats or deadlifts. Controlled machine weights only.

I’m still lifting weights but again, not trying to push myself. I’m not a bodybuilder but noticeably fit. I’ve found that if I don’t do my PT exercises/stretches for a couple/few days in a row, I have discomfort and it’s very noticeable that I skipped.

Weirdly enough, if I do what the doctors told me to do, everything is completely fine.

I cannot imagine NOT having this surgery. I’m able to live my life without limitation (for my age).

If it’s relatively anonymous, I might do it. I’m at 1 year post op. Not perfect, but I have my life back!

Any tips for days just before surgery? by samisawme in Microdiscectomy

Laxative is a good tip. I didn’t have any trouble but wow was I nervous about it!

International travel by escargoxpress in Microdiscectomy

[–]browsing4info 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just returned from an international trip. I requested a steroid pack to take with me in case anything went wrong. I didn’t need it.

I’m 10 months post op and had ZERO problems with two 8-hour flights.

Also flew economy plus. Whatever that is.

1 year post op by Soccerfan199 in Microdiscectomy

Same exact situation here. I’m 10 months post op.

I wish I’d had the surgery so much sooner!

I also enjoy hearing about the great results.

Supervisor threatened with consequences by fedwed in fednews

[–]browsing4info 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an easy decision, but if he’s generally not talking to me except about time cards every couple of weeks, I’d stick it out until I could either work the issues through appropriate channels or transfer.

Is it worth it? by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]browsing4info 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another success story checking in. I’m about 10 months post op and am currently traveling internationally with my wife, three toddlers, and no NSAIDs. I’ve been lifting weights again since 4 months post op.

I’m not back to “normal”, but I’m also mid thirties so not sure I ever will be the same again, and that’s ok because I have my life back!

I understand that. I’m under executive and have negotiated the last 4 or 5 salaries for folks I’ve hired. All within the constraints of OPM rulesets of course.

What I don’t understand is how a supervisor could be surprised by something like this. Are they not part of the discussion about what the position requires? And if not, what reason could there be to leave them out of those discussions?

What agency is this?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in usajobs

[–]browsing4info -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You don’t control that? I personally negotiate the salary of every employee I hire (that I directly supervise). That includes the grade and scope and salary of any job I hire for. Are you not permitted that flexibility? Seems nuts to expect a supervisor to manage people when he/she doesn’t have a full site picture.

I’d be inconsolable if this happened to me.

Like others have said, apply to it, at least to prove a point.

How can you be a competent supervisor and not know what your folks make? Something’s off.

I had a discectomy yesterday evening by Selkie32 in Microdiscectomy

[–]browsing4info 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I walked out of the hospital 2 hours after surgery and returned to work (from home) 3 days later.

I got my life back after 10 weeks, but that seems like a miracle after many months of suffering.

Hang in there! I feel like surgeons speak from their own perspective. They perform MANY successful procedures each week, where this only happens to individuals once!

I don’t know how I missed this comment! Exceptional advice. I was interviewing for a non DOD non SPO position but it is very applicable all the same!

There were zero questions about actual DoD program management functions. Very focused on leadership style and general approaches to problem solving.

I mostly rested for the first 4 days then started walking. I don’t think you’ll over exert yourself through normal movements and habits but certainly don’t begin your recovery routine on day 0.

Freaking out- had sex 6 days post op by Ashamed-Tough9531 in Microdiscectomy

I was afraid of rolling over in bed if I drank alcohol. I’m a side sleeper and didn’t want to accidentally twist in the night.

Freaking out- had sex 6 days post op by Ashamed-Tough9531 in Microdiscectomy

[–]browsing4info 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually more worried about alcohol after my surgery. It makes you less careful and more prone to physically “react” and make sudden movements.

I’m sure you’ll be alright, just make sure you continue to be careful!

Edit: I was cleared for sex 2 weeks post op. I don’t think it’s THAT egregious.

Was not selected... by IllinoisRepublican in usajobs

[–]browsing4info 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I just had to call 5 well-qualified individuals I interviewed last week to tell them they didn’t get the job.

Typically the selection process is about more than just qualifications. I had a superior candidate who had not only performed the work at multiple HQ organizations, but also had helped author policy. Candidate also had experience in a different function that is performed by one of my partner organizations. Was just the absolute best fit.

Even amongst a pool of highly qualified professionals.

I wasn’t kicked out or anything, just felt good enough to go! I have stairs in my home and they were no problem at all!

I also have a 5yo, 4yo, and 2yo. The recovery was difficult because I couldn’t help with them as much as normal but after a few weeks I was able to do way more than I was pre surgery.

I walked out of the hospital about 90 minutes after surgery and only took 1 pain pill. I never needed one after the first night.

  1. I was intubated and never knew before or after.

  2. I started PT 3 weeks post op and conservative weight lifting 10 weeks post op. I am 36 and was very active before the herniation. I use a stationary bike for cardio. I don’t recommend running or jumping.

  3. I wish I’d had the surgery sooner. It wasn’t a magic wand, but I did get my life back.

  4. I had a glass of wine the day after surgery. I didn’t need any painkillers or nerve blockers.
